Laine scored 44 goals as a 19 year old and his numbers have been dropping ever since. Do people actually think he can get back to where he was 7 years later? $8.7M is a hefty salary to pay on a gamble and has huge implications on Habs salary structure / CAP. Habs have too many bad contracts as it is.
If I am the Canadiens I run in the opposite direction as fast as I can. I think Laine is one of the best way to go backward in the rebuilt instead of forward.
@@switchgear100 IMO this management team is not interested in acquiring Laine given his off ice issues and tendency to not play a two way game. However since you ask, I would think CBJ would have to retain 50% salary or take on Josh Anderson and his $5.5M salary / CAP hit for 3 years. Seems like a fair trade off to me however I would imagine that in either scenario CBJ would want a young "D" and / or the Winnipeg pick (Waddell will play hardball given one of the reasons he was probably fired was for offer sheeting KK with that ridiculous contract). Laine also has a 10 team ntc so Habs could be on it and Anderson has an 8 team ntc and since CBJ traded him to Habs he probably has then on his list.
@@paulalkenbrack6084 For me money is not the issue. It’s a player that has often been singled out as not having the best work ethics and attitude in the locker room. He is currently slightly older than the core group. I just don’t see a player that will allow the team to take a step forward. I see a player that had a great first year in the league and has been going down ever since. I don’t want to give anyone nightmares but he gives me an Alex Galchenyuk type of career where he was going down until he played himself out of the league.
I understand the importance of taking risks, especially when considering an $8.7 million contract over two years. However, it is essential to remember that this player has had mental health issues, which may or may not have been resolved. He has tremendous potential, averaging a point per game at 6’5”. We've also benefited from excellent trades in the past, such as the Monahan trade, which has set high expectations for first-round picks. In fairness to both sides, I believe a trade involving a 2nd round pick, 3rd round pick, Anderson, and Barron would be equitable.
We're Not Moving Laine To the Habs for anything less than that #5 Pick!! Of Course We'll Eat some Salary and throw in another Forward Like Texier or Kuraly plus a 2 or 3 round pick!! Our Prospect Pool is More Loaded Than Yours so were good there!! and we don't need anyone else you have!! Other than suziki/caulfield/slaf which we know your not moving🫣😉We have other options... And if you don't want him have fun waiting 3-4 years for Demidov/Lindstrom or Ingla to be Ready to Be a Top 6
No way that Kent Hughes would even consider Laine. 2 years and UFA. Plus a guy with a bunch of problems that is not a team guy and is lazy defensively. We shouldn't even waste our time talking about this. I'm sure Hughes would rather get another pick around 15 and take eiserman. Just my opinion
Insanity. 2 years ufa actually makes it interesting since its not a long term gamble. Even if he can't turn it around here he's at least putting up 25 goals minimum. At a decent price that could be a home run
Isn't a Team Guy? Laine went To Our Coaches with the Idea To Play Center to Help Our Team down the Middle!! Before He got Injured He Played Center for 3 Games and scored 4 Points!! He's Defense improved ten fold since he arrived in Columbus!! He's not a shut down defender but Much Improved from where he was!! All of Our Coaches Make You Play Defense here or you get Healthy scratched!! and His "Problems" are that his Dad Died and he needed Time off to Grieve... Great Take Though Lol Whens TSN calling for The Analyst Job?
@@amadeussmith693No Doubt and these fools acting like we (Columbus) wouldn't eat $1.5 to 2 Million and Throw in Texier or Kuraly plus a 2nd or 3rd Round Pick... But we would want that #5 Pick this Year!! Texier and Kuraly are both Swiss Army Knives that Play all Positions Plus PK!! Texier is Awesome and Would be the best Option for Your Guys Lack of Forward Depth!! Kuraly gives You an3rd or 4th lime Center plus PK! Honestly its the Only thing we'd Want from Ya'll... We Have Many other Options
People tend to forget that Laine was bullied out of Winnipeg by Wheeler and Scheifele, and had 2 seasons in Colombus averaging a pt per game, playing on a line with Boone Jenner... Carey Price also went into the players assistance program, and still manage to bring the team to a cup final afterwards. If Laine gets back on track like many others did with the program, he could very well be a huge steal.
