(edit) I had an issue where I couldn't see anything on the cards. IT'S BECAUSE OF DARK THEME. The Dark theme changes some of the display colors, and for me this translated into very clear text on very clear flashcards. Turned it back to Light theme, and now I can use the deck no issue. It had my head scratching for a while. Bianca please feel free to pin this for reference! And thank you for the fantastic deck!!
Can do!!! There are tons of tutorials already so I can direct you to one of those! If they’re still confusing I can make one targeted to your specific questions! Also, thank you so much for the lovely comment about the video and website! I spent a ton of time trying to make it was informative and useful as possible (while still fun heh). I’ll be posting more resources or thoughts on there fairly regularly, so check back whenever you want!
i'm SO SORRY I accidentally deleted your followup comment!! I read through it though :) i'm glad you were able to find the answer to your anki questions!!! I also hope that your chinese journey is great :) it's gonna be a long road ahead, but it's so rewarding!! i'm almost a year out and it's so cool being able to be somewhat functional in the language HAHA I still have a long way to go, but it keeps getting more enjoyable the better I get! ~
Thank you sincerely, Bianca. I'm not sure you understand how much we appreciate your sharing this anki deck that you painstakingly disassembled/reassembled/compiled/consolidated... for free. Thank you for the 3 礼物 lĭwù!
I’m so glad that it’s helpful!! More than happy to help out others based on my own experiences, especially for things I wished that I had when I first started out! I’ll be releasing an HSK5 deck once I finish that book too!
SORRY?? UHM? YOU DROPPED THIS: 👑 It’s my first time on your channel but girl, I was about to cry when I saw all the stuff you created and made it available for everyone for free??? Like- You need a gold statue girl 😭❤️ I have no clue how to thank you enough… this video was amazing and helped so much, I can’t wait to start studying with your deck, it’s incredible Thank you for everything, really… it’s wow… thank you 😭😭😭✨
I don't know how to explain my feeling. I really appreciate your deck and thank you so much for the video. This is a lot of work. I have created anki deck before but it was only the flash card with picture. Your flashcard deck is much more work and time consuming. Thank you so much!!😍
You're absolutely amazing! Im going to start my mandarin journey now in 2022 and this will for sure help me a lot. Thank you so much for the hard work you've put into it, it's outstanding!
Es alentador ver personas como tu, haciendo un gran trabajo compartiendo estos recursos para que personas como yo podamos aprender desde cualquier parte del mundo y tan solo con una computadora e internet :) thank you from Mexico
@@bianca.phdinprogress Hey since I made that comment I actually already started preparing for HSK5 and this deck helped me a lot getting acquainted with the HSK4 vocab, so thank you again!
This deck is a gold mine! Thank you for the botttom of my heart for going trhough all the trouble to make it perfect and sharing it with us! Do you have any plans to release decks for the following levels? Once again, thank you so much for this!
I stopped using HSK so I won't be making decks for the higher levels, but hopefully by that point your level will be high enough to make decks of your own from content you love!
If y’all give me the textbooks to replicate, I could theoretically do it! Just need someone else to QC cuz I kno nothing about Japanese besides recognizing kanji that I’ve learned in Chinese HAHAH.
@@bianca.phdinprogress No need to. ^^ If one wants to find good Japanese Anki decks, one just has to look for them. My recommendation are the Tango decks, starting with the "JLPT Tango N5 MIA Omega Deck". There are more good decks out there but since I'm focusing on Chinese I don't know too many of them. Great video again btw! :D
Thanks for the comment!! I’m sure it’ll help out our Japanese learning friends :) are those decks also structured as sentence cards? I noticed that most of the decks I found for chinese (especially if following a textbook) mostly had vocab cards, not sentence cards. If the card just has a word and definition on it, it’s not the most helpful for long term retention!
I’m sooo glad it was helpful!! HSK5 will probs be released mid to end next year! Got a little excited to start sentence mining but I’ll get back into my HSK5 studying in the new year :)
Thanks a lot for the deck! Its a game changer for me. It was a struggle for me to add cards and create a deck myself step by step. Really appreciate your help bianca!
Thanks a lot for sharing, just moved back to Beijing after 4 years and aiming at HSK4 as I did HSK3 like 7 years ago. Definitely gonna try Anki! Great inspiration 🌏😊 Hope it will enable me to travel more too!
