On my 13th birthday, my French Grandmother took me into the city and to a French beauty counter. She bought me my first cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. At 16, she started paying for my six weekly visit to the beautician for a facial. Her mantra was "gorgeous skin shines beauty". It has paid off in that I have constantly been complimented on my "beautiful skin" and truthfully I have never had to wear much makeup. On that subject, she advised me mascara and lipstick only ..... You should never leave a pillowcase full of your makeup after a night of passion! She put me into French lingerie at 16 .... Everything should match ..... Buy a bra? Then buy two knickers to match. Hand wash your undies. Perfume? Expensive and layer. Make it your signature ..... And yes, you can leave a spray of that on his pillow 😉 She was very elegant and I am so grateful for her advice. I still prefer matching shoes and bag! Her other big issue was weight. Keep it low. She was incredibly precise on eating. She would make me consomme (bone broth) and insist that I had a small cup before eating my main meal .... Nutritious and filling! Great piece ..... Very much enjoyed!

I wouldn't say Madonna represents the entire lot of women outside France haha I srsly believe that I have tried almost everything to look younger + delay aging as much as possible, anything from face exercises, vitamin C serum, Fraxel, collagen supplements and of course Retin A (7 years straight), home devices and what not. However, nothing made any real difference compared to the high-quality derma pen I purchased for around 100 bucks. Within 3 months of use, my skin has improved DRAMATICALLY. I don't look like I'm 18 again, but definitely not 44 either. My fine lines have disappeared completely, and my nasolabial folds are way less are nonexist (Never had jowls though). People often underestimate the power of wounding and the revolutionary effects it can have on the skin and instead spending thousands on useless treatments like Botox/fillers which can look unnatural over time due to muscle loss, or fillers due to tissue displacement.

Shhhh...don't tell everyone! (Joking) Ive been microneedling for almost 10 years - most guess I'm @ 15 YEARS younger than my birth certificate says. I DO it myself at home, quote aggressively in places, and lightly in others,,maybe 1x month. I am 63

+1 for kora. I've been doing microneedling since it started 12 or so years ago. Nobody believe I am 55. They all say I am in my 30's or early 40's. As you know, as we get old, our skin gets thinner therefore creating wrinkles. But the wounding kept my skin still thick and youthful. Your comment will help so many women to restore their skin..

I'm 50. My 'secret' is good posture, no foundation, little to no makeup, sunscreen. Good duet, exercise, abd acknowledging that im 5p and want to look like a nuce looking 50 year old, not a 40 or 30 year old. End of story. I will never cut my face either. Unless i get mauled by something and will need reconstructive plasric surgery.

I am a 70 year old Australian woman. I visited Paris for my 50th, birthday and have never had so much attention from men in my life. I initially thought it was because I was blonde, and then I thought it was my easy going Aussie attitude. Aussie singer, Kyle Minogue was popular in France at that time. Don't get me wrong, Ive always been considered attractive, but the french men put me on another level. Now I am 70, I regularly get told how youthful I look. I put it down to genetics, staying out of sun, even though I am Aussie, and also being vegetarian for 25 years.