Everyone at some point realizes they feel off , and look for help. I'm OK if thr hockey player returns when the human is feeling better. 2nd chance no prob. Ghg!
Zegris costs $5.75 m per year but potential stars like Catton, Sennecke, Demidov., Lindstrom, and Iginla, will cost around 5M FOR ALL 5 per year. We have 2 firsts for next year and a lot of capital for trade. Matheson is 30 and costs $4.5m and first line D for 3 years when we are at the end of rebuild and Hutson, Mailloux, and Reinbacher should be ready for the challenge of leading the PP. We have to pay them more so we gotta' be ready financially and get who ever prepared. This is our most important draft in decades so use all our picks and trades wisely. Matheson and pick 26 for who ever needs a #1 D now. etc, etc.
Yes, you can have a line of Dach, Demidov, and Laine, but for a team that needs scoring, picking up Leonard wouldn't have been a bad idea, but I'm sure Reinbacher will be just fine. Guentzal is turning 30. Everyone wants these scorers in the prime. You have to draft them. 2 teams drafted their cornerstone players in the same 1sr round in 2003. Perry/Getzlaf, Richards/Carter. And we've been suffering for ever until recently. Laine, it depends what you have to give up, and Bergevin's dumb move could return to haunt us with the Necas and Laine trades
Patrick Laine has lost his father last season. It is the reason he has seek help. I think Martin St-Louis is someone that could help him trough that and get the best out of Laine. Martin St-Louis had the same thing happen to him a couple years ago while he was playing for the NYR
The same way we could help Jonathan Drouin. Montreal is a rough city to be in when you are playing for the Canadiens. Let’s not bring a project that is bound for failure. To not acknowledge that there is a lot of pressure involved in playing for Montreal is to put ourselves in a position to bring the wrong player. Laine issues attitude and work ethic is wrong for Montreal.
Oh Josh lol...thank God Jesse is there to make some sense of this discussion...Laine, similar to Zegras, has huge red flags. He's suspect in his effort and isn't defensively responsible. He walks in 2 years...which is just about the time i expect the Habs to be fairly competitive. No way...stay away
Laine-Dach-Slaf Caufield-Suzi-Lindstrom Roy-Newhook-26th pick + Xhekaj-Beck-Tuch Mathesson-Reinbacher Ghule-Hutson Xhekaj-Mailloux Lineup going into next years draft. Our draft capital has us as upgrading our team now instead of drafting for later. Gally can play the role of dach(this year) that year and filling in when needed on 4th line. He could prove useful if we make playoffs. Picks to be used to make us better now. I like that team way more than past 10 years.
We already have dead wood. How much wood do we need to make a fire. We need young players top 2 to grow, then when contenders we can get players in March, or top free agents in 2025.
Josh is great, but he does too much of the misguided "Fanboy" Worship of non compatible players. Jesse is level headed and has a Next Level Understanding of the game; because he clearly understands the full spectrum of players and their ramifications.
Laine, Dach, Newhook, Caufield..!!!!!! Let us hand out more contracts to players that could be great. They are not these.guys, yet. Show me the numbers. Give them all Anderson money or.Gallagher....
Cole is not great. He is good but he is small and is supposed to be a sniper. Dach, Newhook, etc. Hopefully will be good. Montreal has to start waiting to reward players for being good. Not paying them big money because they might be.
The moment the team is atleast leading some where .. 😂BOOM PUT IN A BAD APPLE IN THE BASKET😮IF AND ONLY IF ITS VIDEO GAMING ... AND HE HASNT TRANSFOREMED ALREADY ZOBIE . THEN OK FOR A 2ND ROUMDER AND 50% RETAINED 😅😅😅
I can’t believe the Habs fans even considering wanting Laine. After all these years of patching up and not really going anywhere in the playoffs, who in their right mind would think that a player like him is good for the future run for a Stanley Cup. Wake up !!
