I’m sticking with C1 as someone who loved Photoshop but never used LR (used Apple Aperture) I migrated to Affinity years ago and chose C1 last year for the catalog and organizational capabilities. I’m not a pro photographer just an enthusiast that shoots Fujifilm, so for me C1 made sense.

Hi: Thanks for creating and sharing this video. I was previously a LrC user but I migrated over to C1 last summer. I shoot on an Sony A7Riv and I find that C1 simply renders the RAW images better. Think that fact the C1 does a much better job on properly matching the Camera/Lens profiles to the image vs. LrC's awkward process of having to download individual Camera RAW profiles. Cheers, Keith

I’ve been using C1 since 2016. I chose it because it was the closest in ease of use to Apple’s Aperture. The colour control and RAW translations are second to none. Even with the odd niggle, I could never consider any other software. My partner uses Lightroom and I do shake my head at what’s missing. Having said that, I believe we should all use the tools that work for us. If LR works better for your work, that’s awesome. Again, nicely scripted and presented Dunna. I’ve used your videos to help me create my own on my new channel. 🙏

@SwanSycorax

I have both packages but switched my main editing to Capture One in December 2020. Periodically I carry out some back to back edits using the same RAW files. For me, the results i get from Capture One are always better with more pleasing and natural renders than I get from LR and, at the end of the day, it is all about the quality of the final image, not necessarily how you get there.
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing! I agree that the final result is super important. I found I get really great results with both programs so then HOW I get there makes a big difference for me, my time management and what I'm able to do. Do you ever run into the issue with capture one where the "fit to window" preview is slightly blurry? That drove me nuts... as soon as I zoom in a bit, it's fine, but that fit to window preview made things look like they were out of focus.
@SwanSycorax
@SwanSycorax 7 месяцев назад
@@dunnadidit No, I haven't had that issue. I run a twin screen system based on an Apple M1 processor MacBook Pro with 64GB RAM and a 4TB internal SSD with a 27" additional display. In C1 I edit on the 27" display and have the catalogue open on the MacBook screen. Performance is superb. For me one of the biggest benefits of Capture One is the speed at which Collections work and the multi-layered keywords. My image library is in a single catalogue with almost every image sorted via the collections and keywords so that I can find what I want very quickly righty across the database. I used to do a similar thing in Lightroom but I found the collections to be really slow. I am really pleased with the most recent updates to Capture One but essentially, it is the renders the software gives me that are better than I get from LR and that image quality is the ultimate deciding factor.

Skin tones and generally the way the photo comes out of camera seems way better in capture one. I was actually shocked by how much better it looks right out of camera. Seems like now seeing this that I guess lightroom converts the photo format to something other then raw and it affects the image.

I'm a bit confused about the comments regarding C1 Styles vs LR Presets. The workflow is nearly identical, expect C1 gives you the additional capability to apply it as a layer with its own opacity and ability to edit further. But if you want to apply a style directly to a layer or your background image, you just click on it exactly like you would in LR. I do agree about the UI of LR, though. It's a lot easier to use than C1. I'm torn. I like features of both and I really need to pick one. Like you, I *really* miss the skin tone cool from C1 when I'm using LR. And I also miss the layers. However, all that capability is a two-edged sword for me. In C1, I tend to over-edit my photos because it's so incredibly easy to do it. I sometimes end up losing depth to my photos in a way that's hard to describe. It just ends up looking flattened somehow and my only guess is that it's due to over processing and messing up contrast or something. I do this much less often if I stick to LR. In both cases, I still also need to make a round trip through Photoshop anyway. I seriously need to just pick one and streamline my workflow.
@misterfister6096
@misterfister6096 7 месяцев назад
Number one reason not to go back to lightroom: LR catalog system. Working with file based sessions is just the better and more logical way for me. Easy to do backups, no bloated database is one of the main reasons to use C1 over LR. And, as mentioned in the video, for a portrait photographer at least, the color editor with skin tone editor has just become an essetial tool. Also C1 AI masking is much superior to LR and works better for me. Btw in the latest version you can copy AI masks for Background and Subject isolation :)
@mikrusa
@mikrusa 6 месяцев назад
Lightroom, in my opinion, has a big deficiency. Huge. The shortcut keys for editing photos. With LR I am forced to use the mouse to change exposure, contrast, shadows... blah blah blah! With C1 they can vary every parameter from the keyboard without ever using the mouse. This is worth much more to me than Ai masks which I rarely use. The editing speed is 100 times faster than LR for me, for the way I work. LR presets are missing in C1, but using Fujifilm I love the film simulations which work better on C1, raw files are also processed much better. I created my own styles and that's okay.

