Sustainable, yes. Just like sustainable agriculture where you still eat the broccoli without running out of it. In terms of killing whales and how you feel about it is a different discussion.

15 years ago I was lucky enough to visit these islands and was blown away by their beauty and nearly untouched glory. While up on a high and foggy hill I plucked a fist full of sheep's wool from the ground (sheep were spread across the slopes, grazing at their leisure) and twisted into a piece of yarn. That wool is one of my favorite souvenirs from that trip. Thank you for this wonderful video which took me back there again! You made me realize it wasn't romanticized memories I have - it really IS as fantastic as I recall.
@Eldjarn86
@Eldjarn86 Год назад
Unknowingly, you also did our national bird a favour. The shed wool can get entangled in the legs of them, making flying difficult for them, and a bird that loses its ability to fly, will die.

Thanks so much! We wanted to explore more of the local cuisine, but it was hard since there just weren't many restaurants when driving around. In Tórshavn all the "nice" restaurants weren't especially Faroese, but more just overpriced and decent food.

Sustainable to kill 2000 of a population of 800k? 🤣 So you went diving to count them? Back in the days cannibalism was also a tradition. So we also have to keep on with that? We got so many food sources, even the faroes... Why not using the whales for whale watching?

As a faroese citizen I know that Denmark gives us an annual payment of around 600 million dkk. If we would be detacted from Denmark this amount would lead to an increase in taxes which are already higher very high. Almost all of the youth go to Denmark to get an education as well.

Wow, guys! I watched the video of your ferry ride to the island, and that was good, but you have outdone yourselves with this video. Most enjoyable video. We are going in mid-August 22, and I learned a thing or two. Bummer about the mood in Saksun. That is on our list as well. We will be doing some kayaking in Tjørnuvík, which might be the highlight of our trip. For me, at least. Your video was informative about a great many things. Great to see you meet up with family. That must have been grand. Your dad seems like a great guy. Mother as well. Great job editing. Silly question and I think I know the answer, but why did you choose to speak mostly English instead of Danish in the video. Takk fyri

This brings memories, went there last year. You guys were lucky, there were far far more tourists when we went. So yeah, some of the local's reticence for tourists is totally understandable. We had waffles at the same guy in Tjornuvik :) and went to Drangarnir with Saviour. Small world :) We couldn't communicate with locals as good as you, since we don't speak danish, but it's nice to see from your video that they are nice and warm people. I would definitely return someday, though I totally agree the prices are a major inconvenience. Thank you for the video! Btw also love your home place, Madeira. Been there twice, it's an absolute heaven :) Cheers!

I’m from Tórshavn, but have lived in Aarhus since 2009. Even though I understand that people don’t want to be overrun by tourists, like is currently happening in Saksun, they’ve always had a reputation of being very unwelcoming of visitors. Even Faroese visitors wanting to see the natural beauty of the place. I remember going there as a kid in the late 90’s, when tourists weren’t really a thing in the Faroes. One local guy didn’t say a word to us and literally just opened his fence so his horses would come and run around us and act threatening and territorial with us. I was just a little kid who was already afraid of horses, and this nothing to alleviate that fear lol. Anyway, we just left, because we clearly weren’t welcome there. There are just certain places there that are really locally loyal, most often majority owned by one or a couple of families, where they control almost everything that is happening in the area. They own many of the houses and rent them out to locals and own the majority of the land as well. Keep in mind, most of the land is privately owned. Other similar places like Saksun in this regard is Runavík and Kollafjørður, last I knew. I don’t really keep up with local gossip and politics anymore, so I can’t be sure if it’s still like this, lol.

I've never really felt like I didnt belong over by Saksun having been at the beach several times before the gate was set up but then again we went for the beach directly all the time and not really into where they all live. Also having lived in Kollafjørd for 2 years (2011 - 2013) I never felt not welcome, the few people we typically would get into contact with in our immediate area were all nice people.
@Unknown-vq5co

I do know that many places charge money to be able to get to these beautiful places because it's all private property from the people and there was problems of trash laying around from people visiting and the damage the property can get from people stepping on it all the time. So i can understand people not being so welcoming but at the same time i don't understand. A lot of the small towns have older generations who often can only speak faroese and danish and barely any english. So i know some older generations would rather ignore having a conversation with someone who was english. But if the tourist or a local spoke faroese or danish it doesn't surprise me if they still ignored. It's usually the older smaller towns, where you usually meet the older generations that aren't as welcoming. But otherwise most people would gladly have a conversation or help anyone in need. It also depends which island you're on also. :)

I have to make a comment on what you say about Saksun. Saksun has always been a focus area for tourism, but a few years ago it really took off. There are thousands of tourist there every day and the locals are sick and tired of it. Tourism authorities won’t accept there is a problem, as the heavy pressure on the area is taking its toll - on nature and people. The road to Saksun isn’t built for this heavy traffic, the town itself not ready (for instance there are no sewage and no toilets). In desperation they made a toll gate to prevent people to walk on the beach, which is damaged beyond repair already. And of course, some tourists are nice, but many are incredibly rude. Flying drones to the windows of private homes, walking on graves in the graveyard, well, even some have cooked dinner in church! It is so incredibly rude and inconsiderate. The farmers of Saksun are the victims of tourism. So incredibly sad - and there is no understanding for them. It is really funny, that you mention the difference in mentality between faroese and danish people, because one of the prejudice we in the Faroes have against danes is that they always talk about money! And you prove the prejudice so beautifully! 🤣
@jules_laurent
@jules_laurent 2 года назад

Nicolina Dahl. And just like that at prejudice danes have against faroese people is showing to be true. Faroese people cant stand to get the obviouse pointed out, it IS way to expensive on the Islands. And these two are travelvloggers, which means that followers expect to hear what the prices are. Its primitive and also typical faroese to make degrading remarks, just because you dont like the facts. Not everyone is blessed to live in a country where there is high imployment rate. Am a faroese myself living i Denmark.

Look, I know, it is expensive to live in the Faroes, I do live here and it is obvious. That said, these people talk about the difference in mentality and you can’t deny that they talk a lot about money. I don’t degrade them by stating this obvious fact!

@@nicolinadahl4698 And thats what travelling vloggers do, so nothing new and surprising there.Some followers find travelling inspirations by watching these kind of videos and do like to get info about prices.
