As a Japanese person, I was really surprised to hear that Dhaka has a metro system based off of Tokyo's, or honestly a metro system in general. Thanks for covering it!

Japan has also provided loans to Namma Metro in the city of Bengaluru, India. I am not sure how much Japan was involved in planning/construction of the metro itself but they have financed the metro in our city.

As a American-Bangladeshi I can say this metro rail is one of the biggest projects in history taken by the Govt. of Bangladesh. Another one is Padma Bridge. I'm really happy to see my beloved country continuing to prosper. But corruption, inflation and lack of transparency in the authority system, freedom of speech is pulling back all these prosperity. But Asia will dominate soon... Real soon. Thanks for covering this story.

As a Jakartan, the scenes shown in Dhaka are incredibly familiar (special thank you for showing some of the MRT scenes) because our MRT is also built by Japan (you mentioned it too lol), heck the Dhaka metro station at the beginning is almost the exact same as ours's above ground MRT stations. I just wish that they build more MRT lines faster because damn the expansions are slow and quite expensive :(

@@agungheryadi4226 Yes i know which is why i said it's slow. Considering that it's just one line extension (the last extension of that line, Phase 2B will be completed in 2031) and they're considering speedrunning the "Phase 3" line that stretches for 84 km, even when completing a 25ish km line takes decades. Also the 2027 extension is only to Harmoni won't you believe it, to Kota it's 2029. I just hope that after the slow motion of the NS line they will get much faster

Being from Sri Lanka, I'm really happy that people from Bangladesh, particularly the citizens of Dhaka, are fortunate enough to have access to modern commuter facilities like this. In Sri Lanka, there was also a plan to introduce a metro system with Japanese assistance, but unfortunately, the project fell victim to political corruption.

I was in Jakarta not too long ago, and the Japanese are also involved in their MRT system. There's only one line yet, but it's wonderful, partly above ground and partly underground. I took the MRT dozens of times. Anyway, great channel... nice to see someone so passionate about subway systems. They're awesome :).

Yes, we have our metro system up & running that's great for the commuters. But i don't see whats to be proud of, we didn't built it Japanese did (they funded it also). Apart from construction and labor nothing is done by our people. Even the feasibility studies are done by foreign consultants. I also doubt our people in charge of the metro system can maintain it properly in long run.

Despite living in Dhaka myself, I haven't had the privilege of using the Metro once because I live all the way down in Baksi Bazar. But once the 2nd phase of MRT-Line 6 is complete this October, I can perhaps use the Metro as much as I want. Also, how much are each tickets per person? And how long can you use one singular ticket?

Its the modern metro being made in India and can be seen in Kochi, Noida and Bangaluru. Dhaka metro is being done by Indo-Japan consortium.

Subway is not efficient in the US as it’s too spread apart and population density is low compared to India Japan China. What is crazy to think about is that China has the largest high speed rails in the world which was unthinkable just 20 years ago.

It’s great to see that Japanese railway technology is seeing a rise in popularity nowadays. Not only as someone who’s interested in Japanese railways, but also because a lot of the ideas that are put into building Japanese-style railway systems are just generally very beneficial to cities around the world. Such as intercompatibility and through-running with existing railway lines, high frequency and quality service, and just the generally clean stations which have extra essential touches such as platform-screen doors. As a Filipino myself, I can’t wait to see what’s in store and hopefully our train system will be able to catch up with the likes of Japan soon, because as it seems now it’s a shame how the government has pretty much only decided to develop the train network now. Just wish they could speed up construction though.

With great speed comes great undertaking, they're going to sacrifice some things if they would build thoe trains hastily. It's better if we build it steady and proper so there would be no possibility of error happening in between the builds.

@@czvsc954 I know, but these projects are taking way too long. And not to mention the various issues surrounding the construction of these lines, such as corruption. Take the aforementioned North-South commuter rail for example. Planning and initial construction was taken in the 1990s, it was then restarted in the 2000s, and demolished and restarted again in 2013, and is projected to start operations in 2028-2029. It's honestly mind-blowing to me how it's taking 3 decades just to build a single line(though other lines should also be able to be finished by that time). In the span of those 20 years meanwhile, our neighbours such as Thailand have managed to build an entire metro system from scratch, with only 2 lines remaining, and other expansion projects planned. By the time the North-South commuter rail is done, Bangkok's metro would be wholly complete. What makes it even worse is that government incompetence is the only thing that holds back construction and nothing else.

I was in Dhaka in 2006. It was some of the absolute worst vehicle traffic I have ever experienced, with the streets so clogged with traffic that it moved at a frustratingly slow pace. I am so happy to see that the people in Dhaka now have this metro line! I was also happy to see your mention of a system in Jakarta - another city with so much traffic that chokes its streets, especially since drivers do not respect the delineated traffic lanes.

Indonesia has also been importing older Japanese Trains from different companies for its KRL Commuter Services. It looks a little more spartan than these new subways though.

the concern about native engineers is quite legit. but a lot of bangladeshi engineers worked under the guidance of Japanese engineers in these projects. around a 100 from my university only and there are 10's of university graduates who get their job at these metro construction projects. hopefully they can learn and help build future metros and other projects from the Japanese. and lastly thanks to japan, they have been a true friend of ours

Taiwan, Indonesia, India, all friend nations of Japan, are taking the same approach to take time to brew domestic engineers. They're not illegally copying it like China. They are slowly digesting it. Out of three, Indonesia will be the first to build new trains domestically and may eventually sell them to other countries which include... possibly Bangladesh? Dhaka line is an extra special because it's the first metro line of the country. Japan and its companies are not doing this for temporary profit. They have never agreed to built any rails unless they see newly built rails will bring profit to both countries. So it's gonna be a win-win, mate! Looks like Dhaka line is going to be a bloodline and people's determination for their future growth. I'm very excited and fortunate to witness the eventual rise of Bangladesh together in this generation.