I once heard an ageing expert on the radio say that there's one year in your life when you'll really age and it's definitely been the case for me in the past year, going from 57 to 58. Compared to selfies I took a year ago, everything has gone south, I have become jowly, new lines have appeared, my face muscles move differently, I seem to frown and raise my eyebrows more, which I'm trying to control because I'd like my forehead to remain relatively wrinkle-free. I have enlarged lymph nodes on the neck which my doctor can't get rid of, apparently the medical profession sees them as "normal" but they're big lumps that even a scarf can't disguise. My skin has lost elasticity, my arms and legs look especially look flabby. But I'm happy with my weight and how I look in clothes and realistically at my age I can't expect to look 40. I am kind to my body and I love it despite the ageing and all the imperfections. I used to be fat and have acne, now my skin is clear and healthy-looking. I still have lovely thick hair so I am not complaining, definitely not planning on having any cosmetic procedures or surgery, I don't have the money and I'd be too afraid of something going wrong, I also believe they make you dependent and more insecure, not less. I do my own mani and pedicure, my feet look great, I don't need to go to shop to have them done, if your nails are healthy, you don't need to paint them, I actually enjoy showing them au naturel! I eat well and that's so important, I'm whole-food plant-based and I don't eat processed fats, including all oils, just healthy fats like avocado and nuts. I want to embrace old age, I'm happy to look my age, but well-groomed, moisturised and stylishly dressed to the best of my ability. I don't want a beauty routine that takes an hour or more a day or involves dozens of products. One thing that has changed is that I've started to wear a tinted cream on my face to look less pasty-faced when I'm not tanned. I come from Italy but visited France and have lived in London for 40 years, where people don't look at you! It's a little bit scary to live in countries like Italy and I suspect France where there is so much pressure on women to look in a certain way, because you may feel like you are despised if you don't. Let's all be less judgemental and kind to others, there are a lot of reasons why others may not look youthful or slim or well-dressed, appearance is important because it reveals health, self-respect and self-love, but sometimes life gets in the way and you may not look your best, so be nice to those who may not look very good - I've been there too.

Not every French women above 50 looks like Inès de la Fressange or Sophie Marceau. They can also be full bodied and/or on the heavier side. What set them apart IMO is their acceptance that everyone age and it's always best to make the best with what you have. They also know that indulgence is good for the soul when it's done once in a while, not everyday. Living in Europe also means you get to be more active because you need to walk more so that takes care of the daily exercise . Para-pharmacy products are of top quality and priced democratically. They dress neatly with functionality in mind and prefer to have une bonne mine than a face full of makeup. These common sense practices come across as chic and put together because they feel effortless yet disciplined.

I definitely have emulated the French look most of my life. Currently my make up routine is minimal…. no foundation, no eye make up, no big hair. After applying moisturizer, and lightly filling in my sparse eyebrows, I apply a bit of powder bronzer on my cheekbones, and maybe forehead and chin, put on some lipstick and voilà! Oh, and my mid length hair is always clean and bouncy.

Great video, Alice. We overdue everything in the US, that's the problem. The Kardashians should not be anyone's role model!! I'd like to look good for my age, not look 20 years younger, specially when everyone in your immediate circle already knows how old you are!! Believe me, and this is something the younger generation does not get till they are that age themselves; life gets better after 50, no doubt.

On gray hair, what actually inspired me to stop dying my hair dark was a fabulous older woman stepping out of her hairdresser’s in the 9th arr. with perfectly coiffed platinum hair! I thought, if she looks that fantastic then I can do this. I still dye my hair from time to time but I choose the lightest ash blond now, not a dark chocolate. I maintain my silver with a purple shampoo and conditioner one a week and I’m never going back to dark hair!

Yes the age well concept is so true! I am French and for my mom there was nothing better than just taking care of yourself and trying to embrace yourself at each stage of your life. Enjoy what each decade has to offer to you in your fashion choices, makeup choices etc. There are thing that are a little too mature looking when you're 20? Wait patiently for your 30s and it will look better. Also the diet thing, again, very spot on. As a rule of thumb when people ask me why are French women more lean in comparison to other populations, it's because of that principle. You can eat anything you want, variety in the diet is key to be healthy, but with moderation. Moderation is a keyword in the French habits. Moderation in the style, in the attitude, with your diet etc, AND, last but not least SUNSCREEN! I started at a very young age because my mom taught me to. But all and all, so many points resonates with my personal experience. Staying away from stress, living slower, sleeping well, keeping an eye on what I eat, vitamin C and retinol (do that too) etc. and I am not even from Paris, I am from the ''province'' as we say it. And on a side note, I just wish more and more ladies would embrace their gray hair. A beautiful silver needs some maintenance as well, but I find it so beautiful on every ladies I cross who embrace it.

