I don't know why but I have had a lot of problems with this video, firstly RU-vid blocked it for false copyright claims but I was able to get it back and then people have been messaging me that the video wont play for them personally, I have also noticed this video isn't being pushed as much as my other videos. So if you could like, subscribe and share this video, it would truly help me! Many thanks - Jamble.

I really liked the point about the way the actress delivers that "You have not seen what I have seen." line. You're 100% right - she does it with a sort of superiority, instead of sounding like someone who's afraid of a terrible danger and is just trying to alert others to the danger. And so it begins....we see the cracks in even the acting at this early stage.
@Jamble
@Jamble 2 года назад
Oh yeah! Without a doubt! Its from the actress/directors feeling a sort of "superiority" as if they know they are right, rather than the character motivation of "Oh no, evil is coming and I must warn everyone" and not going to lie, as someone who has studied acting/theatre/directing its very easy for me to see character motivations and flaws just from small clips!

What Amazon doesn't understand is that between 500-600 million copies of Tolkien's works have been sold since it's first printing. Of those about 100-150 million went to serious fans like me I still have my first set from 50 + years ago, the lore and story are very important to us. As the old saying goes " don't piss down my back and tell me its raining" which is exactly what these showrunners and writers are doing, they lack the vision and understanding to create a good story let alone tackle something like Tolkien's works, they are making a mockery of it. It filled with all kinds of wokeness (I dislike this term but it is applicable), they make all kinds of false claims because they are completely ignorant of the source material. It is also totally bogus to accuse the fans of all kinds of hate, racism, etc. because they don't like what they have seen so far. The fans are concerned because they are passionate about Tolkien's works and dislike it being disrespected. If you want a modern story then write your own and produce that instead of taking a dump on a great man's works. Can you image updating the Mona Lisa with a modern hair style? The huge and cry that would be raised, That's what it's like for us.

I recognize this but consider that this will probably be a massive gateway for a bunch of new Tolkien fans. I agree as well that racebending is somewhat corporate-driven and an attempt to avoid criticism more than anything else. Though I am holding out that whoever they have cast are actually talented actors who can pull off all these roles. Also I have said this in other comments. This is literally not them going back to the text and changing it, you can always just read the books again they aren't going anywhere. Adaptations IMO have to stay true to the source material but only if it is practical, LOTR just simply isn't a practical thing to rly adapt both narrativly or thematically. Jackson came close 20 years ago and I adore those films but there is plenty of made up nonsense in them, stuff that is cut and characters that are completely misrepresented (Gimli becoming comic relief after the first film comes to mind). And what I mean by it being difficult to to translate thematically i that generally speaking any action adventure is going to romanticise a power fantasy of some kind, be it fighting a bunch of orcs with a cool sword or something else. And the ring kind of tempts its users with very similar fantasies of domineering power. By nature it is difficult to adapt without cutting against the themes of the book. Even Christopher Tolkien thought so of the films.

Uh, considering you haven't seen it yet, its pretty hard to say why Tolkien would hate it. Christopher Tolkien despised Jacksons Lord of the Rings SO badly that he said he had to 'turn away' from the whole creation his father had made. The Hobbit of course was brutalized beyond all recognition, so this certainly can't do worse than that. I doubt highly it will be good, its likely made for a new generation that probably hasn't even seen TLOTR, so the story will simply be 'placed' in Middle Earth. That said, you can have really good writers who tell really good stories. I doubt that will happen because the entertainment industry is SO overrun that back when Hollywood was only putting out three networks and maybe a dozen name films a year we rarely got much of quality. But trying to jump the gun means only that you are judging something before even seeing it, which makes that opinion fairly rudimentary. Tolkiens "On Fairie Stories" is required reading to actually state what he may like or not. It MAY be true, we know from his notes that what Jackson did he'd most certainly hate, but there's some pretty rabid Jackson fans that don't like to hear that despite it being pretty obvious. But again, Amazon has more money than god and this is on their streaming service. Even if NOBODY watched it, it would be virtually impossible to even know whether it 'fails'. Its hard to know nowadays what NOT failing on a streaming service means. Fact is, this will be on their streaming service FOREVER, meaning thats a long time to make its money back, but then Amazon need only buy old sitcoms and make shitty movies and shows like Netflix, this one apparantly they are doing simply because Bezos claims to be a Tolkien fan. I think it goes without saying there is a pretty large chunk of at least the american audience that likely would hate it regardless of what it came out with.

