Today's video we are taking a look at two of the most popular cities in California to live in, Los Angeles and San Francisco. They are only a 5 hour drive from each other- but very different cities! I found that in Los Angeles in general you get a lot more space and amenities. In San Francisco, you do get more convenience of walking to things, and really cool old buildings with a lot of character. Which city do you like better?! Comment below!

The point to be made here is that you CAN'T Rent an Apartment in either City for $1500/mo. A 'Room for Rent' is NOT the same thing as an Apartment.

@@bookcadenb4584 - On that note, local rentals of decent quality and relative safety in the Bay Area are still much higher than they should be. EX: a 450 sq. ft. rectangle of a pseudo-cottage with no storage ( except a small basement that floods in the winter ), low ceilings, tiny-nothing living room, decent bedroom, and half kitchen, in downtown Martinez ( high demand ) went for $1K months ago. Yes, it's not SF nor LA, but the landlords tried to be accomodating in charging "less". They could have rented it for $1400...more? They at least weren't fully greedy, but $800 is fair , IMHO. $600 is more like it.

I'm about a hour north of SF got a house, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage, about 1100 square feet, my mortgage payment is less than what one of people are paying renting a room. I think it's insane paying these crazy right rent prices. I really wouldn't want to live in either of these city's. SF has it's needles and poo all over the sidewalks. If I had to pick between the 2, it would be the LA location. I waited until this last housing market crashed and got my house at that time. That was around 6 years or so ago. I just can't see giving someone else a bunch or money to rent and have nothing.

I'm going to venture anywhere in LA to rent a room let alone an apartment means you're making over $100,000 a year. In San Fran at least $150,000 a year to be comfortable and do things. Compare this with the east coast that salary or $4700 per month in a mortage gets you a ton. A mortage that high would be a moderately sized house sitting on many acres of land or a huge house (10,000 sq ft) on a good amount of land. It's crazy. The only people benefiting here at the property investors or owners.

@@j2forew974 Having lived in both as well as SF, they are def not the same. NYC is the most expensive, pound for pound, due to the amount of space (or the lack thereof) and the quality of the buildings. Subway is not very reliable in NYC, and most people have to count Uber/cab in their monthly spendings. The houses/apartments are a lot older in NYC, with citations/code violations a common occurrence. Bay Area rent is super high as well, but there are houses you can rent, not just apartments like in NYC. Looking at realtor.com now, there are many listings around Bay Area for a Single Family Home for less than $1mn if you are to buy. This may exist in the outskirts of NYC, but definitely not somewhere you'd want to live in. LA is def the best bang for bucks out of the three, and downright cheap compared to the other two, no doubt. A couple things to add as someone who lives in San Francisco. $1450 for a room in Nob Hill is on the cheaper side. For those who aren't familiar with the different districts, Nob Hill is one of the more popular spots as its close to downtown. Most rooms in Nob Hill are closer to 1600-1700. Also, as you mentioned, the converted living rooms are very popular and they are horrible. Don't ever live in one because they have very little sound privacy. San Francisco housing is expensive because the average salary in the city is 75k per year. If you are making 75k+ a year, then the rent prices of 1500+ still aren't ideal, but they aren't a problem at all. The city is absolutely worth living in if you do get a job where you're making at least 70k. Any less and you're better off elsewhere.
@BlackHornetTactical
@BlackHornetTactical 4 года назад
How is a city where people shit, pee, inject needles, smoke crack, burglarize stores and people be and all in broad day light and it all being legal besides the burglarizing an ideal city? That accompanied by the CRAZY living cost should drive anyone away!!!! My mortgage is 1560 dollars and I have a 5 bedroom 2800sqft HOME
@scoot5642
@scoot5642 4 года назад
Jose Garcia because the average salary is 75k a year, most in the whole world... for example, being a software engineer at SF will make you 45k your first year. then it raises up to 60k to 90k in 3 years. then over 100k soon after. because of tech companies and advertisements, more people have came to SF which made rent hella expensive but people with lower income homeless. it’s a domino effect
@BlackHornetTactical
@BlackHornetTactical 4 года назад
Scoot yeah and then rent for a 1 bedroom shack is $1500-1800 , and if I’m gonna go to school to be a software engineer I don’t want to live in a one bedroom shack... so it doesn’t matter if you make 75-80k when the cost of living is so high it’s as if you’re making 30k I live in Texas I don’t even have a bachelor degree and I make 120,000k a year but guess what I own a 4 bedroom 3 bath custom built 2400 sq ft home on 20 acres and don’t even pay 1800$ a month for it...

