This is why "L.A. at Last" Was the Best Hollywood Episode on I Love Lucy--S4E17
I would easily argue that this is the episode "LA at LAST" is the best I Love Lucy where the gang is in Hollywood. Many fans would agree as well seeing Eve Arden, William Holden, Ricky and Lucy Ricardo along with Ethel and Fred Mertz. Would you agree or disagree with this? I'd LOVE to know your thoughts! Which episodes would you like to see me review in the future?

Bill Holden was a natural for light comedy (Sabrina etc.) and this was a real delight for him and totally in character.

I just love the fact that Lucy is in her own right a huge star herself, but plays the role of a star struck fan to perfection. She become one of us, thats why we loved her so!

Also Lucie was in movies with Van Johnson (3x) , Bill Holden (1x) , Henry (2x) also she lived in the same neighborhood as Clark Gable, Carol Lombard, Jack Benny etc they were fiends and would stop over regularly.

SOO many funny moments in this episode. Cool to see William Holden turn the tables on Lucy and stare at her in the restaurant, only to take a pie to the face. Lucy`s fake nose getting lit on fire is PRICELESS. Mom passed through the room once when this episode was on TV , and I remember her saying how hilarious that was when she first saw it. My parents are a bit older, so they would have been kids was when it was originally airing in the 50`s. I agree with you about Desi`s facial expressions in that scene too. Just makes it funnier.

I’m always surprised by how the waiter just takes off like a bat out of hell when the pie goes into William Holden’s face. You would think his first concern would be to apologize and fuss over him!

This is one of my favorite episodes of I Love Lucy. Seeing William Holden being funny and having a pie in his face in the restaurant scene is hilarious and also seeing Ricky in his armor is also a hilarious moment in the episode. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see him in the armor more in the Hollywood episodes. I also love the John Wayne episode. Thank you for talking about this episode Rick. It is a very good video.

I agree. The expression on Ricky's face is priceless. For him as an actor to know what was coming ahead of time and still have that look of shock and surprise on his face shows what a talent Desi Arnaz was.

It makes even more sense that Holden would do this episode when I read what good friends Lucy and Desi were with Bill and Brenda Holden for many years before this. Brenda Holden was also in the fashion show episode.

I can’t imagine that I missed this video but I may have. Or I may have already commented. Who knows. I am just thrilled to see this tonight after a long day of work. This episode is iconic! One of my favorite lines is when Lucy is trying to get out of meeting William Holden and says “He just doesn’t send me” or something to that effect! Of course we know she’s lying. And also, when Bill Holden turns around and sees how the shape of her nose has changed, the look on his face is priceless! It reminds me of her face after her first swig of Vitametavegamin! Great acting! All around this episode is one of the best. I thought they stayed at The Beverly Palms Hotel or was that what they called it? I heard The Beverly Carlton mentioned. Thanks Rick! Great video!

I love how you deconstruct this episode and highlight the comedy scenes all throughout. I agree this was definitely the best episode of the Hollywood episodes. I love how you point out that there wasn't a build-up to the fake nose scene that it's a joy ride all throughout the entire episode. William Holden was the perfect straight man for Lucy's stunts. I know the first time I came to California I was definitely Starstruck myself and couldn't wait to see a movie star. It really does capture the excitement of being in Hollywood for the first time. Would definitely love to see more of these episodes deconstructed like this. I think it would be fun to do the John Wayne episode because that was also funny all the way through. Thanks Rick and have a great day. P.S. the first celebrity I saw in Hollywood was J.J. Walker (dynamite!). But right after that we saw Gene Kelly..like Lucy says, I thought we hit a whole nest of them. 😃

Lucy was in three movies with Van Johnson: Too Many Girls, Easy to Wed, then later years in Yours, Mine and Ours (1968 ). Also Van Johnson was a frequent guest at their ranch where they lived in CA. Also, Lucy starred with Bill Holden in Miss Grant Takes Richmond (1949). It is wonderful to see how excited Lucy acts when she first meets these "two big stars"(considering she was in movies with both) and here 70 years later after I Love Lucy first appeared, we are still watching it, and she is still unbelievably loved and respected.

This sounds weird, but when it comes to the Hollywood storyline, I prefer the episodes prior to getting to Hollywood to the actual Hollywood episodes. This includes Ricky's screen test, waiting to hear from Hollywood, preparing to go, and the trip to Hollywood. That's not to say I don't like the Hollywood episodes, but they are a little bittersweet in that the show changed from then on with more emphasis on cameos and travelling to different places and what-not.

Lucy's interactions with all the stars in the LA episodes were hilarious, but this episode with William Holden certainly was the best. I loved Ricky's reactions in the background 😂. @LJ-ht4zs

Unfortunately when I was in High School we had a bag pipe band with the Scottish lassies doing the cross swords dance. I know that Lucy really could dance and if she practiced enough she would have gotten this right. She didn't and I was disappointed. (I think she's part Scottish as I am - and the dance is so fun to watch esp when the music speeds up.) However it was not done in that speeded up fashion which makes it simpler, and she could have easily not hit the sword with her feet - surprised. Actually had she studied it and done it well think it would have added a lot to the scene.