Because, he has 2 years in left, they could trade him and get decent value back. That is a great upside, face it, Habs not winning cup next 2 years, probably not even making the playoffs next 2 years either. Not a huge gamble I think
@@TheBalls2thewalls I honestly think there’s no gamble to be made with him. He’s poison and a selfish player. We don’t need a cancer on our team. He can focus on gaming (Fortnite) like he’s always done. Not the kind of guy you want around youngsters.
@@papichulo7187Ahhh Still with the Fortnite rumor from 6 years ago.. Laine Is Loved In Our Locker Room in Columbus!! He tried to Play Center to Help Our Team when Boone When Down but yea He's terrible and his dad died so he went into a Program so that also makes him terrible and you act like we wouldn't eat some contract and sweeten the deal lol Enjoy the Depths of You Division with you at the helm of GM moves
Were still drafting at 5 buddy and he's on a 2 year deal. High risk high reward type deal and maybe we can send anderson or dvorak to columbus to unload a bit more cap space. Im all in for it. Still producing at a 1ppg pace except last year where he played 18 games only so yeah high risk high reward. Newhook Dach Laine would be fantastic on the 2nd line
@@jeremyroy8996 Laine Would Be on that Top Line!! Suzuki, Cole and Laine Would Be Disgusting!! The Problem is, If I'm The GM for Columbus The Only Thing That Interests Me From You Guys Is That #5 Pick!! So My Thinking Is Package Ya'll With Forward Depth That You Need with a 6 Million Per Year Laine and Tex who's amazing plus our 2nd Pick(#35) !! And I get It, Most of You Don't Want to Give Uo That Pick!! But For Me, Columbus Only Needs a Top Line Center, A Top Line Veteran RD and a Goalie!! I know You Guys aren't Coming off Suzuki or Your Top RD and A goalie Deal Would Have to Include Elvis Coming back Which I know You Guys Don't Want!! Lol Plus NOW our #4 Pick Is Hard ASF Now With the Lindstrom Back News!! So I want Demidov and Silayev and If Demi is Gone I want Silayev and Parekh Lol And Our Prospect Pool Would Be Complete... But Nooooo!!! So off To Calgary for Markstrom and Anderson for a Laine/Elvis/Severson or Boqvist Package With Picks Lol Or Off To Nashville for Juuse and Whoever if He doesn't re-up!! The Big reason I wanted You Fellas Pick Is Because I have a Feeling as Soon as Laine is off our Books.... Elias Lindholm Is Gonna Come Get Back With Johnny Hockey!! Then We'd Have Two Top 5 Pick And Then We Still Have Other Shit to Move to go Get a Goalie for The Time Being and Get Elvis outta the Building!! All Love Though!! I like the Habs but Some of Your Fans are Some Real Cya Next Tuesdays!! Columbus's Record Doesn't reflect the Talent We Have here. Its Just been mismanaged and Mis Coached plus Back To Back Years With Actual NHL Record Breaking Injuries!! Plus We've Blown like 40 Late 3rd Period Multiple Goal Leads!! 2 Against You Guys This Year 😉
Blah blah blah, P. Laine another total head case like Dubois, for 8mil. Guentzel is too old, too expensive, and soft. Necas is younger and tougher, he actually throws a few hits.
I like it, because that alleviates the log jam on D and addresses the need for scoring. The contract would be big, but he has to realize that the next two years, he is playing for a contract.
@@johnmcguire188 Except there's not really a logjam on the right-side of our D. Mailloux and Reinbacher would each benefit from playing big minutes / every situation in the A, so you're pretty much looking at Savard, Kovacevic and Barron as RD this year.
Who knows, but in fairness it seems like absolutely nobody has liked playing in Columbus. Also, the Jets had a toxic locker room and thats why Maurice left. i.e. the coach was aware of the issues in Winnipeg and the GM had to resolve by trading some of them but he refused to and told Maurice these are our guys make it work.
He had decent numbers though and he is a pure goal scoring talent. I think he is worthy of a second chance. If anything can be another Monahan situation
The only one I have an issue with is Lindstrom. The back shortened Mario Lemieux career by almost ten years not to mention the impact on his availability. This is why I would rather with the other 3 unless you can confirm that his situation is not bad enough to put a major damper on his career.
