He fell in love with it on The Grand Tour so much that he bought one, and now James May has a bit of a public service announcement about just what the Alpine A110 is all about. Watch the behind the scenes: • Filming James May's Al...
I love the aesthetic of that car. And the fact that it's a small, lightweight supercar-ish French contrarian car makes it quite likely James's perfect vehicle.
This one, Drivetribe. This one nails the review format exactly without pandering to nostalgia or overly-scripted scenes. And that NATO watch strap, oh my gosh. Looks fantastic!
Yeh, I feel the same. I mean I get what James is saying, but to me looks great XD. Ok, maybe they could have done a bit more for rear visibility, but I like the slight drop and mold to that smug rear boot line :D
I've seen quite a few of these on the roads here in Belgium and I think they look fantastic from most angles. They're unfussy and not too brash, which is rare for this class of car these days.
I dont think you can have fun on your road. It is a car made for small and turn road. On straigh line like you have in the US must be borring. You would probably be disapointed
Tell that to American car manufactures that have decided that crossovers, SUV's and trucks is all we are getting on this side of the pond.. oh and the Mustang.
@@mattmattmatt131313 If you talk about environmentalist, their ultimate goal is to save you and the others, even if it mean to leave your car behind. Nowadays, scientific projection clearly shows that we can't expect to live like before (nevertheless, not necessarily at a very rich lvl). Owning a reasonably equipped house, with 2 children in it and a reasonably sized car is already to much. I love the alpine, but unfortunately, she and the others (even electrics), has to disappear. Humans need to decrease to survive
The 'S' does 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and 161mph coupled with 40mpg (even when driving 'enthusiastically'). The double clutch gearbox is excellent (jumped from a 718 Cayman PDK into the A110 and never questioned the gearbox). After extensive research, number crunching and soul searching I just ordered the A110s. I looked at the market. Took everything for extended test drives (days not minutes). The Alpine makes too much sense to ignore; performance that leaves you grinning from ear to ear and an everyday practicality that allows it to be used as a daily drive. Is it a 718 Cayman basher? Only the Porsche GTS4 and the GT4 would be 'better' but then you are in a different ball park. Go and try one. Get your head round the fact that you don't have to play 'German badge wars' any more and enjoy arguably the best sports car around. For anyone interested the film was shot Near Compton Abbas airfield, just south of Shaftsbury, Dorset. My local area and roads I drive often.
Bro, preaching to the choir, I sold my s2 Lotus not to long ago so don't try to lecture me, the cayman is hardly a heavyweight and beats the Alpine or should I say Renault in terms of power and pretty sure it goes faster round a track also.
@@swansmeister I disagree and it very rarely loses a head to head against the 718 in YT reviews - both in terms of track time and pleasure. Tuck your prejudices aside and test drive it, it is a wonderful drivers' car. (Elise S2 owner)
@@hyweltthomas I seen the reviews of Steve Sutcliffe, he did a comparisson vid witht the two I believe and he said the same. Second I would refuse to buy a what, 80k pound car thats just shares parts with a clio, it's an overpriced gimmick and the looks are also questionable but thats more opinion ofc so don't realy matter. An s2 exige for example looks way better and the s3 also still looks better imo.
I have owned some recent and modern supercars, and now I have an Alpine, and it’s objectively better in most ways for 1/5th what I’ve paid previously. I absolutely love it
100%. As well as a lot more smiles per gallon it is also usable 365 days a year. You don't have to fear speed bumps, rain, long motorway miles and an enjoyable car you can use often is >> a spectacular car you use very rarely.
@@RichardEnglander Honestly no, it's so nimble it keeps you very busy, I don't think anybody but people with bags of talent would have time. I'm with you that it can be a real bonus to a car (GR Yaris for example) - but in this case I wouldn't want it
I'm so happy that it's May of the trio who seems to have fully embraced the Tribe Stuff - I genuinely don't think there could ever be enough content with him, and every video is so engrossing, especially with a talented production crew behind him that he's happy to turn the spotlight on. Just need a proper James May Podcast imo, about things he finds interesting or something like that
Had one when it came out 3 years back, pre-ordered but sold as I wasn't using much due to small kids, still regret it to this day and I'm thinking of buying another, so much fun to drive
On the note of making vehicles smaller and more lightweight, I really wish the market in North America would steer towards hatchbacks and wagons instead of crossovers and SUVs. The leading example I use is a 2020 Civic hatchback has the same cargo space as many small crossovers and SUVs !!