For me the massive LR catalog is still a deal killer. The portability of C1 Sessions makes working as a traveling photographer so much easier. Add to that the advantages of managing storage and cloud synchronization with smaller logical units of work (Sessions) and I decided about 6 months ago to stay with C1. But I agree with the functional advantages you pointed out for LRCC. I also don’t trust Adobe to keep LRC. I think they will push us all to cloud based.

subject and background mask syncs and are re calculated on to different images in C1 It's just the custom made ai mask that don't. Calibration tools looks the same as the 3 way color adjustment? But in generally I aggre with you on presets and that LR is slightly bether, probably since more people are using it. But also because C1 use different color science for difrrent cameras. For auto generated masking. Ease of use is highly subjective everything you just said could be said of capture one. I used Capture one when LR was not even created by Adobe and in the beginning it was not great and you couldn't teather with it. It didn't fit well for a comersial workflow. Personally I do everything to work less with Adobe. My last tool to get rid of is photoshop.. That's a hard one though since I to alit of retouch gigs.

having used Lightroom since v1 and moved to capture one end of last year. Capture one finally puts the enjoyment back into photo editing. Lightroom just became slow and cumbersome to use. Once I’d learnt Capture one shortcuts I was flying. It’s helped by having a great support and community. I contacted them at first on a few issues and had respondes from the dev in a few hours who actually knew what he was talking about and wasn’t an automated response . Imagine that from Adobe, being helpful. Doesn’t happen.

Great video! Really resonate with all your points. Personally, I started my photography journey with LR. 1 year down the line, I decided to move to C1, learned everything about color manipulation in and went back to LR 3 years later haha, which I stuck with till now. C1 is definitely more refined as the sliders rarely overlap with each other and you can do fine tunings a lot easier than in LR but also, requires you to use a lot of the tools to get the 'perfect' result. Whereas LR tools are more bold and you can finish a pretty good edit within minutes. I can see why some pros that rely on that 1 photo being perfect (billboard, magazine photographers) prefer C1 but for a hobbyist editing 20-30 pics a trip it's wayyy overkill and time-consuming. Though, I especially miss the level tools.

If only Adobe would improve the performance of Lightroom Classic in the library mode, I'd feel less irritated about continuing to pay them money. Why on earth it still uses the CPU for thumbnail generation when it uses the GPU for photo export I have no damn clue and it's immensely annoying. I also had to upgrade to 128GB of RAM so I could run Lightroom Classic at the same time as Davinci Resolve because LR uses roughly 45GB of RAM on my machine 😐 Still the least painful library management/editing software though, soooooo

On a per image basis, LR masking is pretty good. However, if you try and batch apply masks(like with presets), even to images that don't change compared to each other, there's a high failure rate in LR that it doesn't make it usable.

First point you can absolutely do in C1. Second one is definitely an area that C1 needs to catch up on it only understands subject and background. However the number of times I have to adjust the mask makes this a moot point FOR ME (I saw it on your video 1:41 the subject masking did something weird under your right foot!). Intersecting masks and being able to cut one mask from another would be so cool! On point 2 as I said I just don't trust any of the masks to do it right and as nice as it might be to copy past adjustments (C1 is going there too) BTW not true that C1 will paste over your previous mask - for subject and Background it recalculates them but not reliably matching my expectations. AI noise would be great built-in. I use DXO but C1 is horribly clunky with using external software and DXO massively expands the files due to de-mozaicing. I am hugely jealous of the calibration tools. Presets.... I have so many for various programs, like the idea BUT I find I never use them. Ease of use - I did a trial of Adobe software and after 30 minutes I had uninstalled it just doesn't work the way I do - as you say it is a subjective thing. Photoshop thing trickling down - I get this. especially content aware fill etc anything that keeps me away from PS is a good thing that software is so unintuitive for me. Sessions & catalogs - nice to hear someone gets the differentiation! At the end of the day I'm sure they are both great tools and it is a matter of taste as to how well one fits your workflow (and how flexible you are about your workflow). I applaud your ability to go back and forth - as I said I tried Photoshop (I was a regular user until they switched to subscription and never would have changed until they switched their licencing model) having tried C1 I find I can do edits so fast I just find it hard to switch back. Great video.

As for cutting one mask out of another in C1, you can sort of replicate this feature by copying mask from one layer to another and inverting it. For example you create a subject mask and you adjust it and then you copy it to another layer and invert it to get your background mask

I have done mostly the same as you. I have used capture one for many years. Lately I switch back to Lightroom cloud and I upload my best photos to the cloud and use the local pretty much as you use a session in Capture one. I am very happy with my workflow now. Lightroom is much faster to use and the masks is better and more precise.

