Update:
I'll leave my original thoughts below. Otherwise, see the pinned comment. It is NOT sinking.
Original:
This isn't good news at all :( Is a row of columns on the Hanford Viaduct sinking? I drive under this viaduct every day on the way to and from work. When I do, I notice a little lean. I just pass it off as I'm going crazy or an optical illusion. A few days ago, a commenter one on of my RU-vid videos mentioned that they saw it, too. Maybe I wasn't going crazy. I decided to fly the drone out there this morning with a focus on this row of columns. I think they are sinking. I'm not crazy. I can find nothing in the news about this.
I put a red line with DaVinci throughout the entire video. There's no audio to annoy you as you may pause and rewind to decide for yourself.

So, I have some good news rail fans. Remember how I said that I sent this video to KMPH? Well, they finally got back to me this morning. They investigated. This is what they told me "Hi Jason, We checked into your drone video with HSR. What you are looking at is a gradience difference for drainage, not subsidence." So, it's not sinking. I'm glad I was kind of wrong :-) The dip is there but it's intentional

Thank goodness! A planned elevation change phew

These kinds of structures are designed to settle. Settlement is inevitable when you put something heavy on the soil. They'll even intentionally build them months or years in advance so they have time to settle and even out before being put into service. It only becomes a problem if it settles in a way that wasn't accounted for in the design, and even then, it's generally fixable. You can't wholly predict or model natural processes like that in advance, and not getting it perfect every time is part of building things.

As one commenter said, it looks like only 1 row of transverse supports is the cause. But sinking, most definitely is happening. In which case, 'up she comes'. They are 'lucky' it's only one row!

Huh, I think it’s only that one row of pillars luckily, but I wonder what the the authority has to say about this

It is very similar to when Honolulu rail was being built, where the guideway was initially crooked, but was later adjusted. Even though it is different, the fact that the concrete wasn’t poured makes it similar. - m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kGmYYNC_g5c.html&pp=ygUdSG9ub2x1bHUgcmFpbCB1bmV2ZW4gZ3VpZGV3YXk%3D

The entire valley is sinking, 28 feet since the 1920s. Yes, it's going to be a problem for a high speed train.

Yeah, it dips, there, but do we know if it's really sinking? Maybe it's just that they haven't finished working on it, yet.

They are still working on it right now ... feverishly ... on this exact row of columns lol. Like I said, I drive under this every day, going to and from work. How much sinking is too much to where they have to tear the whole thing out is a mystery to me :)

Hopefully someone from the HSR will watch this and comment if its sinking or not.

@@timeforbeans I sent the video to KMPH. That might get us some answers ... Might also get me Jeffrey Epsteined 😂

they can fix this like others do when something like this happens
@jasondroninaround
@jasondroninaround 24 дня назад
@@cadespencer6320 yeah, if they can stop it from sinking, they can use the ballast to keep the track straight but if that thing keeps sinking indefinitely it's going to be a constant problem in the future

Are we certain it isn't just an optical illusion caused by the wooden access walkway and railings being kind of randomly up and down on that side?
@jasondroninaround
@jasondroninaround 23 дня назад
@@peoriavideosltd6822 That's what I used to think. That's why I brought the drone out there specifically to film this row of columns. Then I put that red bar in there with the video editor. In case you didn't know. You can go forward or back one frame at a time in RU-vid with the period and the comma. It may not be that big of a deal. It may be within toleration or they might be still working on it. It's just something that I noticed.

Not to worry. This section will be deteriorated well before the whole project is completed.

It shouldn't be a big problem in the big picture. They can adjust it. If needed long-term, they can install a new set of pillars next to these and drill them deeper in this particular area.

That's the same problem they had 50 years ago building I-5 on the west side. The soil over there is in a rain shadow from the Coast Range mountains. Every time the water truck went by on I-5 construction the soil sank several feet. All in all the I-5 project on the west side was finished five years behind schedule.