@@michelleblanc6377 Salut Michel, J’aime toujours lire vos commentaires et appréciez vos connaissances. Je suis né à Montréal cependant, je vis depuis 33 ans en Écosse. With respect, Mario also battled lymphoma and missed years of playing time which may have caused his back issues. Therefore, IMO, it is not a fair comparison with Lindstrom. Je me souviens des grandes équipes CH des années 70! In Hugo I trust. Go Habs Go!!
Guentzel is going to a contender for sure, most like in the US. Id go in on Laine, worth the risk imo. I would rather Laine than Zegras. The ultimate UFA acquisition for me is Necas. Perfect age and a big gamer on the ice.
OmG There are some Habs fans that aren't totally delusional Lol Laine's Great, He had some bad injury Luck this year(both dirty hits) and the two years before he played almost 60 games at PPG!! He wants a change of scenery due to a teammate dying, his dad dying and our local podcasters harassing him!! but its been nothing but negativity since he came to columbus off the ice... when he's on the ice its Point Per Game damn near
Ray Sheppard was traded from Buffalo to NY Rangers for $1; he scored 24 in 59 games, went to the Redwings as FA; scored 36, 32, 52, 30 in the next 4 yrs. 357 career goals. Brett Hull was considered lazy in Calgary, traded to St Louis, met Adam Oates. Rus Courtnall was traded from Tor to Mtl scored 297 goals in his career. Alexi Kovalev in NY was 2/3rd liner with a nintendo game addiction, traded to PItts became pt/game player. I am not going to research more... but if the price is right, it's okay to take a gamble every now and again.
@irishrootsQ the question was how often do players come back. I gave a list. It's not uncommon. The list is the proof. Each of those players had a stigma, a problem, they all had very good careers.
Acquire Laine with Anderson going back the other way. The poor contracts off set a little, with Laine having way more upside left. You probably have to give up some futures as well in this case Anderson + engstrom + a pick Maybe that’s a unreasonable idk
Liane is for liability, you'd think the Canadiens have learned their lesson by overpaying deficit characters. Liane used to miss practice to play video games and is famous for dogging on defense. He's been vocal in his desire to play in California. Stay far far away.
Iginla's not even on the list...and thank goodness!! Lindstrom is the surest pick. As for Demidov, besides the questions about his speed, and the level of competition he's had, etc., I think it's important to also factor in the slim possibility that the League/government might prohibit Russian players from coming over until the Ukraine War is over. I know it's unlikely, but I can see that they *could* give the current Russian players a 'grandfather clause', but restrict any new ones. In fact, I kinda think they should.
Laine reminds me of Garry Leeman of the Leaf's who had all the tools & had similar problems [OFF THE ICE]. Leeman were picked up by the Habs & it was a [FAILURE] & I see Laine very similar. We should [NOT BE PAYING] big on this guy because this is his second team where his problems have surfaced.