Hi Bianca, New sub here. Thank you so much for sharing this deck with us. I appreciate you so much. Making Anki decks can be very hard, time consuming and can be so frustrating and to imagine that out of the goodness of your heart you shared it to us for free. This is just amazing. Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you! You are the best! xoxo
Thanks a lot bianca! just started over a a month ago with clases that go through the HSK books serie, and i was manually adding tags along the way on a huge HSK anki set in combination with the hanping dictionary. guess you have done the work already! :)
Wow, that's pretty incredible. Well done. I just started learning chinese for work and my first week has been a rollercoaster of emotions. Your videos are great.
Bianca I just stumbled onto your channel and just wanted to share enormous gratitude for your effort in creating this deck, and your willingness to share it to the language learning public. I can only imagine the months of time, effort and energy you have taken to create this comprehensive deck, we all owe you much gratitude, and best continued luck in your language learning journey!
Saw a couple of your tips in the comments for adding audio, and I've used your template to create my own anki vocab cards and I'm super happy with how you showed we could customise things. So helpful!
I am in awe! what a great job, i cant even imagine the time you put into it! And thank you so much for making it available, this is extremely generous of you.
This is GOLD!! Thanks a million for building this deck and making it available to everyone for free 〒▽〒 I'm sure it took you so so much effort, energy, and time :') Really appreciate it.
Hi Bianca, thank you so much for you magnanimous endeavours. You mention a link to a pdf version of the HSK textbooks which will be really useful but I could not spot it.
Thank you for this deck! I have a little issue though, the default setting is that it adds cards in the order of when they were added so now I only get all the „listening“ cards and not the others…
Thank you so much. However I experienced the audio was cut short at the beginning. They are always missing the first 1-2 words of the sentence. Any suggestion to fix this issue?
thank you so much!!! There's an amazing Anki add-on called AwesomeTTS. It'll add audio to whatever Chinese you have (or other languages) and you can select what voice you want! If you pay for a small subscription they have higher quality audio, but you can also just use the free version!
I stumbled onto your youtube video and was so happy that I did. I love your deck. If possible, can you do tutorial on how to create a flashcard for mandarin (include pinyin and pronunciation). I'm also interested in making flashcard for cantonese (include yale phonetic and pronunciation). Thank you.
This is amazing, thank you so much. I just have a question, would you recommend starting with reading and then listening? Im starting at HSK 1 and want to know if thats an ok order. Additionally is it good to immerse yourself in chinese shows if youre still beginner
I would say, do whatever keeps you learning. if you want to immerse and watch tv shows as a beginner, then go for it! but I would definitely recommend reading and listening at the same time. listening will be one of the harder skills to pick up, so the earlier you familiarize yourself with the tones, the easier it'll be to get better at it!
This is honestly incredibly helpful ! Thank you so much for helping out !! I might make a video review of your Anki deck someday after using it for a while ! It's been super helpful ! :D
omg I would love that!!! I would love to get feedback on what is useful and what could be improved upon for future decks!! I’m making HSK5 right now too!
Thanks, but the stroke order is not working on ankidroid. Ans, why are listening reading and writing cards not in the separate sub decks? That would make it easy to control what type of cards you wat to study/review...
Hi Bianca, Thank you very much for creating and sharing this amazing deck! I would like to learn how you created it. This must be quite a process. Can you please share your card creation in Anki process in next videos? Thank you!
Thanks for the comment! I’m not sure if that would be an interesting video since I literally just typed down all of the sentences in the textbooks into an excel document, batch imported the pinyin, classified the chapter and card type as a tag, and uploaded them into anki as a CSV file. Then I went in an added all of the audio using the AwesomeTTS add on to every single card. While adding the character and sentence audio, I also double checked that all the imported fields of the card was correct. After all the content of the cards was done, I made the card layout and formatting depending on their focus type! Overall it was a really tedious and repetitive process HAHHA. I would not recommend making so many cards in as quick of a time as I did across 4 textbooks XD
Dear Bianca, your created deck is awesome. Thank you for sharing it with us. Although I'm too confused with putting in the stroke order and Chinese audio! Can you please explain how to create a card that has both stroke order and audio?
Hello Bianca! Thank you so much :) This surely the best HSK deck in the internet! Just a quick question though: did you first work through the chapters (say, HSK 1 chapter 1) and then do the flashcards? Or did you learn directly with the deck? If anyone else is reading this and has tried it, what would you recommend?
From her explanations, she first goes through the chapter in the textbook, then enables the relevant cards for review (she explains how to do it in this clip). She doesn't think Anki is a good tool for learning, only for reviewing learned content.
