This Is Why YOU ARE Pearl 

Wait I didn’t even know we had to defend Pearl??? I thought we were all in agreement that it is an utter masterpiece and the best film ever created in the history of the world.

Both movies convey the horror of wanting to make something of your life and the terror of that potentially never happening, and all three movies convey three different time periods of this. X was about the horror of missing that time. Old Pearl lives in a sea of despair of losing her youthful beauty, her sex appeal, her time in life to achieve something. Maxine is making something of herself but lives in terror of becoming old, reflected in the fact that Pearl is played by Mia Goth herself in old age makeup. Pearl is about the horror of that time approaching. How one is looking for a means to escape and the mounting dread of each escape route from the life you are living going up in flames. I think MaXXXine will be about actually being IN that period of being successful. My guess will be that it's not all that it's cracked up to be, or it IS good but can be removed from you all the same, but I'm certain it will have SOMETHING to say about the matter the way the last 2 films did.

The thing of Pearl for me is that at some level, she's a little bit relatable. Yes she's kinda crazy, yes she has a lot of problems BUT at the end of the day she only wanted to be seen and understood and wanted to persue her dreams as an artist but never had the right opportunities for it, something that can also be observed in X with maxine, who has sort of the same ambitions that pearl had. I'm really looking forward to see how they're going to wrap their stories up and connect them in the third movie.

I like to think the reason he stayed speaks to the fact that he was in war and *also* killed people. Obviously not in the same way as Pearl. But I think they probably went beyond bonding over it and ended up encouraging each other to cope in this brutal way we see in X. You can tell by how they kill in X. Howards is usually with a gun or weapon that keeps him a bit removed. Pearl's is very intimate (stabbing) it's VERY intimate and lines up with her characters' desire to still want to connect with someone while she's indulging in the urge to kill; it's about feeling good. Also the timeline of how the 1918 pandemic literally traumatized everyone and brought out the worst in humanity (war and normalizing mass death of some of the worlds most vulnerable during the pandemic inspired a lot of Nazi's cruelty towards the disabled populations. Like how Pearl's Dad was treated throughout the entire movie, that's how the disabled were treated then and still to this day bc of eugenics.) I was a fan of how the pandemic was it's one character that shaped the worldview of Pearl in such a twisted way. Loved it.

the way i see howard is that he is was a twisted person in a different level. mindy even mentions that he could've skipped the war but CHOOSES to leave. he is salty when he kills that other guy fast forward in X, about being a marine and remember, after this movie he goes to another war and leaves pear alone yet again. he also knows he can't scape pearl or the violence inside himself. he does love pearl, that's why he leaves her isolated in the farm and doesn't want her around people bcs she is dangerous. after some time, i also think he accepts that she is going after other people to have sex and kidnaps them for her, just like it was the plan in X. they match, that's why he stays.

the end of her dance perfomance always gets me bc the only thing I can hear is "no emma stonee, please emma stone" with an aussie accent

I think it’s safe to assume fantasizing about life on the farm with Pearl was the bright thought that got Howard through the war, and he also likely came home with severe PTSD, not to mention how beautiful he thought Pearl was. So him staying with her and ultimately contributing to her murderous rages, isn’t that surprising when imagining how this war torn man would’ve responded coming home to the aftermath that he did. It also sounded like he probably wasn’t that big of a fan of his family, wanting to leave the city riches for hard work on the farm, so escaping the world to live in delusion with Pearl is also tenable

11:34 so I looked it up Pearl’s age and during the influenza pandemic she is currently 16, in X she’s 77. So yea, I too didn’t pick up that the dude was trying to groom her and get her to be in illegal adult films.

There’s not a day I don’t think about the X trilogy. Ever since I saw those two movies, I just fell in love with every detail of it,especially the connections between Maxine and Pearl and the constant fear of not being able to achieve your dreams

Did Pearl's mom keep her from going anywhere to protect the world from her sociopathy or did her mom keep her on the farm as punishment? Pearl's mom isn't fond of her own daughter and has a cynical outlook on life. She probably wanted more kids but her husband got sick and ruined her life plans so she wants to stifle Pearl. Pearl is disturbed but maybe she would've stopped at killing animals if she'd been allowed to live her dreams. Notice she only kills things as a way of enacting her will on a world that allows her very little control.

Honestly seeing Pearl’s mother, no wonder Pearl had issues and her mother out here blaming Pearl for her doing what she does to the animals but she threatened her husband 😅 takes one to know one mama Pearl lol. Anyway not defending Pearl but that part is so annoying to me

I was late to the Ti West train, but I am all on board for MaXXXine. I want to see what he can do with the 80's. I enjoy the technicolor Wizard of Oz vibes in Pearl, and how Pearl is just completely insane - running on so much self confidence she's gonna explode if people don't adore her 🙃

The movie is brilliant and the change in tone and genre compared to the original is refreshing as it's not a horror movie. I'll admit that I missed that he wanted Pearl to star in his films as well as I just thought that he wanted to sleep with her.

Wait there are ppl who don’t like Pearl? Ik it’s not as good as X imo but it’s so good still great film being more disturbing than scary. It’s a great prequel with some great acting from the new legend in horror that is Mia Goth. Maxxxine is currently being called a who dunit slasher which is very exciting so hopefully it’s good or even better than both X and Pearl to be seen as one of the best horror trilogies ever.

Howard likely survived because Pearl partially accepted her life as it was( i say partially because Howard implies in X that other guests had come and "tempted" her when he kills Kid Cudi. When she saw these others, she likely saw them as possessors of a life on the outside she so desperately wanted and because of that she desired them whether to kill, seduce (to feel "special") or trap the way she did Jenna). Maxine was not only special in that she was played by the same actress and a direct reflection of Pearl physically, but Maxine was also running from a strict and traditional life she felt bigger than (The church guy on the Tv in X was Maxine's father).

Pearl is a sad character. I see myself in pearl.she spent her whole life in that isolated farm which in itself will drive anyone crazy. Her mother isn’t understanding of her and only cares about herself. I understand the mother had a lot of responsibilities but talking out your anger out on your daughter is crazy.on top of that her husband isn’t there for her . Her father is sick. Sure she’s crazy and there are no excuses for her behavior, but anyone that would have experienced all of those events would never be a normal person. At the end she was just a sad lonely woman with an idealistic dream she would never achieve.

As an Austrian living there and speaking and hearing German all the time I just have to say : the German accent of the mother is so convincing and impressing. I sound like that when talking English. A lot of times a fake German accent is so bad it's insulting but this is so accurate.
