Glad you have a video diary. Back in the early 90's, I bought a reman engine. Put it in and it ran like crap. Turns out the didn't put head gaskets on either side. It took 6 months to get half my money back. I was done with remans then and forever. Good luck.

Man oh man,,,, I’d like to say this is a first for Deere, but we had a motor come apart in a brand new cotton stripper, it was under warranty. They put a reman in it, same thing, cam gear came off. We were in the middle of harvest. I’ll give Deere credit, they made it right with us. Sent out a brand new machine until ours was fixed, both times. Which ours was new. Didn’t charge us a dime and took care of us the entire time. They put a new engine in it the second time, not a reman. We traded the POS as soon as harvest was done.

Several thngs come to mind.First one was way back in 1958.We put a so called reman engine in a Army tank,real bear to work on.ren about twenty minutes then fried it's self.Several other stories I could tell,but will only mention one more.Friend of mine put REMAN engine in a forklift.Engine had no oil pressure,after a while he found the problem,during cleaning process an allen plug in a oil passage had to be removed.It was never reinstalled,engine was reassembled paper work showed proper tests were done.Paperwork was pencil whipped.

@@richardlincoln8438 - true, however the reman specifications are developed by JD engineers, including QA/QC requirements all in the contract. At least that’s how it should be. The reman contractor may be a major operation not just for JD motors, so it’s possible they have their own internal specifications. And in this particular case, they probably just take it back and send another to JD. It may also be possible though they agree to reimburse an experienced mechanic like Warren to do the rebuild - but then the warranty is by Warren.

Wow. As a retired John Deere heavy equipment mechanic (41 years), I’ve never seen a failure like that. I preferred to do my engine rebuilds. The problem was that we couldn’t compete with difference in price between in house rebuilds vs reman prices. Before remans came along I would do about 6 to 8 complete rebuilds a year. I really missed doing the rebuilds. The Deere V 8 diesel was always an interesting experience.

Im a Field mechanic in The gas compression world up here in Ab canada. Years ago we swapping out a Waukesha H-24. Its a inline 8 cylinder 24L displacement natural gas engine. (A POS by all accounts lol) Anyway, its in a building, driving a screw compressor, so we unhook it, a crew comes in to pull off the roof, we swing it out. Swing in a Reman unit, the crew reassembled the roof, do the alignment, get it all ready to run. As soon as we cranked it, it knocked bad. Turned out someone left a large tek screw inside one of the cylinders and smashed up the piston. We had not pulled the spark bolts out of it, so it came like that from the rebuild shop. So, off comes the roof and start all over again. Ahhh good times. It could normally be rebuilt in place, and just change that one hole out, but the customer said nope. Put a new one in. So we did.

First is how you treat other people; you give your “all” in the work you perform for your customers and help anyone else along the way that you can. You are not crazy Warren. 1988 was the last time I used a reman engine in anything. There use to be a couple of good good engine rebuilders in Spokane who warranteed their work, but that was 35 years ago. This is an absolute disaster for Deere, they owe this man a new machine without question. Three engines and this one didn't even make it into the field. When it first shut off I thought maybe the fuel shut-off solenoid failed or came unplugged, but a broken cam will definitely shut off the fuel pump. So much for just plugging a wire back in. What a nightmare for this owner. On the other hand I know a fantastic mechanic that will fix this whole mess the right way! Hey Warren, from now on, you need to charge a reassembly fee for all reman engines. When they what the fee is for, show em this video. At least you get paid either way. How frustrating to work so hard and have something like this happen.😫 Take a couple shots of Crown, give your wife a big ole hug and kiss, and tell her Happy Mother's Day. When working for Cat, Terex, Joy, Northwest, Clark dealers, I can't recall how many times I was in the middle of assembling an engine, trans, hydraulics, and the "boss" would come up with phone call for me to take (cause they didn't really know much to help caller). It's soooo easy to make mistakes because of distractions. I remember a truck mechanic (Good mechanic) was handed a phone call from customer just as he was getting ready to tighten the oil drain. (Cat 3406E) You guessed it. The plug came out on I5 north of Seattle. That little fiasco cost our company 25, 000.00 + That was 20+ years ago.
@TyphoonVstrom
@TyphoonVstrom 3 года назад
The big difference is these reman companies do just one thing- reman engines, and the people on the lines don't take phone calls. Plus, they should have a proper QA process set up which catches critical phases of assembly. I bet the reman shop and JD both claim to manufcture to ISO standards, which means they must have a QA system in place and be regularly audited on it. They both need to be audited, something is very wrong for this to happen.