@MyOrangeString is correct! I would recommend working through the chapter first and maybe even going through it a few times until you feel fairly comfortable with the characters. Then you can add them to your Anki deck by unsuspending that chapter. If you do it this way, it removes a huge burden off the Anki system where you don't need to learn the words out of context, and can actually recall the word/sentence from the dialogue for easier retention!
I’ll be doing book reviews in a few videos (got a few others in the pipeline first). But I did review all of the available books on my website! Currently it’s a review of book series, but I’ll be doing an in-depth HSK1 review in a week on there! biancalearns.wordpress.com/
Thanx again for all your efforts helping us newbies get good systems for starting out. My biggest problem has been to know where to start and what books/apps to use on a daily basis. Your videos are u s e f u l and v a l u a b l e for this purpose. Go!
thank you!!!! I’ll be doing book and app reviews in the future, but it’ll definitely take time to review each available book and app (also don’t want my channel to just be a review channel). I would recommend checking my website for all the resources that I found when I started out up until now with reviews and other explanations!! It’s meant to be a one stop shop for anything “how to learn a language” (especially Chinese because that’s what I’m learning right now!). I’ll be updating with new posts regularly! Got app, textbook, graded reader, podcasts, and website reviews for Chinese! And some posts about how to go about learning any language, and one specifically for Chinese! biancalearns.wordpress.com/
So yes you spoke about this in the video. The fact we only get a translation for the vocab and not the full sentence. I’m just having a hard time knowing if I’m right or wrong. Because In the context of the specific words I think it’s saying something but then google/dict says something completely different. So I just wish there was a cheat sheet just to know If I’m right or wrong.
So that’s why studying where the sentences from an anki deck come from is super important. A sentence is great, but sometimes, you need the context of the paragraph or the story it was in to help fill in those gaps. For example, if you saw this sentence in an anki deck, it may be a bit confusing: “And then I hopped on a train and passed out”. You can look up every work and get the gist of what’s happening, but it would be easier to understand it in context of a larger story. “I got off work late today and couldn’t wait to go home. I was just so tired! So I walked towards the train station. And then I hopped on a train and passed out. Luckily, I woke up right before my stop!” So if you can, learn sentences in context of larger stories. If you do that, when you see that sentence in anki, oftentimes you’ll remember what story it came from and can use those clues to fill in the gaps!!! :)
Thank you so much, Bianca; your deck is amazing. I have one question... In your deck, in the first three chapters, you added the word "book" and "this." Why did you add these ones if they weren't mentioned in the dialogues?
Your decks are very impressive :'), thank you so much for sharing🥰. Could you spend a littile more time to show everyone how to put in the stroke order and the chinese audio. This would mean the world to me because I'm struggling with that :((. Thank you for reading. Sorry if I make any mistakes, I'm bad at English :((
@@bianca.phdinprogress After watching carefully videos and download your amazing decks, I now can create a card that has both audio and stroke order. Thanks a million, you have saved me this semester ❤️
Hi Bianca, could you recall how many words you compiled in the decks? I notice many duplicates. For example, tag reading, writing, and listening all have 度. Or maybe I need to divide the total cards by 3?
the deck is made up of 3 card types that emphasize a particular language skillset. Each card type has the exact same words and sentences, just the orientation on front and back and hints are adjusted. So for an accurate total card number, just divide by 3!
what type of deck would you like to see me make? creating a deck is actually really simple with Anki. You just add content to the front of a card and the back of the card. it get's more complicated when you're looking to add personalized features. I would recommend to look at other decks that are available and see what they put into each card so you can decide for yourself what is the best information to put into your own deck!
@@bianca.phdinprogress I just like create my own Chinese deck for communication at work. But I don't know how to add instructions on how to write kanji, add pronunciation for vocabulary and example sentences in each card like you
Hey Bianca, I think you attended a language program I worked at as a bilingual assistant. Glad to see you are continuing your language journies. I was wondering if you could give further direction on where to find the correct code to add the hanzi animation on Anki. I went to the site and tried one of the codes, but I think it needs to be adjusted. I see they have a quiz code that lets you draw the character with your finger without an outline. Your help will be greatly appreciated! On a side note, I am currently studying at a Chinese school in China. It has been quite a struggle to keep up with the course but also take the time needed to test out and create effective study habits. My program kind of just totally skipped Hanzi so the Western folks have been on their own. :/ I am trying to switch things up now to catch up. Also ....redoing all of your cards :O I am sure it has helped a lot of people.
