As a long-time bmx rider turned mtb/dirt jump rider, I think riding a dirt jumper on small skate park ramps is no fun. Everything is so much harder. With that said, once you get on some bigger jumps, 5+ foot take offs, the dirt jumper is amazing. Tailwhips are much slower and take more effort, and i have to bus the barspins around to keep the wheel from dropping, but everything just feels so much better on the dj on bigger jumps. Ride your air bag set up on it and you'll fall in love

As a Dirt Jump rider myself i loved seeing Matty trying it out and deciding to build one up for himself! However the forks have travel for a reason and should not be locked unless you're riding a pump track Usually it should be set up in a way that it will use half of its travel max on a normal/harder hit and will only bottom out when you land really flat More experienced riders can also use the rebound to pop even higher out of transitions and some suspension will also help with hitting your butt haha

Dj bikes are not meant to be jumped with the forks locked out. That is for pedaling back uphill. The geometry of the frame need the suspension to move. That’s why your hitting your butt so much.

i'd like to see matt and the guys have a go with a 24" street trials bike, like an inspired arcade or fourplay, be interesting to see how the bmx skills cross over

I can't wait for Matty to take a custom dirt jumper to the trails. And like everyone says, don't lock the fork.

omg yes!!!! been wanting this video for years!!!! more dirt jumping videos!!!!!!!111 lil tip you can put the seat up so the rear of the seat should be lvl with the top of the rear tire and that i find is the perfect seat spot don't get your but eaten from the rear tire its also better for pinching the seat with your legs makes the bike feel more stable in the air but still low enough that it dont feel to high up its not in the wayhtly

So muh fun to see Matt trying out all these different biking disciplines. Your channel made me by a bmx at are 35. 4 years later I've decided that a dirtjumper was more to my liking. But I do miss the bmx a little bit, just couldn't afford/justify both. That said, I'm really happy with the dirtjumper! P.S. I have that fork and it really locks out, but without damaging the fork. Gives tiny amount suspension locked out if you land harsh. Personally I prefer it 1-2 clicks from locked out. But I don't jump smoothly like a bmx:er and could loose 20 pounds without looking ripped..

Ryan Nyquist rode one or two seasons im FMB World Tour and he was veeeery succesfull 😉 So maybe Matty will try for fun:D

I used to ride a 26" small sized hard tail with full derailer set up back in the early 2000's after BMX racing , jumping and street for years growing up. It was mainly for commuting and occasional trail rides and light street. "Bunny hops stairs etc." The first time I took it to some serious BMX trails I cased a double in the warm up section and bent the fork ,head tube and front wheel. So back to a 20" I went. Now that I am 47 yrs old I have a hardtail mtb for exercise and quite time. But I'd be fibbing if I said that I haven't Googled MTB DJ bikes about a thousand times, I also think the SE line of wheelie bikes are super cool as well. Cheers

Per the intro discussion: getting your junk wedged into the rear tire = "the ol' pickle stretcher". (obviously not literal but it's endearing and funny as hell) Oh, and as rad as Semenuk is, Emil Johanssen is doing things I genuinely believe other riders are simply not capable of yet. I genuinely feel he will be the first to to a 360 to 360 back. He's already the most ambidextrous rider in the world and is doing tricks like tailwhip to oppo 360 down whip (and usually a barspin thrown in for good measure).

man i'ts so good you're shining light on some of the different disciplines of bicycling, specially one so close to my heart there's nothing quite like spending a day in the woods sending it, building was great too! you should spend a day at some jumps if somewhere has a dig day

This has been a great video to watch - I am torn between even keeping my bmx bikes now that I have gotten so used to riding my DJ in skateparks. I'm not a spinny trick, peg sliding kind of rider and I find that my dj is better all around (park, jumps, pump tracks, street) and on any wall 4 foot or bigger spins and airs just as well. I am 6'2 and weigh 250 though so there is that....

What helped me with my dirtjump bike is raising the seat up very similar to how he has his bmx bike this way you butt will hit seat before it hits tire buzz…hopefully you guys can come to grom dad road 2 rocvery jam next weekend…matty should take my dirtjumper through the dirtjump line!

At 04:54 Scott is actually right. Manitou is the only brand that puts the crown of the fork on the backside instead of the front for footjam tricks.

