This beautiful blue fish was suffering from a major rail ding. We get her fixed up and even got the airbrush out to do some color matching. Check out the end of the video to see the before and after.

Considering there's minimum 2 x more glass on the bottom lap and 3 x on the rail edge when the surfboard was originally built. 1 x 4oz layer is not enough glass for this repair. However no doubt you've got skills with air brushing. But at least they will come back to you when the repair fails.

Love the vids! Super helpful. With the MEKP 8-10 drop per oz ratio, how much time does it usually take between pouring/filling the resin and full cure for sanding? And does it vary for the fill/lam/sanding resin stages? My times are all over the place.

Thanks dude! Usually a 3-4 hours. Yeah I hear you with the inconsistent times. Temperature and himidity has a lot to do with cure times. I’ll add a few more drops on a cold day.

I had a near identical ding, only deeper and wider. The guy who did it even admitted he may dinged my board with an slightly smug attitude. I just shrugged my shoulders like, ''I can afford it''. Just another day at Law St. I got it fixed, somewhere in OB or maybe PB, $35 I think. They took about a 2-3'' pie shaped wedge out of the rail for the repair. Did a great job.

What attachment do you have on that air powered Dremel? I have to do a similar repair and I want to clean up a lot of spots on the board that are dinged up and would love to use a similar tool to do that. I have a Dremel but I’m wondering what attachment would be best/wet, sandpaper grit.

I find it curious how you lay your laminations. If you cut your patch of cloth to its desired size before you wet it out, you can skip a whole sanding step here and save on a lot of cloth that would cover other repairs. I'm sure there's a method to the madness though, any particular reason you laminate that way?
@Rogue_wave
@Rogue_wave Год назад
Hey dude! I’m lucky enough that the supplier I use hooks it up with cloth I pay about $50 for a full 120yd roll. I don’t prefer to cut it because I feather my patches either way before hot coating. If I don’t feather my lam and just hotcoat over it, then I get burn through when I sand the hotcoat and then have to apply another coat of resin.

when you need to hotcoat a ding that is on the rail, you tape off the one side hotcoat but when you need to hotcoat the other side do you need to sand the line which your first hoatcoat ended? Im confused how you get adhereance without sanding?
@Rogue_wave
@Rogue_wave Год назад
Hey good question- no need to sand the line on the flip. You can overlap your tape line or tape just under it if you want to try and get a smooth finish and do less sanding. I’ve never had results that save much time with the second method and if anything there is a small gap that doesn’t look good so I usually overlap the tape line by about 1 mm and then use my finishing sander to sand it flush once both sides are cured.
@alexkanish3390

Is the sanding resin used Polyurethane or Epoxy? Can MEPK be used on either or just PU or just Epoxy? Sorry noob question here..

Did some repairs on a Lost Carbon wrap(epoxy) and had some issues with the resin filler mix just bubbling away after I poured it in the ding? Any reason why it would do that. It literally looks like one of those mud pots in Yellowstone, just gurgling and bubbling
@USCengnr08

Assuming your epoxy board is EPS foam...did you use polyurethane resin? That stuff will melt EPS

@Rogue_wave
@Rogue_wave Год назад
Hey Keith! Two options, first you can mix your filler thicker. Second, If it’s a ding that requires a thin mixture, just paint a little epoxy on the foam and let it cure, then apply your filler and it won’t bubble.

Bro, that repair is going to crack out the first surf. I don't know where you learned to fill a void, but your slurry is far, far too liquid. Your goal should be to match the density of the foam as closely as possible. The slurry should not flow easily. Just mix resin and catalyst first, before you add the microballoons. Surfboards flex, but that mostly solid chunk of hard resin will not, and it will stay stiff as the board flexes around it. You finished very well, no doubt, but unless that's a wall hanger it's not a repair worth paying for.
@Rogue_wave
@Rogue_wave Год назад
Thanks dude! Haven’t seen this board again, if the repair didn’t hold I would have. I garauntee my work. Customers can bring their boards back and I’ll redo it for free if the repair doesn’t hold. Resin makes a physical as well as chemical bond to foam, so it’s actually stronger in the spot that was repaired. Flex would be an issue if it was a larger repair area, but it’s not. BTW I have a new video coming out that you’re going to love…
@werepat
@werepat Год назад
@@Rogue_wave the repair being stronger than the board is where the fault lies. You want to try to keep the repair *just as strong* as the board. If the aim was to just make a very strong repair, we'd be using concrete and rebar! And, with all due respect, the kooks who get run into or run into other boards probably aren't surfing Mondo's hard enough to pop your repair out anyway!
@stevenbailey93
@stevenbailey93 Год назад
Repair was 50% wrong. Initial prep of damaged area was over sanded. I would have used a Foam Wedge in deeper damaged rail. Qcell should have been sanding resin and too much Qcell was used in the repair. No need to sand after lamination, I would have Hot Coated om top of Lamination and then trimmed. Less overall sanding, reducing the risk of more damaged.

@@Rogue_wave My background in surfboard repair is based on my years of experience. I worked for South Shore Manufacturing for 2.5 years. Where I learned all aspects of surfboard making and repair. I started Surfixx Surfboard Repair Service in the late eighties. My repair shop repaired boards for 10 Surf shops between Seal Beach to Newport Beach, plus walk-ins. We averaged 75 to 150 repaired surfboards per week. I was mentored by not only Jerry Mowe, the owner of South Shore Manufacturing, but also Bruce Jones of Bruce Jones Surfboards and Rich Harbour of Harbour Surfboards. Rich was also one of my advisors for my MBA. My final paper for my Master's was on the art and business of surfboard repair.

Hey, I've been repairing my own and friend's boards for twenty years. Not professionally, and I'm not saying I'm even close to your level, but when I first started out, if my fill was runny at all, the repair would crack out after the first surf. My father is a structural engineer who worked at ILC Dover and advised me to try to match the substrate density better with my fill material to try to maintain flex properties. Why do you suggest a runnier fill than what was done in the video?
@werepat
@werepat Год назад
But I agree about the foam wedge to match substrates. For sure.