I’m thrilled to be a healthy 64-year old woman and don’t mind looking like one. It’s natural, easy (except for the hot flashes) and it has its advantages, no periods or pregnancy worries, no stress, no having to shave legs, etc. I very nearly died of an infectious disease at age 46, so every day of life is a precious gift! What’s a few inches on the waist or some wrinkles? They’re just not important, only health, family and self-fulfillment are. We Americans do have a youth-worshipping culture, sadly, perpetuated by women who can’t accept their aging, as well as men who expect all women to look like 18-year olds forever. Retirement years are a wonderful period of life, enjoy it. It helps not to put all one’s eggs in the looks basket. If that’s all a woman values about herself there won’t be anything left when that goes, as it will, eventually.

I agree wholehearted with your comment…it is real and wise. But what American women are experiencing so aggressively for a long time is partly coming from the beauty industry, which is now spreading to the rest of the world. I believe this pressure has existed forever, but it has been exacerbated to a point of no return. Just recently I saw a latin woman who went to South Korea for a facelift and come back as a caricature of a manga, (100% another person)

There is something so comforting about growing older to me. My kids are grown, and now that I’m 65 I have a love for myself that I couldn’t appreciate until I got to my 50’s. I have great genetics from my Spanish father & Mexican mother. My grandfather was French as well. I don’t look 65. But I don’t drink, smoke, eat lots of fresh food and grew up with parents that shopped for fresh produce and healthy meals. I weigh 120 lbs and love my life & welcome age. I do what I want go have dinner & to cafes with my daughter. And yes. Dress well. My mother & my mother dressed elegantly. Love your age & your body.

First of all, American celebrity culture is not representative of normal people. The Kardashians et al. does NOT reflect most American women. Secondly, the U.S. is a huge country with people who have descended from extremely diverse backgrounds, so all of us look entirely different. Furthermore, there are major regional differences when it comes to fashion and beauty approaches. Women in New York, LA, Dallas, Miami, etc. have very different looks. Also, there are huge differences between urban, suburban and rural looks outside of heavily populated areas, too. Furthermore, the kinds of food we cook often reflect our vast ethnic diversity. There is no one type of American anything.

I try not to frown and have done so since my teens, because growing up in Italy, I was surrounded by people with terrible frownlines that started appearing from their teens, it was the done thing socially, culturally, etc. to frown in order to appear more expressive but it's never appealed to me. i also consciously avoided raising my eyebrows when I looked up, you don't need to! Just look up. So at 58 my forehead is virtually unlined. I also never smoked so I don't have lines around my mouth. Posture is also very important: shoulders back, hold your core in and stop looking down at your phone! Hold your head up and smile, you'll look younger and more attractive. Weight is ageing so don't resign to a middle-aged spread, eat more wholefoods (minus oils/oily dressings) to lose weight and keep it off without restricting yourself. For more info, the Physicians' Committee and Chef AJ's channel really helped me.

They look younger because they keep their youthful figure , they dress according to their age and which is classic. The best asset any woman can attain is a good straight posture. Straight shoulders will make any thing you wear look it’s best. And it’s free. The most costly beauty secret is beautiful white teeth. They don’t have to be perfectly straight just as white as possible.

It is hard to determine what the right combination of techniques or practices is for any particular individual. In my opinion, avoiding an animal-heavy diet, hydrating, exercising, using water and not soap on our skin, keeping our weight down are the keys to aging well. Dressing well is a help. As for Botox, I think that is a huge gamble, given the absence of longitudinal valid studies on its side effects when injected into the skin (especially so close to the brain, eyes, etc.) and I will not do it. Clean, healthy, slim, happy -- it all helps.

My late French mother wore little makeup-just some foundation and pink lipstick. Always lipstick. She never wore any kind of eye makeup. I’m 59 with very fair skin, so summertime as a kid was rough as I would get a sunburn and it hurt like hell! As I got older I avoided the sun as much as possible, this was before sunscreen. However, at 13 on a trip to Florida I got severely sunburned with blisters all over my face. My mother took me to a dermatologist and he told me about a new product called sunscreen and told me to use it every day even in winter. I swore I would and as a side note he told me it will avoid getting wrinkles as I got older. I am glad I listened to him!

