Lab reports are a huge part of the engineering curriculum (as well as many science majors that have labs). You will likely do a lot of them throughout your college career and in this video I outline some things you can expect.
Lab reports will differ for everyone but in general you can expect many similarities such as making plots and tables, or explaining the purpose of the lab and including equipment that you used.
You may not enjoy doing lab reports in college, but they are important because many engineers have to write technical documents in their career in a very similar way to a lab report. In the video I outline some of things I had to do in my first job as an engineer in terms of technical documents and why I had to write them.
►Example Lab Reports
Controls Class Lab Report: docs.google.com/document/d/1B...
Wireless Communications Lab Report: docs.google.com/document/d/1X...
Digital Signal Processing Lab Report: docs.google.com/document/d/1K...
*Note that the digital signal processing report is very long, but that's because we had to include all of the code that we wrote which took up a lot of room. These were also all labs from my 3rd and 4th year.

Pro Tip: WORK PROGRESSIVELY TOWARDS LABS Reports; it's more painful to start and finish a Post-Lab Report on the last day than when you have worked towards it during the week.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to lay down the blueprint on how lab reports work. Much appreciate

Great Meme Warrior Er.... I'd call Intro Chem labs in College harder than Intro Physics Labs (Then again, I've only done Dual Enrollment Chem and AP Physics 1 )

It is quite impressive that at college you've done so many lab reports so each time you can learn more and more and be better at doing this, also making it a habit. At my university in England they just expect us to do 1 lab report per year and get it marked (we have also other projects, like essays, media projects but they follow the same rule of doing them once). It sounds theoretically great, not too much to do and you expect it's so great to work only once for a project, but how can you expect that you can do a great work only once in a year, without constant feedback each week? It's like trying to learn everything for a great lab report and do it just once, and based on the rubric they expect you to do a great job at the first time. And might be the criteria lower for the first year than for the second year, let's say, but having a similar project to do only in the next year is such a big gap without feedback and repetitions.

This was super helpful, was wondering why we had to do so many lab reports

This was awesome, Thank you for putting this out, very well done. I've been doing labs but like you said, there's no real in depth teaching of how to actually do it. Just an example and hopefully you figure out the format.

Sounds like you have never used LaTeX, great for all the technical/scientific documents. Amazing video though! I remember doing labs in my high school science class. Always loved doing the experiments though I always hated writing out a report afterwards.

We have to only write one conclusion per group lab report but grades differ per group member because we get to give each other marks out 6

By the way except the project were you supposed to type lab reports or write them in hand. We have to do them on pen and paper in IIT Kharagpur.

Thank you! Really appreciate it :). And I do have two videos on aerospace engineering already (one on aeronautics and one on astronautics) and also a mechanical vs aerospace one. Idk if you've seen those but just in case make sure to check them out! I'm sure I'll have more in the future though.

I always thought labs were much more complex in college, but it seems to be very similar to what I do in high school.
@zachstar
@zachstar 6 лет назад
Yeah on average I did notice that the labs weren't really difficult. Some labs were tough and some lab reports took a long time, but on average it wasn't the case of the how many we had to do.

Here we need to use NBR rules... It often takes longer to organize all references then writing the texts!

Hey Major Prep! Any progress or luck on finding sources for making a video about Engineering Physics?
@zachstar
@zachstar 6 лет назад
No luck yet! It's funny a lot of people don't even know that major exists when I ask them. I'll look harder soon enough but been focusing on other videos lately. Sorry for the wait but I promise it'll be here.
@Quintessenza

MajorPrep I completely understand, I experience the same responses. You may have to check around Universities that are known to offer the program which are few. But Cornell, Stanford, Princeton, UC Berkley, Universiry of British Columbia, U of Toronto, Colorado school of Mines are all known to offer strong programs in that major. So you may have to check and email personnel around those schools to be a bit more successful. I know Stanford has a website dedicated to engineering physics grads called "EPIC" that tells you what people are doing and where they are now after they graduated the major. Maybe this could be of some use to you hopefully :D

@zachstar 6 лет назад
Thank you for the heads up! Yeah I messaged some people I knew from stanford and it's been no luck but I'll keep looking. I knew a lot of people from Berkley as well which I can check out. I'm honestly really interested in learning more myself because I was on the fence with majoring in physics or engineering, so this is something I may have chosen for all I know.

Hi MajorPrep what are the advantage of doing a dual degree in mathematics and engineering or chemistry and engineering other than just saving time and money, does it increase your employment chances or do you get paid more?
@zachstar
@zachstar 6 лет назад
I did a video on doing a double major or a minor and the gist of it is that it can only help to get a dual degree (so long as you don't sacrifice your grades or extra curricular opportunity). However, there wasn't much evidence saying a dual degree guarantees you a pay raise or more chances at employment, in fact lots of studies said it didn't help much in those regards. A master's degree is usually what gets you that pay raise. Not saying this is always the case but that's the idea I got from doing research on the topic. If you are up against someone for a job with a similar resume to you except you have that dual degree, then yeah it'll probably help. But in other situations it won't, just depends really.