Love this one, Rick! This has to be one of the funniest of the Hollywood series and in the entire ILL series. I like the Brown Derby scene from start to hilarious finish, besides the now famous "putty nose" scene between Lucy and Bill Holden, with Desi looking on, completely stunned. I think the two parter about John Wayne's cement footprints from Grauman's Chinese Theater is just as funny, if not a very close second. That's a classic, also, and you might want to do a video on those two episodes, with Wayne himself making an appearance in part 2. Unfortunate, the Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood, on Vine between Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd is long gone. In it's place now is a huge luxury apartment building. An exact replica of the Hollywood Brown Derby is at Disney World in Florida. Also, Lucy and Bill Holden were in a movie together, "Miss Grant Takes Richmond" released in 1949, so the two knew each other and acted together before this classic episode. Stay Positive and Be Hopeful, folks!

Hi Rick! It's one of my favorites! Especially the burning nose is ingenious and also Ethel cutting the spaghetti with a scissor! Do you recall the Jimmy Durante huge shnahz on two adjacent frames at Brown Derby(if you know who Durante is)? Also Fred wearing the Hawaiian shirt was definitely not the way American men dressed in that era even in Los Angeles! Finally Rick you and I are prejudiced about "LA at Last" because we live in Los Angeles, California!

I loved the very clever spaghetti and the scissors incident. The part where she chases the fork across the table is magical. The back and forth with the plant is hysterical. Pushing Ethel on the floor was great. You can almost imagine yourself acting this stupid around a celebrity and making a big a$$ of yourself. Lucy never gave up!!! I have a mini library of I Love Lucy videos. It was colorized a while back. I don't know if I have this one in color. Must check now! This is my favorite episode. The nose scene is of course classic, but Holdens panic was so unexpected. I think too at one time there was a Holden-Ball flirtation, probably during Mrs Grant Takes Richmond. My favorite scene is where Ricky brings Holden home and Lucy suddenly discoveres her shyness around stars and she buries her head in the corner of the room and tells Ricky she'll see him in his next picture.The writing is unequaled with perhaps exceptions like Will and Grace who can get away with so much more today.

Hey, Rick, you're right. Not only the best of the Hollywood episodes but one of the top five of all the I love Lucy episodes. But you have to hand it to William Holden. He elevated this episode to classic. He didn't rest on his stardom and he didn't just do a walk on and walk off. He is adorable when he looks at Lucy with sheepish eyes when they were in the restaurant and that pie when it spilled on him was perfectly sprayed. Great job William Holden. And of all the stars that appeared on I love Lucy, he fit right into the tempo and the air of physical comedy and what a good guy for taking the pie.

It has to be remembered that Lucille Ball was in over 70 movies and on a top radio show before I Love Lucy. And after a few episodes I Love Lucy was rated #1 in the country. Lucille Ball's face was on the cover of TV guide more than any one ever - it has been said that by that time her face was seen more than any one's face around the world. She was a big name and big star by this point and the show was top rated in the 5 or (6?) seasons it was on. I remember when George Burns was on The Lucy Show, a fabulous episode, actually one of my very favorites where they did similar skit like Burns and Allen and then sang together and did a soft shoe dance - wonderful amazing the best❤❤to both of them.

Bullseye, Rick! The Hollywood eps, for me, are the pinnacle of the entire series, and for the cast and crew to practically "shoot the wad" on the first one with "L.A. at Last" raised the bar for the ones that followed. They came close everytime, IMO! If "LA at Last" is a 10, no other H'wood ep dropped below an 8, IMO. I was probably in my teens when, after having seen every "ILL" dozens of times, even by then, I saw this ep, and for the first time, absolutely howled at the putty nose scene....the absolute preposterousness that Lucy would think that that would fool anyone, but we believe it, 'cause we knew how desperate she was to "hide" herself from Holden and the pie accident! And, of course, Ricky's eyes bugging out almost as far as Lucy's nose! Finally, I've long told friends that if I ever win the lottery, I'd buy a house and have the Ricardo's Hollywood suite re-created within, as well as another room that replicated their Connecticut house, another set I loved from my second favorite ep collection in the series! For a future vid, might I suggest a funny one from the country house....I like the one where the gang dresses as gangsters after Ricky's put in the down payment. Any of the chicken eps would do, too! In short, Rick......YOU DA MAN!!!

I read somewhere on the internet recently that Henry Fonda said that Lucille Ball was the love of his life; a statement that was made by his daughter Jane Fonda too. Surprised me - they knew each other before she met Desi and starred in Big Street, never heard this before. While Fonda was a great actor and very physically attractive, he was acc. to some quite cold, even to his children, and having a love of my life statement did not seem to fit how he was characterized. He was one of the people, who participated in the Dean Martin Roast of Lucille Ball. (He said that he met Lucille for a date when she and Ginger Rogers were roommates together).