I do believe that your base attractiveness is genetic. There are things that you could do to increase your attractiveness as stated before good grooming, good styling personality, etc. let’s face it. Not Everyone can look like a model, but we can always enhance physical traits.

Really interesting, thank you. Though foundation may make you look older as it can enhance wrinkles, it doesn’t cause you to look older as there's a barrier from the sun so there's some protection? Are French women over 50 smoking less as everytime I've been in Paris it still seems so popular? Spending so much effort on taking care of your skin and then smoke just seems wrong?

French women don't naturally look younger. But American women look younger than most european women of the same age. French women look slimmer over all, they are less voluptuous in general, at least until they are older. .Many times, they appear slimmer because of smoking. I got a Swedish bf and he loves plump women with curves, and a friend of mine from LA has quite wide hips and thick legs, and her German bf loves it, he says in Germany it's not so common for younger women to be curvaceous and full. Actually, how we feel is the most important thing. Accepting our shape and don't listen to bs about what's best, but living as we like. The French always love to think they are the best at everything. :) Je ne crois pas.

I suspect the main difference between Madge and that lady is a distinct lack of plastic surgery! I'm not French, although my great, great granny was, and my Nanna always used Nivea and soap and water. Unfortunately, I am allergic to soaps, even non-allergic ones! But what I do emulate is that I never leave the house without a spritz of perfume! French, of course! Hers was always Chanel no. 5. She was always dressed well, too, so genes will out!

50 it's still young, healthy woman. I don't know why women have obsession looking younger, especially when they still young, but for sure media play big role in this. For me great it's not be in 50 and looks 10 years younger but be in 70, 90 and looks 30 years younger, and have the same ability like 30 years before. Like Ernie Hudson or William Shatner. I still can't believe how they look like, looks like scam. But this is really great. Still have energy for go for shopping, for clean in home, be independent in old age, even go to the gym like Ernie or play in movie. I think it's much much much, milion percent more important than look like 40 in your 50.

By all means, have a feature surgically improved if it will make you more confident, just don’t chase the fountain of youth, it’s only a fairy story. I know women who are kicking themselves because they had so many procedures so young that they no longer look natural, but no more can be done. I’m considering having my genetic double-chin improved, it’s not related to my weight, I’m skinny, it’s just inherited and it’s always bothered me a bit. My relatives on that side, all skinny, looked like bullfrogs, so it could be worse! Major surgery and $25,000, that’s a huge thing. I just don’t know.

..."they don`t OVERdo botox" means that they DO it anyway! :)) But it can hardly be called a secret, 🤭 let alone a natural one. And here are mostly shown those women, who (almost) always actually HAD an opportunity to care for themselves and/or they were surrounded by people, who also cared for them! 😏 - a luxury, that not so many women have in this life, unfortunately. But it`s good that you`ve shown the importance of a kind psycological approach to aging, - especially for women, who`s always been feeling this immense pressure of society (of male shovinists, that is 🙊), that women should always look younger, as if it`s their obligation.😈 On the other hand, recent researches show, that we CAN actually stay healthier for a longer time, and if we learn it, we can be doing it for our own well-being and well-feeling, 😉 which we can share with others, too. 😊

Jesus wept! Because listen to how many times you say “younger” If I had a nickel for every time I could afford a full face lift. The point is that they don’t try to look “younger.” They use the proper word, they try to look “pretty” “beautiful” “attractive” NOT to look 20. So every time we trade the word attractive for the word “young” we are setting ourselves up to look ridiculous. Really want to look “young” try a onesie, a diaper and drive a stroller. If you want to look “gorgeous” however…now we’re talking. If the only thing that is good is “young” should we go all Logan’s Run and kill ourselves after our thirties? May as well because every day that you live makes “young” irrelevant. Gorgeous, however, is ALWAYS relevant. The right words lead to the right idea.

