Right now a lot of us are suffering economically, and we need solid advice on money that covers all aspects of personal finance--strategies that go well beyond silly guilt trips about buying lattes. On this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Ramit Sethi, founder of IWillTeachYouToBeRich.com, shares powerful advice on how to make it through the most severe recession in decades. He details a plan of action that will help you nail any job interview, discusses ways to immediately reduce debt or at least postpone payments, and explains how to build up an emergency savings fund so you can weather the coming storm.
SHOW NOTES:
Why you need to accept reality, make a plan, and build up a 1 year emergency fund [1:29]
Ramit explains how to save significant amounts of money right now [4:45]
What to do if picking up the phone scares you [7:27]
How to go on offense when it comes to cost-cutting [10:25]
What government programs are available to people struggling now? [15:26]
Ramit talks about why you should not chase interest rates [18:43]
Ramit explains why you should only invest for the long term [19:45]
Ramit recommends that people not invest until they have a 1 year emergency fund [22:27]
Ramit and Tom discuss making the changes you must make without any shame [24:15]
It doesn’t matter what you look at. It matters what you see. [28:31]
Ramit shares advice on how to get a job if you are unemployed [33:07]
You must take care of yourself and your family first [38:46]
Ramit describes the one change he would recommend people make right now [43:02]
QUOTES:
“Money in your pocket now is worth more than money in your pocket later.” [6:10]
“It’s so rare to hear about someone going on offense with their money. Most often, like 99% of the time, people are playing life on defense, especially with their money.” [12:22]
“Your mind will always play from a position of safety, not excellence.” [32:42]

I’m mostly in cash and waiting for this market to re-level on the reality of our situation. Or are there any ways I can avoid a crunch and maximize my savings of $550k? I know election years are positive for the stock market about 90% of the time.

The issue is most people have the “I want to do it myself mentality” but not equipped for a crash. Ideally, advisors are perfect reps for investing jobs and at first-hand experience, my portfolio has yielded over 300%, summing up nearly $1m, since covid outbreak to date.

Key Points 29:00 Tom says "It doesn't matter what you look at, it matters what you see" Here is a similar one: "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change" 29:48 Ask yourself "What would you love failing at?" "The success is not guaranteed. The struggle is". I really liked it when Tom said this because it reminded me of his course Mindset 101 on Impact Theory University. He said exactly the same thing there 30:20 People are going to win in this time. There will be people who come out of this huge. Example: Zoom 32:45 Brilliant exercise from Ramit: write on one piece of paper all the reasons things will not work. Another piece of paper: write all the reasons it will work. Then you get to choose which paper to read. Tear up the other one. Wow. This was insightful.

Love that this episode brought up the theory of having a pros and cons check list. My husband and I always do this when we are faced with a financial dilemma and need to make decision regarding money. First we discuss it, then we sleep on it, because one might be excited, and the other one not, then we sit down and do a pros and cons list. The answer is NEVER what we thought it would be, and of course it helps if you are both on the same page regarding money, because if you are not, that just makes money management worse!

I’m not a manager nor am I the leader of a large team, but the advice I give to my colleagues who are scared to take opportunities and look for jobs is that it is a MARKETING AND SALES pitch. You already have the skills in the space, show employers how those skills will make them better. And that’s the briefcase scenario.

Our three largest expenses; 1) Our condo mortgage ($105,00 lef6t to pay off) 2) Our organic food (we eat three meals a day cooked at home) 3) Our out-of-pocket medical expenses. We are age 72 and 77, have health issues so we much eat a super healthy organic protocol and we must pay for our medical needs in order to get what we need. We cannot cut those if we want to thrive and or live. We have a strict budget and we do have a plan....we have been working that plan now for the past 27 years.

He's a absolutely correct on preparing a 90 day plan for the role you're interviewing for. At the very least a great idea is to have a resume addendum. This is basically details on your past accomplishments that you bring to the interview to refer to. The interviewer will ask for a copy when they see it. Take notes and ask intelligent questions.

WTF. As a landlord that's the worse advice ever. Not every landlord is a multi millionaire. It's pretty messed up that the government is giving tenants a pass on not paying their rent without giving the landlords any financial compensation for the loss of rent. I'm blessed that my tenants are still paying me, but I know landlords who are losing their properties because of this unfair law. That's like you going to work and because the company you're working for tells you we're having financial problems so we're not going to pay you for the next six months but we still expect you to come to work every day until we get our money issues under control and the government tells you by law you have to do it with no regards to how you're going to FEED YOU'RE FAMILY!