Since it's just my opinion, I think that the episode with Harpo Marx is the funnies. When Harpo and Lucy were doing their "Mirror" skit, the first time I ever saw it I laughed so hard that I cried! I've seen it many times since then, and I laugh so very hard each time. I try not to think about what's coming up. Again, it's my favorite Hollywood episode "scene". I always enjoy your comments! Thank you!

I've always felt like the sets were almost like another character in the show. So realistic. Also, Lucy and Ethel really played the part of fans sooo well!! PS: I never saw their car pull into the Beverly Carlton hotel. The tv station must've cut it out. Thanks Rick!!!!

This is one of my favorite episodes. All of the Hollywood episodes are just great. The scene I love the most is when Lucy tries to be cool and spin her pasta on her fork. She takes too much and Ethel has to cut it with scissors. Too funny. My favorite of the New York episodes is when Lucy and Fred ride the ferry to test the sea sickness pills and fall asleep going back and forth between Staten Island and Manhattan. They make it to the passport office just in time but Lucy. ........lol

Hi Rick, this episode with Mr. Holden in the Restaurant where Lucy was watching him having dinner and how he turned the tables on her and started watching her. Also back at the hotel where Lucy found out Mr. Holden came over and did not want to face him and putting on the fake nose. It was so funny when Mr. Holden lit what he thought was a cigarette and the look on Ricky"s Face was so funny. Rick could you review the episode of the commercial for Vitametavegin when Lucy gets drunk from the health tonic in the bottle supposedly with vitamins and minerals but which also had alcohol, that episode took me out, it was so funny that I laughed all day any my husband thought it was funny. Also could you review the episode of where Lucy tries to tell Ricky she is pregnant?

For those amused by nutty continuity bloopers on the series, this episode has one. When Ricky's wearing armor in the studio office of Mr. Sherman (played by Dayton Lummis, who had played Bill Parker in Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined), Sherman introduces him to William Holden. Yet at the party in the Homecoming episode, Ricky tells people he first met Bill Holden at the studio commissary when Holden was serving lunch.

You mentioned that Lucy wanted to elevate her status by having Holden guest star on the show; however, I just found out that they did a movie together in 1949 when she was at her peak in cinema and before he was a household name which came after Sunset Boulevard. So I don't think its to elevate her status, but more so just friends reuniting.
@ricknineg

Well think about it. It was her show. It brings her reputation and clout to have a movie star on her TV show...even if they knew each other before. It’s like if I start bringing Tom Cruise and Jennifer Aniston on here for interviews. It def help

I loved it and just happened to watch it the other day! I am so sad, I think I did a dumb thing when downsizing I had a whole box full of "I LoVe Lucy" VHS tapes and I think I got rid of them! 😢Hoping I'm wrong as you can not see all the episodes anymore and I feel they are disappearing on mainstream media. Truly one of the best shows in television history! Fairly new subscriber here and enjoying the history of television shows

I ordered all 5 seasons on RU-vid. I have heard people complain about paying. It has been so well worth it, have seen the 5 seasons several times during this lock down of Covid-19. Laughter and wonder along with love here in this show has kept my spirits high. When I have belly laughs and pleasure with the love I feel - it's all I need. Thank you to I Love Lucy, the writers, the Fab 4 team, and others who participated in making this show, for me, the greatest ever. There was a special magic here that I believe will spread into the future.

Completely agree. This has been my favorite episode since I was a child. Never realized they used the exterior of the Beverly Carlton. It’s now called the Avalon and they’ve done a great job of preserving it in all it’s mid century glory. That’s where Marilyn Monroe roomed with Shelley Winters.

This episode shows off all of the elements that made the show great. The writing is sharp and walks the fine line between really funny, and too silly to be believable. The relationship and interactions between Lucy and Desi show off how skilled they were at acting together. William Holden is obviously having a good time playing a character who's not his usual type. What brings it all together is the way that the cameras were used. Remember, this was a long time ago and cameras were huge and bulky. Still, Desi's 3 camera setup allowed flipping back and forth between them without interruptions. That caught each closeup and reaction as they happened. They weren't staged afterward. We take that for granted now, but it was a new innovation back then. Today, TV shows are still shot using the 3 camera setup that he invented. Also back then, after a TV show aired, the film was routinely thrown away. Desi knew that those old films had value and insisted on keeping them, and keeping ownership of them so that they could be aired again. Desilu, not the network, owned the filmed shows. That's how the rerun and TV syndication were invented. Because of that, Desilu made a lot of money and we can still watch the shows today.
@LJ-ht4zs
@LJ-ht4zs 2 года назад
Unfortunately, when he wanted Desilu to buy RKO he sold I Love Lucy back to CBS. (on one hand, worst deal ever for them, but CBS had the ability to re-air them where Desilu did not) Can you imagine having the rights - CBS must have made many millions and millions of dollars on the re-runs. Also if Desi had not bought RKO - Mission Impossible, Star Trek, The Untouchables would not have been produced.
