The day has finally come - Emily Timmons, the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources - has declared her candidacy for governor. And while Governor Johnson was hoping it would not come to this, she is not surprised and has something planned to compete with the news - Spasm Electronics intent to build a new factory in Magnolia County. One resident doesn't seem particularly impressed by either announcement or either candidate....
In this episode, we're going to focus on one Signature Building - Switchon. We'll build slowly, giving the asset the respect it deserves as a major regional employer. This means that we'll turn it into a campus, not just plop it on a roadside. We'll also build complimentary uses nearly and hopefully show you why building slower can be better.
In addition, We'll also learn about how the electrical grid works in Cities Skylines 2 and build many farms and rural subdivisions. And near the end, we'll make some fixes based on YOUR feedback.

I just downloaded CS2 but everytime that I play and try to place roads my screen goes yellow and thats the same with water pipes. Also I cant download mods off the Thunderstore. Is there anyway that you can help me

For the Electronics factory, I regularly drive past Intel in Oregon and they have quite a massive substation on what basically is a campus of buildings. Worth looking at the area and fleshing it out

Since Switchon is a tech firm, I feel like a Solar Array would be a great fit for the campus! Solves your power problems and you can export the extra electricity via the nearby HV lines.

I propose the large lake near the factory to be named “Minneikaphyu”, after the Lakota words “minne” (lake) and “icahpe-hu” (cornflower), the lore being that the occasional flooding of the lake’s banks resulted many cornflowers blooming in the damp soil. Name me #1 could be “Cornflower View” and Name me #2 could be “Kaphyu Junction” (knowing the settlers they’d probably butcher the names).

Depending on the type of electronics being developed and produced, you might see an extremely dense, tall wall of trees facing those farms. The trees would be low pollen, low detritus species. The reason is that they act as a dust filter that helps keep the factory air easier to keep as clean as possible.

It doesn’t seem impossible for transit service to exist to such a large employer. In East Idaho we have the Idaho National Laboratory which employs about 6000. It runs shuttle buses to all the towns in the area for the workers because it is located in the middle of nowhere. Keep in mind that Idaho is a very rural and (unfortunately) not transit oriented state, but still this exists. It would be very cool to see a similar motor coach service run to the electronics factory in MC.

Assuming I'm correct and the SwitchOn is based on the Gigafactory or something similar, it DOES have multiple buses for multiple surrounding towns. (Source: I work there) Pretty much the same as you said, more or less.

Hello Phil! In the spirit on the upcoming election season, it could be a fun idea to set up a RU-vid poll where your viewers (citizens of Superior State) can vote for the next Governor! Also, if there are any proposals for new developments, perhaps on occasion you can incorporate votes as an interactive way of engaging with the narrative and lore of the series.

I would really reconsider that aggregate mine, electronics production is very sensitive to movement, seismic blasting nearby would be a major detriment to the factory. Likewise generally you need a lot of other production nearby to be cost effective (think shenzen) so I'd consider the other industrial uses in the area.

@Invalid_eSports i was thinking the same, not only from dust but potentially harmful water runoff after rain (from diesel and chemicals needed to run the machinery), which would then likely go into the lake there, creating even more environmental hazards and make any nearby bore water or underground water deposits toxic and unsuitable for farming. I also live in an area with a lot of farms, and the only quarries nearby are over 5km away from us, the only 'farm' near them is a small cattle farm. The most prevalent industry in our more immediate area is forestry (huuuuge pine plantation less than a kilometre away from our house). Which also benefits the farmers cause they use sawdust and mulch on the farms and for compost. Our farmers would fight tooth and nail to keep any form of mining at minimim of 1-2km away from them. Also a lot of farmers here would be pushing for better highway or road access to minimise the maintenance and upkeep of machinery (bloody potholes), and keep any potential accidents down. Even if it meant a small portion of their property was bought by the department of main roads. They'd also likely ask for better public transit because it brings in workers that dont have cars, such as foreign workers.

Not sure if you saw the other comments, but a flood video would be great. The houses on the river bank are not built to withstand an overflowing river. Also erosion exists, thus, the land is very loose. I live in Illinois, flooding happens often.

Thank you! I really like Magnolia County. I want to share some information from around the world: In Turkey, most factory workers usually don't drive to work, and many of them don't even have a car. Instead, companies help their workers get to their job by giving them transportation as a bonus. Companies either use their own buses or hire transportation services to pick up and drop off workers. These buses follow routes like regular public buses and stop at specific places to pick up workers. This way, companies use their valuable land for production (in Turkey, industrial zones are generally very valuable) instead of using it for parking. Also employees can save money and time by using these buses instead of their own car. For example, they can read or sleep in the bus instead of driving.

I believe large companies in India offer the same kind of service to their employees. However in France, where I live, they usually don't because public transportation is often quite good and reliable. And I feel that in North America, where Magnolia County is supposed to be, this doesn't exist either even though public transportation is not up to European standards but just because almost everyone owns a car.

To be fair, some construction equipment are massive. I drive a tractor scraper(the real “terraforming tool”) and they are huge but I’ve also operated huge loaders to move minerals and other equipment that could definitely be bigger than a barn.

