This is 100% true. My uncle worked on a military ship. And would tell us stories about how dolphins would approach them. He said sharks would sometimes follow the ships also and that they would run from dolphins. I didn't understand it. Because as a kid I thought sharks were kings of the sea. And my uncle told me "The Dolphins know how to drown them." Drown a shark? I asked. He told me "Yes. Me and my military brothers would watch dolphins swim under the sharks like lightening and ram their stomachs knocking them unconscious. While unconscious the sharks would drown and die." He told me some dolphins would hit the sharks so hard from underneath...it would propel them out the water completely, literally sending them airborne. He said they only did that to the sharks...when the sharks tried to approach the ship, as though they were protecting them.
@@katiequinn8130 They have gills for a reason sweet pea. Any sea animal with gills can drown if their gills are effected or closed off. That's how their gills work. Water flows in and out functioning like lungs to help them breathe in water...the fact that you don't know this while posting a comment...
@@terancetheindomitable9701 No they do not eat them. They know that sharks are killers. In many cases they have lost their babies to sharks, or seen them kill other sea animals. So, they know! So they kill the sharks by drowning them. My uncle told me they would kill the sharks that got close to their ship. And would actually swim near the skip to protect it from the sharks. But they also swam near the ships because they are curious about humans and would see the sailors standing on the ships and watch them.
I saw a group of dolphins off the beach at Nags Head NC. Awesome sight. I jumped in to swim with them but they were past the breakers and I couldn't get out fast enough.
Living in Florida it always amazes me how many dumb tourist think they're going to jump off the boat and swim with the Dolphins..."uhh no you're not"..."why not cap?"....me...."they aren't your friends, they're waiting to run through you like a freight train". This video is a bit skewed, most "friendly" Dolphins are around humans almost daily. Think Ducks hanging out around a retention pond and rubbing "elbows" with humans cause they think you have food. While there are cases of Dolphins saving people etc. The vast majority aren't out there with hearts and pink bows for mankind.
Because they read the Florida vacation guide . Anybody who gets in the ocean gets what they deserve ! To many deadly creatures and things screwed up by man to wanna be I'n it
Here, in Southport Nc, while fishing in my Kayak ,they often bump the boat, not hard but it's enough to get my attention I guess it kind of a game to them.
Yeah im going to have to call BS I use to work on prawn trawlers in far north queensland and the by catch which got thrown aft would always attract scavengers, mainly sharks and dolphins. When a pod would turn up small sharks would immediately give up the prime position but big sharks (usually tigers or bronze whalers) never did and the dolphins kept a respectful distance.
Flipmode you can call me Flipper -Busta Rhymes I never thought about how they sleep..Dolphins are charmers😘🤣 I wouldnt want to work with the Killer Whales even though they're really smart i wouldnt get in the water with them
Had a woman I was trying to have a relationship with that had a dolphin tattoo. Considering that dolphins are known to be psychotic, I may have dodged something.
Bro Im living in Caraguatatuba, and never knew bout this happenns, that is Crazy , I was just watching a casually video About dolphins and get knowing that
Orcas are the real shark's nightmare. They will slam into the side and rip the liver out of great white sharks. They also know how to turn the sharks over (upside down) which causes the shark to go into a trance -
They are also much bigger and heavy than the average dolphin. They are actually the Apex Predator in the ocean. They also like to play with their food which means. They will be messing with the shark while they are killing it. I definitely wouldn’t want to be they prey to an orca.
@@davidrichardson2307 yeah they are also very intelligent they know we don’t belong in the ocean and are not natural food source. I would love to swim with orcas but I’m afraid they will get agitated or feel threatened by my presence so I will just watch videos of them and admire them from a distance if I ever do see one. I would also love to swim with sharks but I’m not a professional and I don’t know anything about shark behavior so I’m just going to keep dreaming on that one. I want to do a lot but just common sense tells me no and I listen to my instincts so I guess I’ll never swim with sharks or orcas haha.
That wasn't death by dolphin. That was death by drunken stupidity! Any animal, even those who are normally harmless or friendly with people, will respond poorly when antagonized or frightened! Just sad.
Yep. Eastern Indigo's used to crawl up on me to get warm. But before they did I always put the back of my hand in front of them to smell me. they got to know me because I was completely non-aggressive towards them and they instinctively knew that.
As someone who used to spend upto 6 hours a day in the ocean, I had so many great experiences surfing with them. From following them to catch the best waves, to one riding right under my board with me along the entire wave, to a bunch of them swimming straight at me and one jumping right over me to avoid collision. Great experiences!
The intelligence of orcas and dolphins is incredible. The fact that they know where to hit the shark in order to cause the most damage. How can they tell?
