A message that is repeated over and over at Creekside Nursery is that fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs, and most perennials in your garden. Last November we planted our privacy berm, and the plants prove that this is why we plant in the fall! Come with us as we walk through the garden and tour these very happy plants.

I hear you, I covered my hydrangeas with bird netting after I saw the buds eaten off my Little Quickfires! This seemed to work until the netting tore the new flowers as I removed it each morning. So I had to quit doing it, so far all is well, so 🤞! 🦌🤨🇨🇦

Jenny, you give me hope after being so emotionally wrecked with the desiccation of my garden and our deck and its gabled roof collapsing in this horrific heat wave in the DFW area. It has been hard watching beautiful gardens on YT when I've about given up on everything and the expense of trying to keep it up and at the same time, rebuild our backyard deck. Praying God gives me strength to get back out there and plant this Fall as I want my beautiful hydrangeas and other plants back. I've also been wanting to plant North Pole Arborvitaes or another evergreen along our back fence that I look out and see all winter. I pray they do well here in our area. I'm desperate for evergreens! Thank you for sharing and encouraging and inspiring. Many of us need it right now -- along with some drenching rains. God Bless you and your sweet family!

I, too, reached the “ready to give up” state this summer, though my situation is really different from yours. I had an operation, a small one, in early July, but I had to avoid exertion and even bending over for several weeks. That was just the time of our big heat wave here. So much died and I felt like throwing in the towel, but with the passage of several weeks I am feeling a little bit optimistic, and I hope that your bruised gardening instinct will recover as well.

Challenges will provide new opportunities 🙏 I planted some north poles in my yard between my backyard and equipment yard for some separation and am really impressed so far! Apparently they stay more true to green where some arbs will brown a bit in the dead of winter.

My issue with planting in the fall is the fact that most nurseries do not have enough stock. It’s almost like Halloween is around the corner, and Christmas right behind!!! Just found some dwarf crape Myrtle bushes at Lowe’s because they are blooming now, and, of course, mums. But, it’s way too early for mums. I would prefer to see what I am going to buy first hand, but ordering on line looks more and more like the way to go, if you want something specific. Also found some allium which I am planting in some of the spaces where I had lilies. Can’t deal with the deer any more.

A big thank you. I see people saying spring is best planting time--- WRONG! We had a huge early drought heat event this year. Best way to avoid that problem is to give roots an early chance to start growing , which they love to do in the coolness and dampness which comes in fall. Scientists explain that the plant can now allocate more energy to roots in the fall because growth goes dormant above ground, while growth can go into hyperdrive in the fall underground, but it is invisible to us . This gives the plant a headstart!!!🙂🙂💚💯

Boy, is this video timely for me! We had some serious crop failure on shrubs we installed in June at our low country home here in SC. I think you have nailed down the major reason why we lost azaleas and other supposedly easy shrubs. Too darn hot!! The one choice we made that has embraced the heat of the summer is our abelia. What a beast that one is! But the rest are going or gone, even lorepedulum. Yuck! We will wait month or two before we start replacing. Thank you, Jenny!

Not fair to the plant to let the deer just decimate them. So, if I am going to keep them, they deserve some help. I am going to get the stakes in the ground over the winter so I am ready come spring.