Aggregate mines tend get plotted below the surrounding ground level and then surrounded by dense bushing and or a knoll. Also a factory of that size and that isolated would have easily been able to subsidize their own solar field with the local governments.

My favorite part of this episode is the little neighborhoods and farms you placed between the city and the new community. I grew up in rural NC and that's exactly how my town/county was. We have one HUGE employer (a military base) just outside out of town, with a few miles of farmland, small subdivisions and houses directly on country roads separating our town and the base. Great episode Phil!

It would be cool to see some town names based on French words given how prevalent the French were in the area. Some suggestions Rivière (river), Aulne (alder tree), Collines (hills), Fluer (flower). All of these are just from google translate so not to sure about the translations.

I find adding realistic (vast) amounts of parking to be great for storytelling. As you've done previously in your series' - plopping lots of parking in the first instance, but later on, replacing empty or unused parking with commercial/offices really adds to the lifespan of areas that could otherwise be "plop + forget".

Something worth considering might be putting a line of trees, sound barrier, or even just a guardrail on the stretch of highway next to the football stadium. Seems like something there could be some concerns about, such as stadium lights blinding traffic at night, or having child recreation right next to a highway with no barrier in between.

I think the only thing that seems moderately unrealistic is having a giant aggregate facility in the center of a bunch of farms. Those facilities kick up a ton of dust and that dust would carry and coat all of the plants leading to reduced yields and lower quality products overall. Just some food for thought

As a truck driver I see it all the time out in the Midwest and in the Northern and Western plains as well as in Texas. It is not uncommon. You also have to understand that many of the farmers have least the lands mineral rights to these mines and plants in order to make money as well. The fact that their crops close might suffer a tad, is made up for in the prophecy make from the lease of the mineral rights. And to be quite honest, these types of areas actually seem to coexist fine. However this aggregate mine seems too big for the area and not to realistic looking

On the parking, that employee count could include 4 shifts and employees that are remote like sales reps., making your count more accurate. Half the time I don't even show up in the office :)

"Name me #2" could be Columbia Heights. It was the last neighborhood in DC I lived in before moving to Logan Circle. I think the hillside could match the "heights" part of it.

This is my first time commenting on this channel, even though I've been watching for a few years now and never missed an episode of Magnolia County! This is so amazing! It's also so damn cool to see the Signature Buildings coming into play in a realistic fashion! Are you planning on using that Service Station signature building at all, since you were looking into it for a while in earlier episodes. Other than that, though, so, so, so happy to see how things are shaping up! The storytelling is easily 10/10, and the building... look, you're the best Cities: Skylines player I've ever had the pleasure of watching, and there's some strong competition there! I can't wait to see how things keep going, this series is amazing!

Regarding the "scale issue" with the mines... based on how enormous these machines are in real life, I actually don't think there is an issue, it's just that those kinds of machines are absolutely massive.

How about "Town of Spasm"? Hershey, PA was founded as a factory town for it's workers at Hershey. Maybe the Town of Spasm is a factory town for it's workers. Up in Bailey, how about "Town of Oxbow", for the oxbow in the river.

Really enjoying the story and intros! Great build as always. It always amazes me how much industrial uses spend on landscaping. It's great to see but is still surprising.

Always enjoy your videos and love the story that goes with each episode. It makes each episode feel focussed and important. One thing I would like to see is a tourist spot with some of the more unique buildings and show us how to adjust transport effectively to bring the area to life.

love the meta-story! I've been goin back and watching Verde Beach and it's the big thing missing in early episodes. You have a little of it with the naming, but this whole thing w/ Chuckles and so on is awesome.

If I were an employee at Spasm I would love to have a tiny manmade pond next to the pavilion. This could boost the view a lot and people are gonna love it. I think there’s a mod available to add water source to the map :)

Oh hey, something I'm actually familiar with! I live in an area with a couple mega-corp campuses, the types that employ well into the quad digits, and a couple things where your implementation diverges from reality. First, is that the campus footprint is *much* larger than you have here. Not only would there be way more parking, but there'd be multiple buildings (like could be modeled with industrial and offices in-game) spanning the campus surrounding the main one, with walking space in between (much like a college campus) and various security checkpoints, maybe even some on-campus transit. Second, the campuses *really* try and stay hidden from view. Of the two in my area, one his a landscaped hill surrounding the entire thing (like a hollow square-shaped hill around the entire block) so it's impossible to see inside of the block at all, and the other has big lines of trees and forests blocking any type of view. To actually see the tech company at all, you have to actually go into the campus itself, otherwise it's near invisible. The real-world footprint would probably be about 5 or 6x the size it is here, probably a tad smaller than the university you built earlier in the series. That's at least compared to the ones in my area, which I'm not sure how many they actually employ and might actually be *much* larger than the 1500 of the one in-game, so maybe not entirely applicable.

