Franky’s / Tom’s Workers’ backstory is so underrated man - it’s incredible like of all of the others :)

CORRECTION: It was the Klabautermann who put iron plating on the keel. I went back and saw the Merry after bellamy destroyed it and when they were going up the Upstream there was no Ironplating on the keel or until they reached the alter. The Ironplating only appeared there AFTER the morning Ussop saw the Klabautermann repair the ship in the morning on top of the alter.

This interaction between Usopp and Franky is when I fell in love with Franky as a character. I get that people get pissed at Franky for tearing off a piece of the Merry to get to Usopp, but I love his thought process through the whole interaction. He just listened to Usopp's sad story of why he left his crew and now he's hearing that Usopp still wants to be a pirate using the Merry. Franky's a fairly honorable man, so if Usopp wanted to die with the ship; he'd leave him be. But, since Usopp clearly expressed having future aspirations, he couldn't let this aspiring young man foolishly sail to his death. He tried telling Usopp the grim reality and when he wasn't listening and being delusional, Franky did the equivalent of someone slapping their friend when they're about to do something extremely stupid. Then, when Usopp explained the Klabautermann and how he always knew, Franky changed his approach again to being a man who will give the Merry an appropriate send off. Usopp still resisted and Franky changed approach for a third time and explains that if the Merry cared about them enough to appear in physical form, then she wouldn't want to watch them die with her as she sinks. Franky can be a crazy guy, but I love how he altered his approach as he was learning more information from Usopp. In the end, he likes Usopp and wanted to do what he felt was best for his new friend and the Merry.

“ORO” is the Spanish and Italian word for Gold. Also the name of its captain is “Gol D. Roger” 😊😊😊

One thing I appreciate about One Piece is the way it handles moral lessons and worldviews. Namely, it isn't afraid to give contradictory answers in different contexts. This is illustrated much more clearly much much later on, but there are times in One Piece where a character will espouse a truth they believe with all their heart, and stand by that conviction, and it is presented as a heroic action. And then, there will be another character, isolated from the previous instance, who espouses a directly contradictory value... And it's presented as equally bold and heroic. One Piece largely is disinterested in absolute good and evil, and much more about conviction and freedom, and that's pretty neat.

FUN FACT - Klabautermann come from real life German myths. A Klabautermann is a water kobold that assists sailors and fishermen on the Baltic and North Sea in their duties. It is a merry and diligent creature, with an expert understanding of most watercraft, and an irrepressible musical talent. It is believed to rescue sailors washed overboard. The name comes from the Low German verb klabastern meaning "rumble" or "make a noise". An etymology deriving the name from the verb kalfatern ("to caulk" or "to seal" "to repair" "to mend together") has also been suggested

7:29 You realize Oda's genius in putting that scene of the mysterious person in Skypea fixing the merry but everything is falling into place now. He also gives hints about future arcs in this arc in minimal details that you probably won't notice. That's why I love One Piece, at the time I didn't notice these details either and everything is being revealed.

Lindsay being basically Usopp, feelin' for Merry and trying to keep her alive at all costs it's my favorite about this arc.

Nice catch on Tom's tattoo btw! He doesn't seem at all affilitated with Arlong's crew,so there's definitely theories to be had as to why all these fishmen are carrying it!

not bad the translation for the subs they did.. but it was better other subtitles i read. like When Tom say "We were resolutely" other subs said "Do it with a Don!" in a meaning that that's not exactly a word for translation in japanese but a form of saying "determination", so everyone i know that have seen one piece when it was on air this episodes, they all said "Do it with a Don!" with so much excitement! Not to mention that the techinques everyone uses were subbed as they sound in japanese and between () the translation, instead of now that it only sound meh in english Rokushiki (The six powers of the CP9) Shigun (Pistol finger) Soru (shave) Geppo (moon walk) Rankyaku (tempest kick) Kami-e (paper art) Tekkai (iron body) all of them sound WAY better in japanese than in any other translated language.

Klabautermann - real thing. That scene still gets me. This entire saga is easily one of the best in the series. Some of the groundwork that was laid early on begins to pay off here.

im german, and when i was a kid we had a tv show for kids where, at the end of it, there was a blue bear who was a ships captain, who would tell stories of his life to his nephews. he was called captain blue-bear ( käptn blaubär for us germans), and in one of his stories, the klabautermann was a character. obviously inspired by the same north-german legends as oda was. however, there he was more of a....scary creature that you never saw, but was vaguely evil and doing mischief on your ship? i remember it having something to do with fish-sticks lmao. anyway, those stories were based on the book "the 13½ lives of captain blue bear" by walter moers, a book that i can recommend to absolutely everyone! its extremely creative and tells the complete story of the first half of captain blubears life. actually, the creativity and world building very much remind me of one piece itself. anyway, my familiarity with that show/book was the reason i didnt even question it when the klabautermann came up in one piece later. i was like "ohh so it was a little klabautermann guy! makes sense!" and then only later realized that to people who were not familiar with those stories, this would sound extremely weird lmao. i didnt think about that when i first watched/read the water 7 arc back in the day😅

