As a 2 month follower, I'm reviewing all the older videos which I have missed over the last couple years. Optimal hand position is vital to efficient playing. I think we get more from watching your demonstrations than the explanatory words and rationales; those are also important. The two go together to make your brief videos complete teaching units. Your manner helps to sell it, your sincerity reads. Most viewers can readily relate to you. Manner and personality are important, perhaps more vital than the teachings. Though a little repetitive, you always stress some perspective on good technique. All these elements bear repeating constantly, until they become so settled in muscle memory they default without thought. In a way, the lazy pianist, like with many other disciplines, is the best pianist. Eliminating inefficiencies is the shortest and quickest path to the desired goals, there is a learning curve. The easiest ways are often the best ways. Undue difficulty is often self imposed. Keep 'em coming when you have time. Thank you, again. Dave M

I would add a fourth element- the “arch” of the hand - as described by John Browning (RIP), in a RU-vid video where he speaks at length of proper hand position……great video by the way!

Absolutely vital from a pianist who helped me a great deal along the way. The great JB. This "arch" could be labeled differently by different folks, but it's essentially the same. One commenter called in a "parachute touch." Craig goes into the "knuckle bridge," an "arch" of the hand, in detail in an earlier video. I imagine it also like holding a tennis ball in the palm without squeezing. If you watch all of Craig's videos he fills in on various aspects of playing. Great comment and yes, another "great video by the way."

@@PIANO_LAB So when the fingers are drawn in they are contracted and when they are extended they are also contracted? Wrong! If they are extended, they are extended, not contracted. And the thumb is not a finger? Since when?

Hi! Thx for the vid! You're saying 1:55 is incorrect, yes? My 8yo student does his left hand like that and says that doing the more open, non contracted left feels very awkard. Edit* rewrote whole thing.

It's important that the hand position is relaxed in the sense that it doesn't take a lot of muscular effort to keep it in that position. Most students will say that playing with good technique feels awkward if they're used to playing in actually awkward ways.

@PIANO LAB thanks for the reply. That is def on me, since he's been with me the whole time. He had lessons bi-weekly for most the time (he's weekly now), and he practices at home on an unweighted keyboard. So i was wondering how much that contributed to his technique struggles. He is keener to learn than my student with the pretty hand technique, but that student has a real piano at home. Anyway, i been pouring through material on hand tech and working on what I'm going to teach tomorrow. Watched this vid again, oc. Wish me luck!

What is the purpose of those pads? Do you need them to adjust height of your bench? I just dont get it.

Hello! Im considering buying a bench for my piano. It is a little expensive and I would like to know the purpose of those pads? Do I really need for some reason or you use them to adjust the height of your bench? Looking forward to your answer, thank you!

@@simplyburak3483 Many more expensive piano seats are height adjustable, if not, then padding must be added for height as needed. Also, they cushion the bum for sitting for hours at a time/day. I recently bot the legacy, round top piano stool, with threaded center, for precise adjustment and a bit of swivel play to help with extreme ranges. $200 but it was a lifetime investment. Very good build and quality, stable and fully adjustable. Where one sits in proximity to the keyboard is a priority consideration.

I am a straight thumb (new learner) player - so glad to learn the angle tip thumb position. Frequently my thumb would get sore from banging down on the key. Everything about this hand position video makes so much sense! Thank you.

I very happy that it was helpful! The flat thumb is common for new piano students but is easy to fix thankfully!

Reviewed again. As I have been incorporating Craig's overall technique over the last 3-4 months, I find that my wrist want to be SLIGHTLY higher than the "level" rule. It gives me more room underneath the hand to maneuver, especially with thumb, but also other fingers which are now always closer to black keys. Someone mentioned a "parachute touch" in a recent video; for me gives maximum control and ease. I can use more arm weight for volume or emphasis. I think Martha Argerich's videos are about as good as it gets; though one doesn't get the explanation. "You should study with as many teachers as you reasonably can." CW MA is a teacher by just watching how she goes about hand position, fingering and everything else. All these elements bear repeating as an ongoing study and discipline.

Practical Piano Technique I just learned playing piano at the beginning of this year. I'm wondering how does the left hand look (the position pof the finger, palm, wrist ect) when we use the fingers to play an octave or more? I have a question: "Does your last two weeks' video has the same answer to my question? Since the explanation you gave here (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MAC9vjZzLd0s.html) is from your right hand. Honestly I am a lil bit hard to find certain answer to my question on the internet. I would like to thank you for your concerns to the specific things in playing piano. Keep inspiring and sharing good things! 🌻
