This is the new BMW M5 and everything you want to know about it! From a full in-depth walkaround to hot laps at Estoril and driving on the countryside roads. With the 6th generation F90 M5 now featuring BMW M xDrive all-wheel-drive, it offers a combination of driving modes in harmony with 600 horsepower from the biturbo V8. Let's find out what it's all about!
Hi Tim. I live 30min away from Estoril racetrack. I didn't know BMW was testing there, I prefer the M5 for sure, but i'm sad to see that the looks are still too "normal". Just looks like a normal 5 series with a sport pack :( Next time you come to Portugal, just say something. You got some fans over here too :)
Shmee! Thank you for not pushing merch and bullshit down our throats. You're for sure the "dad" of RU-vid car reviews but you're consistent and I'm always throwing thumbs up your way. Cheers.
Hi Tim, must say, your on track commentary really stood out.Enjoyed it a lot, seems much more enthusiastic and spontaneous than other reviews I've seen you do.
Who cares about the value in 10 years? Do you really think anyone buys this to own more than 2-3 years until time for a new toy?? Sounds like a poor person thinking. Its a M5 man!
ferrari458speciale fan I’m gonna have to agree even though i’ve grown into an AMG fan. The new E63 looks like shit compared to the previous generation E63 facelift. Very, very sad.
the legend benzes front, interior, and sound are way better (you could argue the interior and sound alone wins the competition). Benz always sucked at comming up with decent rear lights tho, I give you that one :p
The Truth don’t know what you’re talking about... everyone is saying the M5 is the more refined car. They both do different things. The AMG is loud and extravagant. For people who need attention from others to feel good. It’s mostly good in a straight line. Where the M5 is for people who appreciate cars. Who don’t mind a Lehman looking at them mistaking it for a regular 5 series. It’s the real driver focussed car with emphasis on the driving experience which consists of more than just a 400m straight
This car is very nice. I've been a BMW enthusiast since age 10, specifically an M fan! My first love was the E36 M3, then the E46... eventually, I did start to appreciate the E30, too late to acquire one before the value shot up, but I do have a special place in my heart for the E30 M3. Thanks for doing this video, your videos are great. I'm pretty sure it was you that did a vid with the audi rs4 avant mounted with paintball guns... that was great too! I think that's the first time I found u on RU-vid. Great job, objective review. When I'm 50, I'll probably buy an M5. Currently I have an E90 M3. I'm considering the new M3 CS and waiting on info on the M2 CSL. I would give my left kidney for an M3 wagon one day. Thanks again, Happy New Year!
EXCELENTE VIDEO MAITE! This is one of the best videos on BMW M5 on RU-vid! Fun but precise on facts.. I subscribed to your channel because of this video... Keep up the good work!
Ben Mack it looks like the same key which has been available with 7 series since 2016 and even 5 series this year so probably nothing new to the reviewer. It is cool but I guess a hassle to charge everyday.

Sat in both the M5 and E63S at the LA auto show the other day and have to say the Merc has the win as far as the interior goes. These cars are so close in performance that its really just a preference in esthetics.
Everyone has a different choice, and every company has its speciality boththe e63 and the m5 are great cars. If you want comfort and speed the e63 is great and if you want a track toy,you should get an m5. My choice is an m5. Cuz I am an enthusiast and I don't want comfort. I want a track beast. Both the companies work hard to make cars and we should respect their work
Vagatavg Vainglory all reviews I've read have stated the M5 is more refined and comfortable and the E63 is louder and better for hooning. Either way the difference is negligible and both cars are very comfortable. If you want a track toy neither of these cars are for you... go with a 911 or something similar.
Great video Shmee! Didnt realise (and probably should being an M-Car owner) that this new M5 isn't using the DCT system. Really cant wait to see one of the new M5's in person!
Having driven this model I think one of the best things about this car is how big it is and spacious it is but at the same time so agile. The 600bhp is plentiful and you need a lot of money to run this car, especially where on the autobahn it can easily drink up to 18L/100 and you are not putting any standard 95 fuel in there anymore. The amount of technology makes this car even more expensive for repairs.