Fair comment about the "its not out yet, so its hard to decide" I just want you to know that the title and thumbnail are just for clicks in this day and age where you need clickable titles. I mention in the video how Christopher Tolkien despised it and how his father would've hated it too, but for most fans, it was a pretty fair portrayal of what happened and they clearly did try to be as accurate as they could within boundaries of films and having to cut out major parts like the destruction of the shire. I also think that Amazon is retconning not only the book, but the movie universe already established too and that most fans will just dislike it because of how far out it will be compared to Peter Jackson's work. Thanks for the comment, you should keep watching though, because I address the claims you make in the comments!

@@Jamble Tolkien himself was more open than his son to allowing adaptations of his work, but he was also highly critical of them. I think he would be flattered by the effort put in by all the various adaptations over the years, but still hold strong opinions and very rarely agree with variation from his text. But he was capable of understanding that a film or TV show has different needs from a book, and I believe that the Peter Jackson movies would have met with his approval largely, with some caveats. But the elephant in the room is obviously how our culture has become more diverse than during his era, and while I'd like to believe he'd be an enlightened soul who could appreciate this change and roll with it, there's literally no way of telling. Either way - whether Tolkien the man would have or not - the sort of "fan" who is bothered by race changes is a wretched creature and an Orc at heart.

I haven’t finished yet, but I think you’ve made a pretty large error. Harfoots *did* exist in the Second Age, and while they were one of three predecessor races to the Hobbits of the mid- to late-Third Age, they weren’t the hobbits we know. They were somewhat nomadic compared to Third Age hobbits, as they made their way from the Vale of Anduin to Bree over a 1000 year period. There they merged with the other halfling races (Fallohides & Stoors) to give us the hobbits of The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings. In other words, they’re not made up BS by Amazon.
@Jamble
@Jamble 2 года назад
They were the first group to cross the Misty Mountains, settling in the lands around Bree starting in the Third Age 1050. "Hobbits" existed but they were not a prominent race and there is no hobbit stories or information and they had no part to play in the wars and conflicts of the 1st and 2nd ages. So you can play "technicalities" but there were no Hobbits in the stories.

Can't lie bro, the beginning of chapter 2 where you describe woke people is just straight up wrong. Plenty of catholic people are woke. Caring about diversity isn't woke lol it's moreso about understanding that the stories you tell and how they are presented impacts the culture. I personally believe that tolkien didn't envision of any of the principle characters in the legendarium as people of colour. But that's most likely because it reflected his worldview; I doubt he knew many people of colour or was friends with them. Not in a racist way mind you but more to do with that fact of where and when he grew up. I think that the slight racebending (no principle characters race has been changed) really isn't a fault of the show it's more of an attempt to make it appropriate to the modern and diverse audience who will enjoy it. And while I agree there are things to be aid about preserving integrity of the original works, I think something like skin colour has little to no bearing on the overall themes of the legendarium. It is more important that they preserve the more core values of the works which will reflect tolkiens own values. For example the showrunners have kept the age rating around 13 as they want the whole family to to enjoy it. From the trailer it looks like the whole show is basically good elves and humans vs bad sauron, orcs and bad humans (Keeping it vague cause now is familiar with source material and spoilers) Also woke people not caring about god??? The people I know in real life who would probably call themselves woke are all extremely religious lol.

I agree I’m sure they are very religious, just not to God. Also have people regressed to such an extent where they can only enjoy a program if there is a person that looks like them? Can’t connect to things that they do or what they believe in? Truly it is the American progressive way of thinking and nothing else. Lastly, a story made by an Englishman about a medieval fairytale England having an all homogenous cast is not appropriate for the modern viewer? Or the American viewer?