Hi robert!!! I got my specific code from the hanzi writer website and didn't do any adjustments to it (just copy pasted into anki). the specific code I used can be found in the cards all the way at the end so you can cross-reference there! if you're trying to use the code that gives you a written quiz, that would be something you should ask the developers of the original code about! what I did for my cards was basically just plug and chug various chunks of code until I got the result I wanted. there may need to be a bit of finagling to get the quiz you want, but all of the code components should be available on the developer's website listed below! here's their website explaining the usage of different parts of the code: hanziwriter.org/docs.html the code for integrating the quizzes is copy pasted below (formatting may be an issue but its also in the link I shared earlier): var writer = HanziWriter.create('character-target-div', '码', { width: 150, height: 150, showCharacter: false, padding: 5 }); writer.quiz({ onMistake: function(strokeData) { console.log('Oh no! you made a mistake on stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum); console.log("You've made " + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + " mistakes on this stroke so far"); console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + " total mistakes on this quiz"); console.log("There are " + strokeData.strokesRemaining + " strokes remaining in this character"); }, onCorrectStroke: function(strokeData) { console.log('Yes!!! You got stroke ' + strokeData.strokeNum + ' correct!'); console.log('You made ' + strokeData.mistakesOnStroke + ' mistakes on this stroke'); console.log("You've made " + strokeData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz'); console.log('There are ' + strokeData.strokesRemaining + ' strokes remaining in this character'); }, onComplete: function(summaryData) { console.log('You did it! You finished drawing ' + summaryData.character); console.log('You made ' + summaryData.totalMistakes + ' total mistakes on this quiz'); } });
Hello, Briana! I noticed an, albeit, small, error. For your card 电影, you write the translation as “film, move” and the move should be "movie.” Thanks! Keep on keeping on.
Hey Bianca, do you mix all note types within your deck when you review? I am considering separating into 3 separate decks for Reading, Listening, and Writing. Just curious if you just mix all and review all at once yourself.
I mixed all at once but I selected different numbers of new cards for each. writing takes a long time to do, so I add less new cards to that desk than reading and listening. I don't want to be doing Anki for 5 hours a day .-.
What is the publisher of this HSK textbook? There are lots of HSK books from many publishers, so it would be helpful to know WHICH book/series the cards are for.
ahh great point! these are the ones from blcup (which is the official HSK 2.0 books). Here's the amazon link to the one I used but you can find them on the blcup website as well! www.amazon.com/HSK-Standard-Course-Chinese-English/dp/7561937091/ref=asc_df_7561937091/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312114711115&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14886323689694796531&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9073479&hvtargid=pla-455432167878&psc=1
it could be! but it would be a bit more challenging to learn without reading. pinyin is available, which is the english romanization (aka chīfàn), so you could just get rid of the chinese characters and focus on just the pinyin and the character/sentence audio! the cards go from easier to harder, so as long as you start in the beginning, you'll be able to get really far even with just the audio and the pinyin!!!
Hi Bianca! first of, THANKS A MILLION ! How to add pls“type in answer “ field on the whole cards of the deck at once without impacting the note type, because I tried to change the note type through “ change the note type “ to basic type in answer/writing. But I find it changes completely the deck and some fields were deleted Ps: is that possible? without changing it on every each card Thanks in advance!
I just figured it out, and it's sooo SIMPLE. for those who want to practice TYPING in chinese with pinyin: 1 change your keybord language to simplified chinese 2 click "Browse" on Anki 3 look for HSK 1-4 deck then choose randomly a card that has "Writing note tag" 4 click on "Cards..." situated in the middle of "Fields..." and "Preview" 5 on the front template of the card copy/paste {{type:Sentence}} below {{hint:English Definition}} when you click on Save, the 'type in answer' will be automatically done on all the cards with " writing tags" only TADAA
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the pdf, but look up HSK pdf online and there will be a few websites where you can download them if they haven't been taken off the internet yet!
@@bianca.phdinprogress I just ordered the book, I’ve actually been getting pretty good.(even though I started 2 and a half months after I wrote this comment. Thanks though ✌️.
The card color change is individual though, no? How would you change the card color for the entire deck all at once so that you don't have to change each card individually? I'm completely new to anki; I literally don't even have it installed (though I will by the time someone reads this).
ohhh when you change a formatting thing to a card type, you change it for all the cards in that card type! the only thing you'll have to do is change the color for the different card types (reading, listening, writing) which is 3 changes. that'll apply to every card within that card type!
@@bianca.phdinprogress ohhhh! Cool! Tysm! I'm still struggling to figure out how to format things. Not really my forte I guess 😅 like I'd really like to know how to add more fields. I go into "edit" and I just see 🥴 lol. So I'm glad to know this! Tysm again! 🥰
