This project really doesn't cost that much if you think about it on an global scale.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to those who have "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Boyan Slat hasn't done anything in that regard (that I know of). Therefore he isn't nominated for it. What he does instead is doing a lot of good for the environment. I don't know whether there are big prizes for that.

@@JSCHM I would agree with that if Obama didn't receive one for just becoming a US president. Being the first black US president is significant but does not meet said requirements.

@@parkersnowe Still doesn't meet said requirements. Plenty of politicians "strengthen international diplomacy...etc.". It's all fluff as a reason to give the prize to him. It's all political.

There might be a need for a 6th prize, namely Ecology and the innovations that help ensure continuity of existence for the human race. It's not exactly what Albert wanted, but then again back in 1895 we couldn't forsee the impact humanity has on the planet, let alone that it could impact the planet. If the main point of the nobel prizes is to award “those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.” then I guess Boyan should be eligible under a new category once a system is proven and scaled. But the Nobel prizes arent about objectivity, they're about academic prestige and so it will never happen.

If only they could. Most of the world governments are just slaves to the industries that are so powerful and rich that they can literary push any laws they want and when they are caught doing crimes against humanity or nature, they simply pay few millions and everyone forgets. Nothing can change if we don't fundamentally change the monetary system itself. Perhaps it's time to think in terms of resources, knowledge and maximum efficiency towards well being of all instead of profit.

They are recycling what they can and selling Sun glasses etc from the recycled materials that you can buy on the website and fund the next piece of equipment they put out there.

@@I-am-stevo I saw that too, and its pretty cool but most plastic isn't recyclable, by like a huge margin. And even after recycling it what guarantees that it won't just end up on the same river or on the ocean? There has to be a way to either destroy it or turn it into a less durable version of itself. (Regardless what they're doing is much better than nothing and until humanity moves away from plastic of perfects it we will need them for sure)

True. I think they deserve a little marketing like that but it's a valid point. Keep the hope and interest up that it'll make a big difference while admitting it's not enough

Technology isn't destroying the planet, it's the people and their choices. As you said though technology should always be used for the right reasons and Ocean clean up definitely demonstrates that.

Sure there is! Clean your local streams, shorelines etc. We did with Cub Scouts on our local lake. Businesses donated food. We cooked out after. Your local Jaycees or Lion's Club could probably help you get started.

Best way to help is to stop using single use plastics like straws, cups, utensils, etc. Instead try to find more eco friendly substitutes or cut them out altogether.

Some where on their website they have a page about their citizen science app they have. You can collect data on your local rivers/ waterways to help advance their research and data.