@@1PITIFULDUDE I like to believe that it has more to do with my theory on the "window effect" Each and every memory that a female lived through would be transfered to her young. I find the most ridiculous reason "natural instinct illogical as this implies knowledge that came with just the mere reason of existing and not through some kind of experiential reason.
@@CHAlVlELEOlVSo you think a mother passing on her memories to offspring through some type of neuropathic link is more plausible than an animal knowing the weak points on their prey?
@@mattbradley408 Yes why not? They are in fact interconnected from the very start, Why not then just look at how our and other organism bodies work, everything is interconnected in some way working in conjuction to sustain the body for the challenges of life itself, why not a survival like method for all living creatures, that can be relayed info based on past experiences like where to migrate, where to hunt, what to look out for etc. The logic is there, just try and fit the pieces of the puzzle together that is all.
Dolphins can “see” every organ in the sharks body. I’ve heard pregnant women attract the attention of dolphins because they can “see” the baby inside her womb. Their sonar is supposed to be quite advanced..
When I was on holiday we went on a boat trip and I got in the water and there was a pod close by one of them came right up to my belly I was a little panicked but it gently put its nose on my baby bump
A great instance of dolphins saving humans from sharks was a group of four swimmers who were stranded in open water off the coast of New Zealand in 2004. The dolphins noticed the shark before the swimmers did and saved them from becoming shark food as the dolphins kept circling around them until the shark lost interest and left. Also, at least the fatal dolphin attack on those two Brazilian guys wasn’t unprovoked.
I watched a video a while back where a pod of dolphins protected an ocean swimmer from sharks several times (during the same swim). I believe it was off the coast of New Zealand.
that happens almost routinely, many stories, from many of that family of marine mammals, other whales too, huge and all, protecting humans from nearby sharks, cus people dont notice them but whales do and the stay close to warn or protect
@@juliaweber212 it's really fascinating to me how many people are rescued or protected by sea creatures - many of which are hunted and/or abused by the very species (us) they try to protect.
The same thing happened in FL. Rip tides took the swimmer out to sea, as soon as a shark started tracking the swimmer, a pod of dolphins appeared & surrounded and pushed the swimmer to shore. Sooooo cool.
Dolphins are truly the guardians of the ocean's. There unexpectedly to lend a hand, lead us away from impending danger, and circle us if they sense sharks. Orcas are sharks nightmares. They must freeze on sight. Because they sure are Huge, and intimidating. But none the less, always in awe of the animal kingdom. Thank you sir Dave.
I guess its also being a guardian to kill the children of female dolphins because theyre too busy taking care of said child Or to rape dead fish but whatever you say 🤷♀
we have two subspecies of bottlenose in backyard docks and ocean side gulf mixed with infopacific porpoise dna, they get large and see see them all the time. They follow boats, steal fish sometimes, one can within feet of me to silently steal minnow trap while back was turned, looking right in my eye, then flipping its tail to get away with stolen prize. Had to be upper limit 13 plus foot male. They say away from us almost always and should boats hurt them and manatees. I've seen dead sharks and porpoises, a shark can kill a dolphin and do. Dolphins kill fish skates, marine mammals (they are toothed whales) and kill smaller younger, other species toothed whales just for fun. They're no saints, just wild anumals, they kill for fun or because share niche and play with dead. They kill each other occasionally, area is famous for themsee anytime. Wild animals should be left alone, especially clever animals. Sharks are fumb fish, swim mate eat, porpoises look clever but can be just as vicious as any other animal, within limits of species.
Wow, this is so cool. I’ve been thinking about stories of dolphins protecting ppl from sharks, and I wondered why the sharks avoid dolphins & I concluded it was bc the way the dolphin can hit them.
Dolphins are their rivals that’s why sharks avoid them and chances are that dolphins save people not because they like people but because they hate sharks.
David David David, put down that tuna and nutella sandwich and listen. Dolphins have also been known to attack orcas, not many ppl know this. It's yet to be filmed bt pods of dolphins HAVE killed killer whales before although it's apparently rare. One marine biologist actually witnessed it bt unfortunately for her she never had her camera on her at the time, only few ppl on the boat one guy had a camera with very blurry shots nothing worth showing as most the action happened under water and yes the marine biologist did have her goggles she witnessed the killer whale being set upon by the entire dolphin pod that repeatedly rammed into the much larger killer whale until it died. That started her new research into dolphin behaviour she planned to film it next time bt I'm not sure if she ever was lucky enough to witness that again
I love dolphins, I actually bumped into one underwater last week in Florida where I live while riding my underwater sea scooter. Didn't realize it was a dolphin as water wasn't really clear that day. But Horizontal tale gave me an idea... unless that was a manatee, but it was way too fast for a manatee.
Pacific bottle nose my favorite. Having fished commercially, I have a high amount of respect for these animals. But no contest, world’s most intelligent and ferocious sea predator is the Orca.