Probably one of the best Drivetribe videos yet; everything just felt spot on. Audio, cinematic style, pacing, script, James, comedy, subject. For what is a relatively simple video, it's certainly one to be proud of.
@@stephanvelines7006 He said "Roman Catholic" not "Christian Catholic". Changing the wording changes the intent. Not to mention that the Anglican Church already calls itself "Protestant Yet Catholic" by its motto.
I have to say, I think the modern A110 is one of the few cars that really pulls off the retro design look. I think its absolutely gorgeous from every angle. I think this is largely due to it still being quite small. Other cars (500 and Mustang) have grown in size exponentially, therefore the design language doesn't look right.
@Sean Haley Yea your right. While I DO like the Mustang, the longer disproportionate nose reminds me more of the 71 Mach 1 in Stephen Seagal's movie ' Marked For Death '.
Fun fact: Masahiro Sakurai (the director of the Super Smash Bros. series from Nintendo) said he had 2 cars. A Mercedes S Class (which Harada from Tekken said he also had) and this specific car.
I actually think it’s a very pretty car. The back end especially is beautiful. If I’m unsure about anything it’s the quad headlights, but overall I think it looks great
I think it looks great! In the first 10 seconds of the video, I knew that it was the modern version of the old Alpine. The original car won A LOT of races and awards.
I really can't imagine what my life would have looked like without James, Richard and Jeremy. This phenomenal trio has always made me smile even in hard times and I will always be thankful to them. I hope that the next generations will get the same experience as me watching their series despite the growing influence of EVs and the end of the ICE era. I don't think that anyone will be able to produce a show better than theirs, because what these gentlemen are doing is writing history.
@@FunkyBuddha81 needless to say, the twin headlamps were always THE central design feature of the alpine: a relaunch of the alpine without them would have been pretty much pointless.
It’s true, the TT‘s Design has become rather aggressive with the 3rd generation. I still admire the pure and neutral design of the 1st 😗👌🏼 As to the Alpine: great looking car, but I honestly don’t understand the price policy
@@andreidanielpetre is it actually? I don’t know the figures, but cannot imagine the alpine branch is a highly profitable company. I guess it’s mostly an image support for Renault. Fact is: equipped as it is at its price, it remains uninteresting for the majority of car-enthusiasts. And again: I truly like its design
I want to echo what some of the other folks here are saying. This is absolutely 10/10. I know May and Co. don't want to do this sort of thing a lot anymore, but they are the pinnacle of car reviewers. Us TG/TGT fans are loving every second of this, and I would dearly hope they consider doing more reviews for Drivetribe. Mr. James May, thank you so very much for this, and I hope you will do more!
Very impressed and so excited by this Video! This has such a highly professional production feeling that i feel weird watching it on RU-vid to be honest. Please, more of this, i would gladly throw money at you to watch it.
returning back to this vid after like a year, one of my faves, James May made me love the A110, its now one of my fave cars out there, Gordon Murray likes it too!
The quality of these videos is uncanny! It can rival grand tour or topgear reviews. Even though it is made by smaller team with smaller budget, I’m assuming. Great job!!
I would love to see James go through how easy or difficult cars are to repair. After all, bieng eco friendly also means fixing what we have rather than replacing it.
Loved everything about this video, it's like 3atching a bit of top gear or grand tour. Super editing. And James hit the nail on the head about the problems with retro design meeting modern standards.
It is interesting that there is also a Bulgarian trace in the creation of the revived Alpine A110 model. It is about the designer who made the first exterior sketches of the concept. He is Bulgarian, and his name is Deyan Denkov. It is he who outlines the vision of the new Alpine