Great intro to the new M5 Tim, a fun day for sure. The F10 is a great generation of the M5, obviously the F90 has moved on though, most notably the addition of M xDrive. Question; is it worth/sensible/or not so much, to upgrade to the new M5 from an F10 or to just stick with the F10 for longer? I'm really not sure, can't figure that one out. Cheers!
pick up definitely sounds more responsive and a throatier v8 which puts you on the edge of german performance. can't wait to see it in person. Tim does BMW plan to do a Frozen edition series down the line seeing that the previous gen was featured in that spec?
So you can’t utilize the RWD and AWD modes independent of the stability control or traction control. There’s no RWD “Sport Mode” that allows some slip but retains some support - RWD is only for ESC/TSC full off. That’s too bad. Some people like to drive RWD and throw the tail out just a little bit with the security of ESC on.
Petko Krushev Agreed. People thought it was ugly when it was released, much like the rest if Bangles designs, but it has aged so well. It could be released today.
This new m5 will hopefully bring back bmw to their roots with a focus on excitement and driver enjoyment. A lot of these cars have become generic and dull, but this new generation f90 seems like it’s a leap in the right direction.
Very informative video. Sad thing is that even though I like almost everything about the new M5, I don't like the new front. Previous gen looked better, just my opinion.
I love how different and similare are the 3 Big german super sedans. The rs6, e63s and m5 have nearly the same power, the same engine type, the same transmission, the same size etc. But from a driving point of view they're really different. The rs6 is all about control, the e63s is all about brutal power, and the m5 is all about driving pleasure.
3:05 the car can actually go faster but it is limited to 155 because of the law, the reason why he said the m drivers package it goes 190 is they let you drive it on a track so they set the limiter for a different limit for speed
Very nice review of a wonderful car which is near perfection, but I would always go for the M550i instead as I deem it a little more handsome and decent. The M5 is more like a hooligan. BTW, are you British or American? I really like your elaborated English.
BaGGuiToruL Thanks, mate! And I can confirm that Shmee’s a Brit, I just went to his HP and all of the cars carry a British number plate. Lucky him... he owns so many cool cars.
Right now I have a 2015 428i xDrive Gran Coupe. My goal is to purchase the BMW M4 by the time I need a new car (about 3 years from now). But damn, I really want this M5. It’s $20k more, so I’m hoping I can afford it lol. Still love the M4 though, and realistically that may be a better fit for me because I absolutely love my 4 series now and how well it handles. It’s definitely smaller and lighter than the 5 series.
I think it’d be interesting to see an M5 in your garage. Other than SOL’s M3 we don’t see many ownerships of BMW M cars. It’d be nice to see a delivery video from BMW Welt as well.
e63 might be a monster but this new m5 is the more livable car..it has the performance and also comfort to be used as an everyday car whereas the e63s ride is very harsh for everyday use.
Its more like a gurney flap or wickerbill. Instead of a spoiler in back. Maybe they give more than one size wickbill.. That would interesting more or less rear downforce. Depending on what you feel is best.
Schmee150 Why do you feel BMW stopped doing a Touring model of the M5? clearly there is a market with Mercedes and Audi both having high performance estates.
I never get tired of watching your channel. However I am jealous of all the cars you get to drive. Lol. #earlyviewcrew #earlysquad #shmeeteam #shmeegulls
I'd buy the Alpina B5 Biturbo Touring instead. It'll almost certainly be better for everyday use. The M5 will monster it round a track, but most performance saloon owners never take their car to the track... Also despite its comfort oriented setup, the B5 will crack 200.
I'm amazed you weren't sick to your stomach after sitting in the back while the car was drifting. I was at the M Performance school and doing that ruined me.
Hey Tim. Great content as always. Just a thought of the top of my head. Since you get access to the latest and greatest, why not begin to compare cars within their own category? I mean, this new F90 M5 has as its direct competitor the Mercedes AMG E63S 4Matic+. Maybe a back to back comparison (maybe with a drag race o something of that sort) video would be awesome. Consider it? Cheers!