Really compressed audio for some reason Tom. I miss your real voice. Thanks for continuing to give us value and what you do. Please encourage your crew to experiment with different audio/streaming solutions. Know Rich Roll did a show with Zach Bush and mentioned he apologized for not having a real time interaction because of the delay as Zach was in Austria. It still sounded like a high quality production and hardly noticed a delay being it was webcasted. Made me think about a software like Vizzywig that does support a portal connect and quality may be compromised during the live stream. But when you play it back it’s like there is no compromise in quality including the video stream. Be like a two camera shoot in the studio. Don’t quote me on this software but seem to remember it offering these impressive features. Good news on Diamond Comics as they going to kick back up on May 20th. Look forward to getting your next comic. Lost my job as a event production technician(run camera, audio, set up lights and sort in a corporate environment)and been shifting gears like crazy as know it’s a fragile and a lot of things have to be healthy so I can actually work. I didn’t want the government payout even though was more than minimum wage. Regardless felt the right thing to do to keep going at it. Working at Amazon and been selling items on the side as that was my side hustle before this happened but it’s been going decently. I often see your Quest Cookies, Bars while working at Amazon. My creative gears been turning like crazy. Putting ideas and reading books how to start my own food item to offer to the market. I have this great idea as listen to so many podcasts like yours that the ideas of health keep coming back up over and over. Want to take them all and incorporate them into the foods I make. Have some crazy combinations in offers and the holes in the market as what is not offered especially in the ingredients department. Similar to say the guy who made Primal Foods brand. He started much later in his life. Inspired by him and your own brand. Hope all is well with you and Lisa. Be fucking legendary Tom.

One thought on unemployment: this is your own money, which has been withheld from paychecks for all the years prior to this event. There is no shame in using your own savings, in the form of government set aside from the money you earned previously
@yaritzal6360
@yaritzal6360 4 года назад
I agree with you in people setting their pride aside and not feeling shame in claiming unemployment. At the least, we're experiencing temporarily what other people experience on a more regular basis. This situation is trying to teach us to be compassionate and understanding of others' situation. That said, I just want to make a correction on your statement. Employees don't pay towards unemployment insurance (UI), companies do. It's an "insurance" fund, funded by employers. The % they pay is based on their payroll $. Companies who have the highest layoffs (i.e. not-so-good companies who treat their employees as dispensable) are "punished" with a higher UI % rate. They have a higher chance of having unemployment claims filed by their laid-off employees, so the reason for the raise in % they pay. Employees pay zero towards UI. Employers pay it all.

My husband and I got married at the very end of January (we were initially going to wait until May. So happy we didn't!) We simply took our immediate family down to the courthouse. We got catering from our favorite restaurant down the street. We had the reception at our house, which I decorated with tons and tons of flowers I purchased at Produce Junction. All in all, the total of the wedding including the cost of my dress (which was elegant enough to wear then, but can be worn again when the world gets back to some semblance of normalcy) was approx. $600. Remember, the wedding is about YOU, your SPOUSE, and your LOVE. It is not about impressing other people. The average American wedding is something like $30,000.

I already feel so much less stressed calculating how much I need for my emergency fund, knowing it's a certain (and attainable) figure rather than an unknown one.

I love love love your show. I have one suggestion ~ upgrade your microphone Tom. Just $100 can get you a really great quality mic to plug into your laptop. Poor sound from host is distracting. Just a loving suggestion 😉

When your bank charges you an overdraft fee of tell them to return your money. The money you spend is the energy you applied out of your life to make it; those hours out your life that took you to make that money, nobody is giving it back to you. So don’t let banks rob your money, you have to take charge. They will refund your money special that the media is available to the general public, so they don’t want bad publicity.

So what I hear is 1. save money by delaying payments and worry about investing later 2. make more money by starting a business 3. Control your mindset 4. Job market is not in a employee's favor

I disagree with the $3 coffee. If you get one every day that you work which isnt uncommon for people. Take that from say the day your 20 to 65 when you retire at $3 a day with 9% interest a year that adds up to over 400k almost half a mill just by getting coffee every work day for 45 years Not to mention caffine isnt good for you