It's not the most intelligent but it certainly is the biggest/strongest big game predator today. But it wasn't always this way. 5 million years ago giant sharks and giant carnivorous whales hunted orcas.
@@jacobbrown1690 quite the opposite. Orca numbers were dwindling during megaladons reign. Climate change killed off most baleen whales starving megaladons and levyiatans. Orcas also almost went extinct during this event but their small size saw them though. Ever since the giant predators went extinct baleen whales, orcas and gws have prosperred
Dolphins are highly emotional creatures, they love, just like humans, but if you love you will be very warlike. What does mean; how will you respond if someone, something, or even those just like you threatens to hurt or kill someone you love? It means you are warlike, very few creatures are warlike, dolphins, killer whales, other whale species, lions, ANTS, and humans. Warlike is not a negative trait, it means you are willing to fight and die for those you love and your moral imperatives. Why do dolphins help humans in distress or threatened by sharks, for the same reasons humans help dolphins and whales that are in distress. One day humanity may have to face alien races and we will ask one question; do they love or behave as sharks or crocodiles?
I never thought dolphins have a dark side and that the reason why they’d go against sharks is to protect themselves, their young and other creatures in the water. It’s why they’re called ocean’s lifeguard. As for the wild dolphin that killed a person, that one only killed in self defense since the drunk guys were harassing it.
Dolphins are social and lives in packs just like wolves. They are very intelligent, even more than dogs. Also they are very strong and can hit you really hard, it's like to be hit by a car with speed 40km/h, so they might look sweet and kind creatures, but they could be very dangerous. Since Sharks avoids them, that can give you an idea they are no joke.
@@Delimon007 there are bull sharks, tiger sharks and gws populations that make a living off hunting dolphins. You will see many videos on RU-vid of sharks hunting dolphins. 1+1=2 it's that simple
@@trvth1sstop defending dolphins and making them look innocent, there’s plenty of dolphins that attack and kill sharks for no reason, dolphins have even attacked humans for no reason, stop acting dolphins will hug you if you step into the ocean.
@@xtronvultron4811 there are videos of dolphins killing sharks 1/4 of their mass. There are also videos of sharks killing dolphins their sane size. Shark jaw>dolphin jaw. Intelligence only saves those intelligent enough to make speaks and nukes
Dolpins are great protecters of their own kind. Sharks not bad but eat anything in sight. Like they say family that stays together survives together. Wish hmans was the same.
dolphins have been recorded to kill other species of dolphin for no reason, and sharks, though solitary, show a great amount of social sophistication que they come across other sharks. and they cant eat human meat, they vomit it out, so no. they dont eat everything in sight.
Only a select few sharks will eat anything like bull sharks, most sharks will not eat just anything. Most of the time they just take a nibble (which can obviously be deadly for you) and realize they can't eat you.
Sharks eat dolphins all the time. I watched a bull shark hunting a dolphin in the Dampier Archipelago. The dolphin was almost beaching itself to get away as the shark continually seemed to be herding it towards the beach. The water was calm and crystal clear so I could clearly see the both the shark and the dolphin. The shark seemed to lose interest after about 15 minutes. I was surprised the dolphin couldn't outswim the shark.
They try to hunt them, but then most sharks most likely will avoid them as prey because of the difficulty as well as the repercussions of encountering the whole pod
Most dolphins can easily outswim sharks. He must've been injured. And that was a one on one situation. Most dolphins travel in packs. That was probably an injured dolphin that fell away from the pack.
Dolphins and whales are both cetaceans, but if you follow the family trees down to the next step which separates the whales from the dolphins & porpoises… you realize that orcas are not small whales - they’re actually the largest dolphins. And they are scary smart, also hang out in large pods, and are generally bigger than sharks… Orcas are the real nightmares for sharks, and the apex predator of the oceans.
@@nyctophilia6270 no. it really is though. there are no other creatures that can defeat an orca unless you count getting crushed by a blue whale's tail slap. which it's too smart to let happen. the "Depths" have nothing but boneless creatures that can actually survive the pressure and hold no power over any other animal.
Dolphins are just same as dogs----some good some rabid some loyal some playful---but capable of empdthy and are self aware can learn an equitable language to communicate and are very horney human level and are dangerously jealous creatures
That's neat. But sharks are not just "considered" the Apex predator....they are. The same way crows will attack and harass eagles and hawks.......dolphins harass sharks. We all know that, should a great white or tiger shark WANT to annihilate a dolphin, they could. The same way a red tail or bald eagle could decide to annihilate the harassing crows, should they want to put the effort in.
In the wild orcas do not attack humans. In captivity orcas do sometimes attack humans. It seems to me if you show dolphins respect then they'll respond appropriately.