Synchronicity. I am in the middle of a similar transition. I started using C1 two years ago, and loved your videos on it. And now I'm leaning back toward Bridge/ACR/LrC. I just wish LrC/ACR would add a feature like the Refine Mask… tool in C1. I also wish I could make a giant curves tool like I can in C1. But all roads are leading me back into the Adobe world.

I work with both and agree auto masking in LR is better. However, I just can’t leave speed editing capability that C1 offers. This means I actually edit photos almost entirely using mouse/keyboard (without moving and following the mouse-if you know, you know ;) )

The one thing I absolutely love about Capture One is the iPad app. It streamlined my workflow SOOOO much. I import directly from camera and do my culling before uploading photos to the mac. Sometimes, if in a hurry and don't need nothing advanced (which is most of the time, since I'm not a professional), I do all the corrections there too.

i switched 4 years ago to capture one, mostly because of speed. the responsiveness of the app, but then also getting my desired results way faster than with lightroom. In Lightroom i just needed so much more time. Capture one is lightening fast, and then has such great things like its speed editing. that alone makes it a game changer. i just tried lightroom a week ago again and was shocked about its sluggishness. the only thing faster in lightroom, is filtering and going through photos in the catalog. there C1 really needs improving.

I need Photoshop to really mutilate my images, and for amateur use I see no justification for the price of Capture One. It's not an alternative, for me, it's additional software. I wondered about its tethering capabilities, it supports none of my current cameras, so I have to use the camera vendor software for tethering. I've been using Br the past few months, it offers some of the facilities if sessions in that I can make specific directories for stuff, which I tend not to do, and move stuff around willy nilly which I tend to do a lot.

As much as I liked the capabilities of Capture One's color grading tools, I did notice the exact same thing right away regarding adjustments of highlights / shadows and selective colors. Lightroom just seems to affect the expected range and offer a wider degree of adjustments, while in Capture One, I sometimes feel that I need to go for a more complex masking, and the maximum amount of the adjustments is not enough for my needs... For example, before switching to Capture One a few years ago, I typically darked down the blues in Lightroom to reveal the sky texture and make it less overexposed. In Capture One, I couldn't achieve the same effect as easily.

Initially, I was impressed by the features of Capture One. However, even on my high-end Windows PC I got too many crashes and freezes. This was about a year ago. At the time, I don't believe Capture One was keeping up with the top end graphics cards. I dumped them, in favor of Lightroom.

Apologies in advance for a lengthy post, but others may find this useful. I have been searching for precisely this kind of commentary from people who are used to both LR and C1. So I appreciate this video - thank you for publishing this. Having used LR since version 2.x, five years ago I switched to Capture One. Much has improved in C1 over the years, but I have been looking for reasons to switch back to LR for 3-4 important reasons. First, even using C1, I can't be completely stop using Photoshop, and if anything, over the past couple of years, my use of PS has gone up. And as you pointed out, many PS features, especially masking, AI denoise, etc. have been trickling down to LR. LR makes it more harmonious between my PS and LR usage, and Adobe, which is a 100x bigger company and a technological powerhouse, and I'd rather be on the Adobe technology roadmap than C1. Second, in part related to resources, C1 is always behind LR in supporting lens profiles, sometimes by YEARS. I use many lenses that I can't find profiles for in C1. LR is not 100%, but far more extensive than C1. Third, as you say, there are more creature comforts in the LR that make it easier to use. And last but not the least, in order to use PS, I have to subscribe to it, and the basic $120/year sub also includes LR. In contrast, with its price increases a little over a year ago, a C1 subscription now costs $180/year, which is very hefty in terms of value. In essence, I already have LR since I subscribe to PS, so C1 is an completely additional $180/year overhead. So I have been looking for reasons to bail out of C1 and go back to LR. My biggest problem with LR is file management. I exclusively use sessions in C1, never catalogues. So all my raw files, including Extended NR versions and TIF files from Photoshop, are all in folders, each folder has its Capture / Output / Select / Reject folders, and I can always see the files. My sessions are always named "YY-MMDD Subject", which therefore become folder names. My files are always named "YY-MMDD Subject-#### (Camera, Lens)". [I use multiple cameras and lenses.] So file management, search, archival and back ups are all hugely simplified and robust. I cannot do this simple thing with LR. I have tried creating a multitude of catalogs in LR that correspond to my sessions in C1, and I have tried to create an LR-version of my C1 set up. BUT... I have no idea where LR keeps my raw files after an import. I see the thumbnails but on many photos, when I click to process them, I get a sinister "The file could not be found" message. That is very scary to me. I can't entrust my files and many hours of editing to a program that suddenly throws up its hand and says it has no idea where my photos are. That is a disaster. So if there's some light you can shed on how to essentially create a C1-Sessions environment with LR (Classic), and precisely know and see where all the raw files are, that would be most helpful. I'm sure a lot of other C1 users would be interested in it, if you could create a video on this. Thanks in advance and cheers, Roy

I know you said that the ease of using presets in Lightroom was better but I'm curious, can you import lightroom presets into Capture One? Is it just more steps or impossible all together? I'm tired of pirating Lightroom but I've bought SO many presets over the years, I dont want to start from scratch. Even if that be the case, does capture one even have preset libraries?