I think we also have different definitions of woke, but not gonna discuss that here cause it basically has no meaning anymore as people use it completely differently. Also I'm not American, THAT WAY of thinking is a little too much for my taste. Also I agree on your point about people being able to connect to things that are different, however it is still nice to see yourself visually being reflected. This is actually more of an important thing for people WHO ARENT necessarily being reflected on screen, being able to see characters of different looks or skin colour or whatever is important because it shapes the way people look at those people in the real world. Narratives and the way people are portrayed in them are important. We wouldn't be having this discussion if it wasn't. I recognise your point about the nature of medieval England which Tolkien isn't actually making a mythology for his mythos is influenced by greek/finnish (the ones he enjoyed). This aspect of the works was one, NOT the only reason Tolkien had for writing The Legendarium. Also it's quite clear Tolkien made it for his own enjoyment rather for some great artistic use considering that The Silmarillion and other work (where the bulk of the mythology aspect lies) were published posthumously and unfinished. Im certain Tolkien would have gladly kept working at them forever if he had the chance with no one having any chance to enjoy them. Secondly does that aspect of Tolkiens works have to pertain to skin colour aswell in an adaptation. Is it sacreligious to have a black person in middle earth lol. ESPECIALLY if the themes of the works are still communicated fairly. Also one final point, bruh its not like the are erasing your headcanon of these characters appearances or burning every copy of the text. It's an adaptation that the people working on it seem to e joy being part of and plenty of them seem to be genuine fans who are trying their best to adapt what is essentially like 6 pages of timeline stuff.

I'm currently twenty minutes into this video and I'd like to express my opinion regarding your stance on the "Harfoots" (Hobbits) of _The Rings of Power._ As far as I know, this show will take place thousands of years before _The Lord of the Rings,_ which is plenty of time for the culture and accents of the Harfoots/ Hobbits to change into those of their descendants. Ethnic/ racial groups do not stay the same; culture, languages, and even physical traits continually change - and those changes accumulate over multiple generations until successive generations are notably quite different from their ancestors. Hence, the different accents and styles of dress - and even the presence of a few Harfoots/ Hobbits who are darker and coarse-haired - relative to the Hobbits of _The Lord of the Rings_ is not problematic. Consider the phenotype of _Cheddar Man,_ the human male fossil found in Gough's Cave in Cheddar Gorge, Somerset, England; according to DNA tests, he was dark skinned, had black hair, and was lactose intolerant, which made him quite phenotypically and genotypically different from modern ethnic English people. Furthermore, considering that Tolkien - as far as I know - didn't write much material for the time period during which _The Rings of Power_ takes place, the showrunners have plenty of room to fill in details that are absent from the source material, without changing what is in the source material. Is this any different from Peter Jackson deciding to give elves pointy ears despite them not being described as having such ears in Tolkien's books?

 @Jamble OK, let's try it this way: Two main outtakes from your video is that "Tolkien would hate Amazon corporation so he must hate their TV Show" and "Tolkien is Christian conservative so he would hate the woke show-runners". Fine points in on itself, and I'm sure you're right. But this speaks nothing about the show itself. In the beginning you spent several minutes talking about beautiful Jackon's movies. Sorry to break it to you but those were not made by a random people from forests...Warner was a massive Hollywood corporation as well. Why didn't you address this? Oh I see, you're building a narrative here. So let's look at your wokeness argument. Based on what's known about the show so far (and what pics you used when telling us this), I assume you just hate that there are black elves and women in main roles. Why would this be in any way against Tolkien's religion? The opposite of Christianity is not wokeness, and you can be a woke christian (even though, admittedly, Tolkien wasn't). But the idea that Middle-Earth must remain just about white male is simply stupid. After all...Galadriel!!! She's very much Tolkien's character and very much action-driven lady who led her people through ice wastes to Beleriand. And to your point that wokeness destroys all media, that comics are bankrupt and netflix is loosing subscribers because of it? Comics were going bankrupt long before the concept of wokeness was invented and Netflix is loosing customers because of the Amazon and other streaming giants entering, what was essentially a Netflix's monopoly. You have to get more convincing arguments here. Not to mention your perfect Jackson's movies were also "woke" in their time, when they decided to expand the role of Arwen from the pretty lady our hero wins after saving the world to a woman who saved Frodo and fought for what she desired.