It’s generally not good to lock out the fork when putting a lot of pressure on it, you would only lock it out if you’re climbing or maybe just riding flat so there isn’t any bob even if it’s pretty stiff. Even on the ramps you would keep it unlickrd

Great video guys! i'm an MTB guy but been watching you since the bmx olympics. MTB jump bikes are so much fun, but you defo need to get your setup right as Matty has demonstrated. After yesterday's video with Matty riding the bmx complete off the shelf i was surprised that he didn't raise the seat height a bit on the jump bike. You should get some other BMX guys who ride MTB on the show like Matty's rival mr Nyquist and play a game of MTB :D keep up the great work!!

Those manitou forks feel the best with fully open compression but max psi. Also I may have missed it in the vid but you should definitely put a hydraulic brake on the rear

I have the same bike!!! In XL. Best bike I've ever owned. Nothing factory is left on the frame but, im 6'5 240 pounds and i fuggin send it so, its a damn strong frame. You have those short legs man. A 24 inch wheelset would solve the issue. No problem running 24" wheels on a 26".

I love the GT La Bomba, personally I think it’s too long for Matty, he should look at getting a short Marin Alcatraz 👌🏽 And if he doesn’t get on with the La Bomba I’ll take it off your hands and put it to good use 😉

It's also easier to get your leg over the top tube on a BMX for can cans compared to a dirt jumper due to the steep angle of the top tube. My dirt jumper certainly feels much better on bigger jumps. I also got rid of the seat it came with and got a Colony Pivotal seat and raised the seat so that the back of the seat was at the height of the rear tyre which stopped the butt buzz Matty was experiencing and let's me lock my legs to the bike better for more control. I have to say that my BMX and my dirt jumper are my 2 favourite bikes for all out fun.

why is the fork on backwards? i have been mountain biking for about three years and have ridden bmx for about 2 but i have never seen this. what purpose does it serve and how does it affect the ride of the bike?

I have rode bmx for 30 years and just built my very first custom Dirt Jumper!

Every once in a while I would run into a guy with a fixed gear mtn bike at a skatepark and there anyways super smooth and can boost super high off the jumps. And there turndowns and tables were always picture perfect and locked in lol.

you can run a giro brake on the la bomba because of the bolt holes on the head tube

First time I did a 180 on one, my butt hit the back wheel and the tire/seat pulled my pants off me. Next thing I knew, I’m on the ground in our culdesac, with my butt hangin’ out and my pants sucked into my bike. 😂 definitely takes a few sessions to remember having to side saddle all the time.

You need to try some dirt jump trails that is where they are more fun, you need the speed and flow of a trail for 26 to be fun. Skateparks always look a bit janky and are for 20" wheels only imo. Great seeing you do tricks I could never do first try 👊. You need to try a slopestyle bike next... Please please please

Matty should build up a 24” with a shorter travel fork. Maybe a little less wide handle bar. And ride some bigger jumps. The tighter skatepark stuff might not be as fun or easy.

Ive been saying it for awhile....Matty needs to step his game into the slopestyle mtb game.

Ride a lower/less travel front fork (Circus pro is good), nose the seat forward more so less angle and get a less aggressive frame geometry and you will be good.

For the tuck no hander dirt jump/MTB riders don't go as far up as you do, bars are just below nipples but you extend the upper body more. Also as others said no point locking out the suspension at a park like that. Also lean further back the seat buzzing thing happened to me a whole lot when I first got a dirt jump bike. Unfortunately it got stolen so I went back to scooter/bmx.

It's really hard to transfer between bmx to mtb, & David Godziek does it easily and sending the same exact tricks in mtb as he does in bmx !!

I used to have my seat welded to my frame because the integrated seat clamp broke and wedge post were not around at that time. My seat was lower than my back wheel in the seat stays

You want a real rush Matty? Downhill trials is where it's at! Speed, technical sections and badass bikes that would eat up a sidewalk kerb at full sprint, NO JUMP! Seriously give it a look!

The crown is on the rear for foot jams to protect the stanctions

I believe they have short rear fender or mud flap for the rear tire.

You need bigger jumps and more air time for a bigger bike. Also stay more centred on the bike, you have the wheelbase to avoid going otb.

Dont ride with the fork locked. The lock isnt designed to withstand any sort of force or pressure. Add more air pressure or adjust rebound etc for fork feel

You should try a trial run of a trials bike and become matty macaskill