Just last year when my Adobe license expired I investigated a lot of available alternatives, free and paid, including C1, DXO, and Luminar. The funny thing the best alternative is Darktable, which is free. But none of the alternatives are nearly as good as LR. I can finish editing 1000 raw files from a shoot in an hour in LR, all the other software is a huge waste of time, not even mentioning lack of functionality and cumbersome interfaces.

Great info. I am in my first trial period of C1 and I'm trying to decide if it will work for me. For main portrait work, I think my workflow in LR to PS works well and I'm too old to learn new tricks. :) BUT... I got Capture One specifically for tethering, and I love how much easier it is. In my opinion, LR could step that up a bit and we'd be a lot happier. To each his own...

CO just works x10 faster on my machine (ryzen 9, rtx 3080, 32gb RAM), also speed edit is a killer feature in CO, initial colors are better in CO for Sony cameras. Lightroom has better AI functionality but it's just unusable when you need to quickly edit 1000 vacation photos 😅

I would be interested to see if the statement about C1 having better raw processing and colors vs Adobe Suite. It had been the (subjective) statement (although never scienctifically tested) by every YTber back in the day. I wonder if this statement holds true today? Adobe has come along way and I'd be surprised if C1 is really that much further ahead in this area. I've been on C1 for the last 3 years and thinking about cancelling it. They moved from a perpetual license to subscription and now trying to move you to their "all-in-one" subscription. TBH, it's getting really annoying and they are constantly jacking the prices up. Lastly, their software updates require you to download the full version and reinstall it every time. Why can't they do a normal update...

Great video. I go back and forth, but to me Capture One's raw processing is unparalleled, even better than PhotoLab 7. Their auto adjustments feature is pretty amazing as well, and I like how I can customize the workspace to my heart's content....which is hard to do in LR.

Started with darktable as it is free and cross platform capable (I have a Linux Desktop that was my primary daily driver). Now that I have a Macbook Pro, and also for a lot of the reasons you specified in the video I'm starting to become more tempted to jump over to Lightroom CC. darktable is powerful but I think I'm kind of hitting my max attention span on a lot of my edits now (I'm finding myself not really needing to edit so much in my latest shots, so its actually more straight forward for me to switch to Lightroom in terms of a workflow process). The tools are stupidly powerful in darktable which has been why I've stayed with it for so long but I'm also the type of person that also needs to switch up every once and awhile.

Definitely presets and sync-ed editing is a time saver. One important thing though is missing in LR. When you need to adjust WB you have to do it individually with every image. LR can only assign the same temperature/tint to selection, but it doesn't allow to proportionally warm up or cool down multiple images.

Generative fill isn't coming to Lightroom. As convenient as it would be they are two very different apps with two separate goals. If your photo is a house, Lightroom is painting/styling and Photoshop is renovations. Generative fill can completely change the contents of your image and so it'll stay a Photoshop feature.

I have worked in lightroom for over 14 years and for two years I have been working in capture one, which I think is better for color grading, the recoveries on highlighs are much better on capture one and in general it gives a different look to the pictures compared to lightroom. I still try to edit the same photos in lightroom and capture one, and although in lightroom I have a lot of presets, I still end up editing the photos in capture one, because I like the colors more, I like the skin editing options, the recoveries on highlights and shadows are better. For selections, layers, more complex work that requires professional editing, I use photoshop in the end.

I use CaptureOne Pro for the tethering capabilities, skin tone tool, layers feels more like photoshop and honestly, the colour is so much better coming out of Capture than Lightroom. I like to work in sessions, it just makes more sense to me. I don't care about denoise, and any retouching I do is done is photoshop. The only thing that I don't like about CaptureOne is that it is very expensive, that is where Adobe has a huge advantage

Make a whole Walkthrough of you editing 2 or 3 different Photos to show your workflow with Lightroom. That would be interesting to see I think. Not seeing a Guide on how to do this and that, but your actual thoughts on what you think about doing and how you get there, you know? You won't get eveything perfect the first time. Would be nice to see how you deal with adjusting everything as you and the whole process. And what tools you use, how you use them, with out going into too much detail about the inner workings of that tool. I just got Lightroom literally a few days ago after using a freeware called "RawTherapee" for a few years. I feel comfortable in Lightroom immediatly, but I bet there a features and workflow optimisations I just do not know about yet. Maybe I could learn a bit from you if you decide to make a Video like that :)