I think you have a lot of things in common with the Italians, but French women are way more independent. Here it's still a foreign concept. Plus the foundation thing is super true, I have almost never used foundation and I look 10 yrs younger...I love CC creams though. I'm now using SVR cc cream and it's amazing (previously Vichy, Roche Posay, Uriage). However, I own a foundation from Rilastil (Milano) and it's super good also. Unfortunately in Italy a lot of youngsters want to emulate the US and they are acting up, forgetting how our own style and beauty has always been praised across the globe.

Most of my fellow American mature women just do too much to look younger, it doesn’t work. Too much: cosmetic surgery and procedures; heavy, contoured makeup; thick, black false eyelashes; over-plucked and re-drawn brows; big, bleached-blond, curly hair and overly sexy, tight and teenager-style clothes. French women embrace their natural beauty more, they don’t look too try-hard. Keeping healthy, slender and fit and protecting your skin from the sun are the most important things to do to age beautifully. It’s not too late to start saving your skin with sunscreen, nor is it ever too early. I start wearing sunscreen in my early 20s, when it first became available and at age 64, I get compliments on my “youthful skin” all the time (before that there was only zinc oxide, gives a thick, opaque, white mask, but I used to mix this with foundation, it was better than nothing). Most Americans are very inactive and have very poor diets and so are fat and unhealthy, this, too, can and should be prevented.

Diet and exercise are key. I don't drink alcohol. I don't look 20 years younger. It's not my goal. 5-10 years...yes. I dress classic preppy. Not many of my friends put the effort in. I find French women, especially Parisian women to be much more appearance conscious than say American, British, German, Dutch, and Scandinavian women. They like to give off this image of looking natural, effortless, practical yet elegant and chic for that classic and timeless look, but I find them often very contradictory and judgmental. They tend to be very appearance focused like Italian, Russian, Korean, Chinese, and Lebanese women. Who cares if you are a bit chubby, love excessive makeup, big hair, bold colors, etc. Do whatever makes you happy. What really shines through your style is your personality and energy you give off. Look at Dolly Parton, for example. A wrecked mess visually, but such a charming and darling woman, that who can't help fall in love with that effervescent energy.

You should say "celebrities and rich French women". In Paris, you cannot only see posh women shopping in le Bon marché, there are also "real" women having "real" jobs. Do you ever take the RER at peak time? I can see all the exhausted people who age like they can. I doubt they are going to the hairdresser each week and have subtle fillers and botox injections. It is so superficial that kind of videos. Madonna is one of the biggest celebrity in the world. Everybody knows Madonna. She always had a big ego. Of course her response to aging will be over the top.

Any woman, who tries to grow inside her a kinder approach to herself and others, who ALLOWs herself to live and let live, and to enjoy little (or not so little) things in life, that lift our spirits and recharge our batteries, - that any woman can live a life with LESS stress, anxiety, worry etc., therefore, - she can stay healthier for a longer period of time OR she can even bring her lost health BACK with the help of this approach (among other things, like some enegy practices, zigun, appropriate physical activity etc.). And for a woman, health and beauty are practically synonyms. But too many of unnecessary rules (or obsession with ANY kind of rules) can be even more stressing, than hussle-bustle of our everyday life. Therefore, girlies, stop f*cking your brain and other people`s brain, too! 😂 - you gonna live in a much lighter and healthier life with this approach.

I'm not sure 100% of this is good advice. While I agree with the majority, I differ in two places. Firstly, skincare for the over 50s isn't always a good idea for much younger women as it's formulated for skin which is losing hydration and collagen, so it is more rich. That could be pore-clogging for younger women who may have naturally oilier skin. Secondly, keeping a hairstyle from your 20/30s into your 50s may not be the most flattering. Hair gets drier too and face shape changes as you age. It's a question of re-appraising your hair from time to time. However, a good diet and gentle exercise will always be key, as will a good skincare routine, daily SPF, minimising stress where possible and prioritising sleep. The occasional bit of gentle botox administered by a competent practitioner, if you so wish, will be the cherry on top. But there's another difference, and I say this having lived in France - most French women celebrate age. They are not ashamed of it; they see aging as a privilege and French men don't automatically stop finding women sexy as they age. They carry their heads high. There's a big lesson in there too.
