I always like the fact that when you use OCF, you still make it look natural and you don’t use flat lighting that some of these dudes do with OCF. Nothing worse than pie faces and low contrast 💪🏽

I find the best way to combine flash and direct sunlight is to keep the sun behind the subject as back-rim light and then use two lights in front in a key over centered fill configuration just as done with Fill, Key and Back light in a three flash indoor studio session. When switching to digital in 2000 I started using white and black wash cloths draped over a gray card (WB reference) to create a 3D target for setting lights so my often impatient in-house model didn’t need to stand around while I fiddled with the lights and camera. The terry fabric will create lots of specular highlights like hair and skin does which are critical to retain with highlight exposure for 3D modeling in the highlights. Start with flash sync speed / ISO/ aperture so the edges of the white towel the sun hits are 1/3 stop below clipping. The front of the target will be very underexposed. Next place Fill Flash on behind the camera on the camera axis about 7-8 high to match the angle of the skylight fill. Raise power until detail is seen in the black towel and the spike it creates on the histogram in a close up of the target is not running off the left side. The white towel will still be underexposed. Finally position the key light. If the goal is to seamlessly match the ambient light you’ll need to determine the dominant direction of the skylight by looking at the highlight shadow pattern on the draped white towel. This is when I’ll have the subject come so I can be sure they look up enough to get the skylight past the brow and into the eyes, turning face to the dominant direction to highlight the front of the face then placing the key light so it hit on the same angle creating the same pattern but with more contrast. Power level is set to keep the highlights it creates slightly darker than those created by it on the towel. The key light winds up about 1/3 under the sunny whites, 2/3 under clipping. The advantage of this over a single flash approach outdoors is never needing to worry about how sun hits the face of the subject (because you never let it) and having total control over over tonal range and detail in the front, just as in a studio. The reason for keeping the fill centered on the camera axis is simple-whenever fill is placed off-axis it will create unfilled shadows the camera sees. On axis and above it still creates shadows but the camera does see most of them and those it does see match the pattern of downward shadows seen outdoors in ambient light.
