They may look serene as they glide across the surface of a stream, but don't be fooled by water striders. They're actually searching for prey for whom a babbling brook quickly becomes an inescapable death trap.

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
* NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! *
With the drought officially over and the summer heat upon us, people all across California are heading outdoors. For many, that means a day on the river or relaxing by the lake. The wet winter means there’s plenty of habitat for one of nature’s most curious creatures.
Water striders, also called pond skaters, seem to defy gravity. You’ve probably seen them flitting across the water’s surface, dodging ripples as they patrol streams and quiet backwater eddies.
Scientists like David Hu at Georgia Institute of Technology study how water striders move and how they make their living as predators lurking on the water’s surface. It’s an amazing combination of biology and physics best understood by looking up close. Very close.
--- What are water striders?
The common water strider (Gerris lacustris) is an insect typically found in slowly moving freshwater streams and ponds. They are able to move on the water's surface without sinking. They are easy to spot because they create circular waves on the surface of the water.
--- How do water striders walk on water?
Water tends to stick to itself (cohesion), especially at the surface where it meets the air (surface tension). Water striders don’t weigh very much and they spread their weight out with their long legs. Striders are also covered in microscopic hairs called micro-setae that repel water. Instead of sinking into the water, their legs push down and create dimples.
--- What do water striders eat?
Water striders are predators and scavengers. They use their ability to walk on water to their advantage, primarily eating other insects that fall into the water at get trapped by the surface tension. A water strider uses its tube-shaped proboscis to penetrate their prey’s exoskeleton, inject digestive enzymes and suck out the prey’s pre-digested innards.

Argh! It's a mayfly and not a caddisfly. Guess I was moving to fast on this one. The creek is full of caddisfly larvae and I assumed incorrectly that the adult was one too. Thanks for the catch. Glad you like the episode otherwise. - JoshC

Moving "too" fast. Two O's. By the way, the title of the video is weird. It could have been "This is Why Water Striders Can Walk on Water."

@HowSci, I think there's a line between correcting someone's Biology mistakes and grammar mistakes on a science video but oh man, opinions on how a science channel names their videos, my guy? Joshy boy did some good foreshadowing work to reel the kids in for some fun facts. Looks like the point. Speaking of points, theirs touches on more than just their ability to walk on water. HOH, It's almost like the video used similes AND foreshadowing? Man, even most English majors would have at least appreciated that, but I guess you didn't. Find me a fact only title other than Coyote Peterson's "I got bit" or "I got stung" videos that get 10 million views. This generation just wants science to be fun like it should be. ANYWAY.

Some roaches and caterpillars, most "singing" insects like cicadas and katydids, and a couple of others can "scream" or stridulate, the shock of the sound spooks most skittish predators (mainly birds and rodents). Water striders are pretty skittish, so I would assume a well placed screech would scare them off before they could bite too deep, then the insect could focus on reaching land.

@rad1009
@rad1009 7 лет назад
This individual has lost its cerci, but you can tell it is a mayfly based on the wing venation. Mayflies have more "primitive" wings like dragonflies, which are clear with lots of veins. Caddisflies are more closely related to moths, having reduced wing venation and wings covered in hairs.

argh, yeah you're right... It is a mayfly and not a caddisfly. Guess I was moving too fast on that one. The creek is full of caddisfly larvae and I assumed incorrectly that the adult was one too. Thanks for the catch. Glad you like the episode otherwise. - JoshC

After rewatching, the caddisfly has ironically become stuck on water. It lived most of its life underwater and emerge on the water's surface as an adult.

The insect era is coming soon - after humans wipe themselves out like the dinosaurs.
@chitinskin9860
@chitinskin9860 6 лет назад
The insect era happened before the dinosaurs. Not saying that it won't happen again, especially considering the higher carbon content in the environment from pollution. All they need is for the plants to make a comeback from deforestation, processing the massive amounts of carbon dioxide we produced into oxygen, both helping the larger insects breath and making them grow, and they will own the world again.

How do they drink water if they can't get wet?
@MochYee
@MochYee 7 лет назад
Good question! My guess would be that the tiny hairs on their body are also good at catching moisture from the air, particularly at night, and I guess they use that moisture to drink water. IDK though, it's just a guess.