Jose Garcia no one gives a crap about your dream. u don’t have to go to school to learn cs. either way, the ideal amount to pay for rent is 30% so this video isn’t even ideal as smart individual will live here if only they make 6 figures within couple of years. if skilled and have proper experience, you could easily make over 200k or become start your own business and make millions. become a senior at google (best place to work) and you will make more than 285k. everyone is different due to their job and rent not expensive for you because you make more than the average person in texas
@BlackHornetTactical
@BlackHornetTactical 4 года назад
Scoot technology is the future and I wasn’t disagreeing with you. But thats the only thing you mentioned as a job in Cali though LOL. Why is it that so many people move to Texas then if Texas was such a shithole? You’re an idiot if you think California has more opportunity than Texas. You make your own opportunities, it just happens that Texas has MANY jobs that pay pretty decently and you don’t need to spend 200k on a degree to start making 60k and then years later make more money. Look at what’s going on now with corona virus, everyone is loosing their shit if things were to get bad real bad I don’t think a degree in software is gonna help you that’s what I’m referring to, living in a 1 bedroom 1800$ a month shack won’t help either. Living on a big property will help though. You can say whatever you want but I’ll keep enjoying my land, my guns, and my way of life free of California’s retarded liberal ways of restricting everyone’s life in that state and making gas 5 bucks a gallon among other things, LOL I paid 1.21$ just yesterday for gas

@@christinerowlanddeburca4399 Yeah self-driving cars themselves won't magically reduce traffic. It's the economics and people's mindset that will play major roles, and in turn, influence future city planning. If owning a car is 10-100x times more expensive and also more trouble because of maintenance, parking etc., people will abandon privately owned cars and join the autonomous fleets. But I don't see that happening any time soon. Hopefully it will happen in our lifetime. Ridesharing didn't create this level of shift in economics. Many people become drivers to earn money full time. The rides are still expensive in many cities and in low supply areas. People simply can't abandon car ownership for ridesharing in most cases.

I am from SF but I came to LA for grad school and I really thought I would love it here. There are pros and cons of living in both. One of the pros of LA is that you get to drive from place to place instead of using public transportation. The con is there is a lot of traffic. In SF you basically can't even really own a car...you could but it's honestly just a waste and your car would most likely get stolen/broken into. The thing I really don't like about LA is it is SO hard to meet people here. People are so immersed in their own bubble. People are also extremely superficial. It truly is "LaLaLand" because everyone has these unrealistic fantasy careers yet they try and flex anything they have. Even if you do meet people, they are never willing to go out of their way to meet with you because of the traffic/they are so obsessed with maintaining a certain "image". There is so much to do in LA but no one to do it with. Yes the rent is cheaper in the sense that you get more bang for your buck but it's so easy to get isolated in this huge city. I think SF has a culture of people that are a bit more open minded and willing to ACTUALLY meet up and develop their friendship circles. Maybe I am biased because I haven't found my people here yet.

@The Shitstorm Starter Social liberalism is not the same as "the left" or socialism. Democrats are for the most part socially liberal capitalism supporters that just vary on the amount of welfare and services they support, most aligning as "centrists", being more generous than Republicans but less so than social democrats like Bernie Sanders. They still tend to let the rich and corporations get away with a lot, though Republicans are even worse. Socialists would be targeting the rich and corporations a lot harder, would try to get every place unionized in the least, and ultimately trying to make companies worker owned and run (or helping establish such companies). They would do everything they could to ensure everyone has affordable housing, including the jobless and underpaid (those who are currently homeless), including building many places themselves rather than relying on private developers who tend to just build luxury apartments and condos. As for the addicts and mentally ill who make up many of the homeless on the streets, that's always a tough challenge but I think socialists would be more open to reopening mental health facilities but with strict oversight so they don't turn out like they were known for in the past that led to both Republicans and Democrats deciding to put an end to them.

The SF apartment is most likely rent controlled and it’s in an expensive part of town (Nob Hill, i think). The LA apartment is huge and unique for that price. I can almost guarantee that you won’t find an apartment for that price unless you live in the valley. Also, I personally wouldn’t want to live in Hollywood. Also, comparing these two apartments are apples and oranges. Rents are higher in SF but you also get paid more on average. Katherine is able to move in at that rental cost because she is moving in with an original tenant(s) who has lived there and is under rent control. Since Katherine is not the original occupant of the San Francisco apartment and one of her roommates is the original occupant, the landlord would have given Katherine a "6.14 notice" within 60 days after she moved in. As long as the original occupant remains in the apartment, the unit is under rent control with the allowable annual rent increase as outlined in sfrb.org/sites/default/files/Document/Form/571%20Allowable%20Annual%20Increases%2020-21%20EN.pdf However when the last original occupant vacates the unit, the landlord is entitled to apply an unlimited rent increase under the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act. sfrb.org/topic-no-153-rent-increases-under-section-614-and-costa-hawkins If she decides to stay in the unit, she must sign a new lease and become the new original occupant at the newly increased rent.

@@evamaria644 It's how rent control works in San Francisco. It may be different in other cities. I don't know what you mean by "environmental conditions". It is a vague term. But most renovations can be made. It's the permit process that can be daunting. And not all apartments in San Francisco are old. Again, "old" is a vague term. Also, apartments buildings that were constructed after June 13, 1979 are not subject to rent control. sfrb.org/topic-no-017-overview-covered-and-exempt-units