As A Rep for Columbus, I would Like to Offer You Splendid Habs Fans Laine(We Eat 2million) + Your Pick of Alexandre Texier or Sean Kuraly + Our 3rd Round Pick this Year for Your #5 Pick In the Draft this Year!! That Gives You Guys Much Needed Forward Depth and Laine at $6Million with an extra Pick to sweeten the Deal!! Texier Scores, Plays Every Spot and Plays PK!!! You'd Love Him!! Or Kuraly is a Perfect 3rd or 4th Line Center and PK!! Plus ya'll don't have to wait 2 to 4 years On Demidov/Lindstrom or Ingla or Catton to develop😉
Anderson and a second for Laine. If that was the trade I’d say yes. It’s only 2 years so if it doesn’t workout so be it but if it does workout it will be another Kent Hughes mastercraft. Our team likely isn’t competing for another 2 years anyways
The Habs can't take that contract without Columbus taking a contract back. Here let me break it down. The Habs have only one retention slot left. They are using the other 2 currently. They most likely don't want to use it for a trade like this but use it in season if they need to make trades before the trade deadline. So that leaves trading contracts back because the Habs cannot take the full contract. Reason is we have 2 major contracts that we have to extend. Kaden Guhle and Juraj Slafkovsky. For Guhle at most I would want to see is a 5 million contract and 6 years because of his concussion history. Slafkovsky we need to give the same AV percentage that we gave to Caulfield which would mean an 8.6 million 8 year contract. We want this because the player agent will demand this and we know Slaf is going to be a monster in the future. Pay for his future and lock him up for 8 years so his value doesn't skyrocket out of control. If your against giving more then Suzuki, remember Suzuki signed in a flat cap era. The cap will go up by 5% every year now so this is cap inflation and we have to match it. And one final reason, Carey Price's LTIR contract of 10.5 million. Its dead money for us. That cap number always has to be factored in when we start the season. Its why sometimes teams trade for LTIR contracts to hit the cap floor. This season its going to be like 66 million which several teams are under right now. So until that contract is over in 2 years, we don't have a lot of flexibility. So the Habs have to send a contract back so we have room to sign Slafkovsky and Guhle to their extensions. I would like to send either Gallagher or Anderson's contract back but I simply do not know if Hughes would want to do that. Gallagher because I am sure he has some sort of NTC and Anderson because I think Hughes thinks he can improve this upcoming season. I would trade either of these contracts ASAP to free us of those 3 years left in their contracts. Legacy contracts by Bergevin that is holding us back.
Guys, I’m all for giving Laine a shot but Hughes will never make that trade without Columbus retaining salary. Laine is not worth more than Suzuki/Caufield at this point. But we have lots of prospects and throw in’s to make it work!
Laine along with Monahan for 2-3 years. Would be perfect. Need to dump Dvo, Pez and Ylonen. If we could get a decent pick for Armia then he could go too.
Laine would need to be clean. Yes, he has been declining but I wonder how much of that is because of his abuse problem. He has talent, I just wonder why the drop in production, and can it be fixed/reversed?
Ask ask ! What ! I'll take his whole salary and you give me # 4 ! Ask what the guy has problemes that could mess up my team ! Coloumbus should kiss our boots if we take him !
Actually, some betting sites have Lindstrom favorite to be drafted by Montreal...but I think he might be gone top4 so it will likely be either Demidov, Iginla or Sennecke !!!
A BIG Hard NO ...to Lianne !!! His ATTITUDE will poison our dressing room ..!! Always complaining about his ice time ....questioning his use by his coaches ...NO THANKS ...let some other team wrestle with this HEADACHE !!😮😮😮
Sleeper pick to me at 5 outside of the names that have been mentioned is Yakemchuk. If we're gonna take a D it should be him. He's big and right handed. He does everything well and fits more with what the organization really needs. A right side of Reinbacher, Yakemchuk, and Mailloux looks big, tough, and a solid amount of offense.
No risk at all, Montreal has picks out the ass. So many D men that it feels like the 3 goalie situation from last year. We don't want to draft as much anymore. The kids are getting older already and we want to start pushing for the playoffs.
This channel is hilarious. 6’5” physically plays like a 5’6” forward except without the drive. Perimeter player yeah with a good shot but hard pass Rather sign Guentzel or trade Matheson for Necas As for draft, who cares about who the 4 teams take ahead of Habs Habs are guaranteed a good prospect
I always liked laine, he has great character and seems like hes been misunderstood since coming into the leauge. Hes 6"5 with one of the best shots in the leauge and can get 50 goals a season no problem. He doesnt respond well to tough love without communication (benching the player instead of working with them to improve ) like he went through in winnipeg and Columbus. No mistake about it he would be a massive addition to the Canadians and any team that lands him in a trade
Skill and ego. Kovalev 2.0. Man will make the bell center melt. And he will love it. And so will we. Yes to Laine for the right price. Kovalchuck... No!! it wont work. bring this guy in. Bell center melts. We always say the big names wont work in mtl. The opposite is true.. Hope he gets 35/30 and resigns for 8 mil 4 years.