Okay so - my biggest point with the Amazon argument was that he hated the "Industrial Revolution" (absolutely despised it) though in his lifetime, he did use a car which was created with mass production. So he disliked it, but understood its relevance. BUT and a big but, is that he had the biggest problem with factories taking up landscapes and replacing workers with machinery and treating their workers badly. That is Amazon, to my knowledge Warner Bros doesn't have factories. The Jackson movies are absolutely great and they do a great job at portraying Good vs Evil and Tolkien's beliefs and morals, though they are not completely perfect and have faults, they are still great films which were made out of the love of Tolkien's work, rather than just trying to use his name purely for profit like the Amazon series. Your problem here is with Christianity which again, isn't really the point, the point is Tolkien is a Catholic and had those views in his world, I am not one who thinks people cant have sex before marriage or anything, but Tolkien would and so if there's sex scenes without marriage, Tolkien's views would've been ignored and thrown away? Its not about what we care about, its about what Tolkien cared about. Its his work. Manga are comics and they are doing better than ever before, One Piece has sold more than the entire batman series and it came out in the 90s. The difference between western and eastern "comics" is that the east care about stories and characters and the west care about political narratives and inclusion. Manga is doing better than ever, Comics are not being sold. Your statement of Comics failing before the wokeness is false, its because of the wokeness. I think your issue is with Christianity and anything anti-woke. TBH I said in my video, I have no problem with shows that have non-christian views and progressive morals, I even have shows I consume and watch that have those morals, my issue is that it doesn't fit within Middle-Earth. Your issue is that people won't shut up and let them change middle-earth and Tolkien's stories.

My biggest point is rather than turning an English cultured and a morally Catholic franchise into something more American cultured and morally progressive. Why can't they just make a series about a fantasy which already shares their views, for example - I enjoy Harry Potter and Harry Potter is far more progressive than Lord of the Rings. I say this in my video, just adapt a fantasy which has these values instead of twisting one which doesn't.

I'm with you Andrej I also agree this whole woke thing, to me it is ridiculous. Black actors or women leading roles, WHO CARES. If the show sucks it will not be because of gay, black or women being pushed on to me. It would be cause it has bad writing and acting. You are right harfoots are hobbits no question about it in his lore. But for the clothing could it be maybe in the 2nd age clothing was not as good as it is in the 3rd age for that race. I mean things do just get better as the age come and go. Just look at us. CLOTHING is completely different compared to Tolkien's time to now.

@@arod077 how would you feel if you were watching a movie set in Africa 1000 years ago, and then all of a sudden, a white dude pops up out of nowhere, and then you see that there's a whole bunch of white men and women all over the place. you probably wouldn't be to happy, its the same thing, middle-earth is Tolkien's story for England's history. black actors dont belong on such a story, unless they are easterlings, now I would have no problem if the show runners went with that option, but no... we HAVE to have darker skinned actors in places they make absolutely no sense

16:45 The series takes place at approximately 1500-1700 second age. Events of LOtR take place at the very end of third age, so isn't it possible that Hobbits were different back then? There's almost 5000 years between the events. People and nations change. Annoying title for video. I'd rather see objective examination instead of biased opinions.

I don’t think it’s the “possibility “ of different beings existences. I’m with you on that. Anything that Tolkien has not mentioned himself is possible to some extent, yes Hobbits are stated by him to not exist at this point in time Elves, however, do not change. Not a lot. It is stated clearly that elves do not view time passing the same way mortals do, but for travels. A bit of this is also laid out for the fellowship when they are in Lothlorién, as they do not remember how long they have been there, debating whether it was 3 or more days, when it was about a month.

@@epicfail3167 I’m not too familiar with the timelines prior to the hobbit. But I’m a huge fan of the original Tolkien lore. But it’s clear they’re just using the name to make something highly inaccurate. I thought the hobbit series was enough blasphemy, this new show is gonna blow that out of the water.
@Jamble

@Anvi Its very much implied through letters and interviews that Hobbits are more of an extension of Men. So they would've probably just have been Men and adapted to a more modern lifestyle which caused them to turn into Hobbits. My biggest problem with the Harfoots is that their clothing, accents, homes and core moral elements have been changed completely for this series.