I don't have a name for a district in particular, however I want to suggest it anyways. If you're planning on making one of the small local developments into a more metropolitan area, perhaps a transport hub from Bend to the Spasm Electronics building, may I recommend the name 'Lilydale'? It's the name of a town in Victoria, Australia, roughly 30km out from Melbourne. The reason I mention Lilydale, is that in the early 1920s it was a small town with a few townhouses and stores down Main Street, with a railway passing through ~30 years prior, but now It's developed so much, and it's amazing to see the sprawling suburbia and the new station design, that's all, but this series is one of my favourites, and a must watch for me, keep it up!!

Love your videos! I Work for an electrical provider. A large factory of this scale would at least have a dedicated "low voltage" line, or even a "high voltage" line and a transformer. Keep up the awesome work!

25:17 While you were cleaning up the roads on the new shopping mall, I think that Park lane could use an alignment (with complex curve tool) with the intersection into the mall. That way you would avoid a staggered intersection.

hey CPP, with such a large facility, at least at least here in South Africa and Mozambique (where i am from originally), although in a rural setting, they usually build a town or large scale village attached to it (or nearby) which will sustain a workforce for the facility, cutting expenses such as commute times, schooling, shopping - with the already built up shopping centre, etc in order to attract and house the employees nearby. but besides that thank you for such an awesome wholesome channel. The story telling is beyond awesome. and chuckles for President.

As a central Ohio resident, who not infrequently drives past the future site of that big Intel plant, I have to say this all looks very familiar. There are a lot of high tech facilities in the area on what were very recently farm fields, so surrounding the factory with farms was a good idea. The roads around the factory remind me a lot of Beech Road (a road with numerous data centers located on it) with the trees on the sides and the green space between the road and the factory. A decade ago that road was just a little 2 lane country road, like the other roads you didn’t upgrade. I can see in the future some of those smaller roads getting upgraded and some of the farms replaced by more industry.

Thought it would be fun to continue a theme going off of the chair in Chairity Island. Looking up some synonyms I landed on French - #5 Escritoire, #3 Carnet, #4 Lumière - so it goes chair -> desk -> notebook -> lamp (light) from Chairity up to the university.

Some mining dump trucks are absolutely insanely huge! Look up the BelAZ 75710. It's capable of hauling 450 tons of material and is the largest in the world. Of course, it's manufactured in Belarus and primarily only used in Russia...

There are no scaling issues with the excavator. You should check out how massive some excavators and dump trucks can be, especially in quarries and similar environments. For example, the Caterpillar 6090 FS is a hydraulic mining shovel that weighs around 1,000 tons and has a bucket capacity of 52 cubic meters. It’s designed to load gigantic haul trucks like the Caterpillar 797F, which itself can carry up to 400 tons of material.

I always put bushes by paths too. I think it has something to do with how jarring the transition from the grey path to green terrain is, it just doesn't look natural without something to distract from it.

I personally would love to see Gehlar Road still be added, but I did notice there isn't a ton (if any) of roads NAMED "road" or "way" in the build, lots of streets and lanes with a couple of Blvds mixed in. Could you make a new subdivision that focuses more on the "road" or "way" naming convention? You could have the names be named after different types of the same animal, similar to what you did with the bird streets in Myrtle Park. Perhaps different types of snakes (Cobra Road, Python Way, Milk Snake Road, etc) or deer (Whitetail Deer Road, Reindeer Road, Redtail Deer Way, etc.) If you go with the deer naming convention, you could even name one of the towns "Deerwood"!

38:21 For name me #6, I think it should be called Zailey because it’s the rural part of Bailey and the name similarity would cause both unity and rivalry between the towns. And for the lore It should be two sisters discovered and explored the region but fought over who it would be named after (don’t ask me why they didn’t do their last name) and they claimed opposite sides of the region. Edit: Maybe for #7 it should be called Midley because it’s in the middle (geographically) between Zailey and Bailey and it has the “ley” suffix. Edit 2: I’m sorry for the edits I promise this is the last one but I think #8 should be called Kaboom District assuming the company that operates the factory is called Kaboom ( the company is rivals with spasm even though the industries are semi-different )

For the high voltage line across the river, its not unreasonable that they'd tie the lines in to the existing rail bridge (with additional isolations) rather than having pylons in the water. If they did have to have pylons for a dedicated crossing, could they be the enlarged +10m pylons to give that extra bit of height for the river crossing. You can also use selective high pylons to smooth the wores' journeys into steep valleys.

@5:50 roads not matching up is due to which tile you had purchased and used at the time. You can only draw in roads on the inside of a purchased tile. then later when you buy the tiles surrounding, your new grid could be on the opposite side of the dotted border line. IT's fine becasue i see country roads have a jog at intersections all the time. 😃

For Village number 3, was thinking Uhrichsville or the rivers name. If the river is named, it’s spacing my noggin atm. In my neighboring city, it’s historic downtown is the old village of Willamette named form the river and falls.

I know I’m a bit late for this, but as someone that lives in an area a lot like this, I have a bit of a tweak for you, that being the rural subdivisions. There…isnt really much “subdivision” to the layout out here. Really all the subdivisions are is a single road branching off a Jeffersonian-like grid with houses on it. No roads branching off of them and gridding into others, just houses. And that’s one subdivision. Plus…the roads are paved out here. They aren’t always marked, but they are paved.