Tom getting thrown into court and immediately speaking facts was both funny and spoke a lot of the kinda guy he is, IF YOU'RE A MAN DO IT RESOLUTELY🗣🗣‼ Ep 247 for me completely dispels the idea a chunk of the community has that Usopp would have left the crew no matter how they delivered the news to him (he wouldn't have listened *specifically* after Luffy's silliness, hell, Franky was even more aggressive and he still managed to make him speak out). Wranky addressed Merry as a person and acknowledged the amount of love Usopp (and the crew) gave to her, it's pretty similar to the lecture the shipwrights gave to Luffy, and what do you know, it worked lol. The problem was never about having emotions but rather letting those emotions let you do reckless things (this goes more so to Luffy because he calls the shots), the bad delivery of the news was unfortunate but it's also important to point out they didn't give Usopp much time to cope either.

Franky is literally trying to save Usopp's life here xD I love Merry, but if Usopp is just gonna take the Merry with him and die, better Franky dismantles it right now. "We can still reclaim the wood and use it in the next ship" of course, but that's exactly what Franky is doing (yes it doesn't look it, but that's anime logic for you) remember that he sells back the wood of dismantled ship to the shipyard.

Imagine being those people that dropped this reaction series because they got too emotional at animals being hurt, this was easily in my top 3 reactions to the Merry reveal.

for the record: the yamata no orochi was just a giant eight headed snake monster. it wasn't significant beyond being a cool snake that tried to eat people and was defeated when susano got it drunk on sake and cut off each head while it slept. It's not a 'world serpent', that's a norse thing. and yeah as others said it has nothing to do with Roger.

"Do it resolutely" I always thought was an awkward translation. Tom's literally saying "do it with a don!", where "don" is the sound of a drum, e.g., do it with a bang. IMO it would've been smoother if it was "do it with spirit" or "do it with gusto".

*The Puffing Tom is one of my favorite backstories. They really did save the lives of this whole town.* In the flashback you see the people of Water Seven were devoid of hope, surrounded on all sides, just waiting for the unavoidable end of all they had. Then we remember how when we got here everyone was so happy and nice, a complete 180° from what it was before. And it was all thanks to Tom 😭

The Klabauterman makes Iceberg's and the galley-la telling Luffy to get another ship feel diferent to me now. First of if Franky know about it then Iceberg knows it too, granted they don't know the Merry has one but still, My point is Iceberg telling Luffy he is a bad captain, feels two fold, in that he is putting the crew in danger but also wasting the Merry's sacrifice as well. Also man, Oro jackson is the greatest ship name in the whole series. Now for One piece at a time: Oro is the spanish word for Gold. Also Tom is right there are no blueprints for a pirate ship,even in the real word, as most of them were stolen.

This is just such a good saga. I feel like Water 7 is where Oda levels up as a writer. He'd always been good, with very intentional story-telling. But the way he ties his narrarive threads together in this arc is something else. Also, I love that you keep asking where Sanji is, I definitely kept wondering about him my first go through 😂😂

Lol I love your frustration when Franky destroy the ship 😂 but remember Paulie and Kaku said (freaking traitor he is, but his job as shipwright really done well) that the Keel of the Going Merry has been damaged, and that replacing the keel of a ship is effectively rebuilding the entire ship from scratch (as the keel is the base on which a ship is built), and that even if they attempted to build a replica of the Going Merry, the crew would be able to tell that it was not the same ship anymore, as they (the Galley-La) are not the shipwrights who originally built the ship and neither do they have the exact same materials that's why you can't just use the old wood from Merry

you may calling franky an ass, but actually he really care about both usopp and merry that's the kinda man he is, he doesn't do stuff without reason, first when he stole the money from usopp is obviously in his mind stealing from pirate isn't wrong, he just stole them for greater good (spoiler alert), he's trying to ripped merry because he doesn't want usopp to sink and die with the ship because he's still young, but he stop after hearing from usopp perspective and begin to understand what kind a crew he and merry had, and comfort usopp about how happy merry must be and after that he offer to take care of merry and told usopp to move on, because if merry sink while carrying usopp and causing him to die, merry will be sad

17:33 that thing you discussed was just the theme for Jaya/Skypeia, it was not necessarily a general theme for One Piece, Oda always does a major theme for every story and arc he write....it is just that you only noticed with that arc, because you picked up on it...but he always does that, every arc had his theme, (it is fun to think re-troactively about past arcs and their themes, since a lot of times the specific theme becomes clear near the end of the arc's story) but a theme is not necessarily something that needs to be carried over to the rest of the story, or at least not necessarily.