First one they had ran a bolt in for a lift bracket in the intake runner on the head and used too long of a bolt and bent a push rod. So they sent it back. Next one wouldn't build oil pressure after it was started. If you remember the 80s areostars you know what a pain they were to change the engine in. Third engine finally worked. And the test drive....all captured to video. And that fail? Wow. That is a ton of expensive time....a lot of parts and back to a reman number 2 delivered? Adding up to a customer...with needs to seeding, tillage. Harvest committed end use. (delay). Schedule to jobs. All back to the beginning or worse...as tow to the shop and all...out in the sun (or rain). Well...sharpen a pen and document the hours...the cost of failure. Show the video record to owner. A tech is demanded to take all in stride. Every component and every day is about delivery of skill. Delivery of excellence is what makes the product and service. I am amazed you managed to capture this new component failure as it happened. How curious for that delivered unit to be as junk. M.

I work in the service department at a car dealership and we regularly sell reman engines and they are covered by a parts and labor warranty. The labor part of the warranty means that if something like this happens the service department would have to diagnose what went wrong and repair it even if we did not do the installation, we would then be paid the warranty labor times by. the manufacturer through the normal warranty reimbursement procedure. We sell reman engines they put in fedex trucks and sometimes things happen and we have to get involved to do the repair or complete replacement but we do get paid.

like it's cursed, right? Crazy after all the time and effort & it's some goon missing a couple of seconds with a torque wrench or a 1 buck bolt that brings the whole shooting match down... Hate seeing brand spanking new parts all snapped and ruined like that head, all for what?

Long ago in the tech college here the final project was a diesel in a boat. Well to get to this thing you had to torch a hole in the side of the steel hull and pull it out with a forklift. They rebuilt it and put it back in welded up the hole and went to start it and they left out the RODS/MAINS.

As a tech at a dealer for another major equipment oem, I can say without a doubt that isn't just a deere reman problem. Use our "certified quaility reman" parts the manufacturers say, it will be cheaper they say..... just gets so frustrating putting major components in customers equipment that you can't have any confidence in anymore.

I feel for you !!!! I am damn glad you have all this on a video, kind of hard to prove this was a screw up on your part, JD should pay 100% on this !!!!! At least you can show the owner !!! What a shame.

Remanufactured Engines need to meet a higher standard of quality control on the work done ressambling these reman engines. It's really starting to become a disposal society with engines now a days. I've always stood by any engine that I've rebuilt! I take pride in my quality of workmanship! !

All your hard work putting the engine back in, what a waste of effort, everyone is a loser when you have shoddy reconditioned engines supplied "as new" I bet the owner is upset, I am surprised how calm you were, great channel, like your work, don't let it get to you.

Yes quality parts, and most of all a quality man like yourself to put it pack together right, is the best solution. hope the reman co picks up the tab and compensates you for your work

You need to have this video available for every customer that wants to "just buy a reman and swing it in" instead of letting you build it right. Now, there will be time to do it twice, instead of doing it right the first time.

Please let there be a part two. You had me hooked hard at. She just shut down. Then broken parts on the top side of motor. On the f@##@! Side of the road. The wrench throwing contest would have hit a new world record.

Keep up the good work Warren. I always joke how I'm going to rename my farm black cloud acres. Like you have said these remans are done as cheap as can be done. The problem is the companies really don't care because they run them with numbers counters to give the best return to the stockholders. Ma deere is great at stealing ideas from other companies and claiming there's is better too. They have had a horrible time trying to develop motors to meet emissions standards, but the loyalty of their customers is unreal and they keep hanging on until deere gets it right. The only good tractor motors in high horse power they built in my opinion had cummins in them. I am biased though.

Sorry Warren, been there done that, had a reman compressor I spent all day replacing only to come apart later that day after the guy paid the bill. Totally just makes you sick and not want to even work on it anymore. So there I was the next day doing it all over and having to flush the system out.

This tractor is jinxed Warren. I felt for you so much after all those hours sweated on that thing. I didn't realise John Deere was such a joke of a company. When your new trainee arrives, I would use this tractor to initiate him and find out if he's any good. You know he might want to take over the social media side and leave you with the dirty end. Good luck with this Sir.