In argentina when the japanese funded and directed de electrification of the Roca Line in 1985, they've also build an training center and even took argentinian railway ingeneers to japan to study the ATS system and learn how the 25 kv system works (which was new in argentina at the time). So i would say it was a very constructive effort. The chinese on the other hand...

I think one of the necessary things when building a transit line of such scale is to rely on the expertise and knowledge of industry leaders. Part of why the USA and Canada keep dragging their feet is their seeming aversion to just getting external help for proper line planning and construction. The dependence that can be fostered is definitely a bad thing, but it's better to have people able to move around their cities and have sustainable architecture than drown in more highway lanes and road deaths, in my opinion.

@@thesenamesaretaken Especially those "Buy America" clauses, which wouldn't be so annoying if we had our own indigenous passenger trainset manufacturers. Which we unfortunately don't, most went out of business at the same time the US railroads went into decline during the 60s and 70s.

Greetings from Tokyo! I am racially Bengali but born and raised in Tokyo. Loved this clip and was a also good to see a few clips of Japanese lines like the Tokyu Toyoko line. Just FYI JTREC was called Tokyu Cars (owned by Tokyu), their build quality is great and they were the first maker in Japan to build a stainless steel train back in the late 50s!

I'm from Dhaka, who now calls Toronto home. I'm currently on vacation in Dhaka and I really see the difference the metro made. I understand you're from west bengal, but just look at Kolkata, one of the oldest cities along with Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai but still it's GDP, HDI etc are far below all other older cities. Dhaka is one city, much more dense. America is huge, and a lot wider, which is why cars are popular. It would be super tough to build a transit system where even rural communities are connected efficiently.

​@@noamkagan9019utter nonsense. City densities are very much comparable across the world, especially city cores, but cities like Dhaka have suburbs, even if not sprawling like the US. And rural areas rarely have such metro systems anywhere. We have solid rail and bus connections to nearby major cities. For example, the Indian state bus systems are some of the most easily accessible public transport especially for rural areas. Anyway, car dependency in some Village in Midwest isn't the same as car dependency within dense cities like LA or NYC. Disingenuous.

Specifically, spices fetched insane values in the European markets, almost as much as gold. The boom in international trade and the onset of industrial revolution quickly bought the prices crashing back to earth, and there went the so called 25% of world's GDP. Bangladesh's story is likely quite similar given that it was ruled by the Mughals as well.

This is happening to date. US and European countries now controlling media since the start of the Ukraine VS Russia war. Russian TV channels are not shown in Anglo European medias. The Bengal region was not always controlled by the Mughals. Time and again there were conflict between Bengal Subah and Mughals. Independent Nawabs of Bengal always loved their freedom. @@himanshusingh5214 Like everything else because China had a 15 year headstart in liberalization, rode the globalization wave and steamrolled public opposition to any infrastructure project or labour issues. Meanwhile India has none of that, and has a democracy on top that means elections can lead to new party coming to power and that new party can, purely out of spite, stall infra projects that were the darlings of the previous government (case in point: Maharashtra election led to delays in Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shinkansen line). India's metro rollout has only just begun.

Honestly the entire UK+Ireland is a complete disgrace when it comes to transportation infrastructure... our trains have done nothing to decline from world leading to barely functioning over the past 100 years, no metro systems are under construction, and barely any rapid mass transportation in the likes of trams are being built either, leaving us to cope with Covid-slashed bus routes. It really is pathetic and depressing for such great countries to fail so miserably at transportation, and worst of all I don't see it changing any time soon

Luas isn't perfect but its a start and the DART is canny, just a shame it doesn't reach the Airport. The real scandal on Iarnrod Eireann and NIR is the lack of a major line running from Derry down the west coast to say Carrick-on-Shannon & the lack of a line from say Newry along/down toward Monaghan & thence to Navan by one fork and Dublin; to Castlebar and then Galway by the other.

I actually used the Dhaka metro and let's just say it's amazing. The only problem is that the price for each ticket is a bit high but you can save time like hours traveling by metro so I don't see any issues. The road that usually took like 30 mins is now traversed with 5 mins. It really is amazing.

It's essentially a giant Prisoners' Dilemma - folks stubbornly refuse to switch to transit, and the authorities have no incentives to add new lines, nor increase frequency.

I am a regular commuter of metro rail in Dhaka. It saves around a hour every day than before for me. As Dhaka is a heavy traffic city, I believe, the metro system has impacted our thought process as well. I can now think of planning a lunch party at mirpur & come back to uttara within my lunch hour of office. It was a dream to come & go back from mirpur to uttara within an hour. now,its just a matter of 15 mins.

Because in Japan and India, most of the work is done inside the country. The construction is all done by local companies. In India the trains are manufactured by Medha, BEL, Titagarh wagons, Alstom, Siemens, Bombardier Locally.

For example, Indian Railways every year lays new tracks that are double the length of the entire Bangladesh Railways. That is scale. There are reasons for that, Bangladesh is a far more densely populated country than India or Japan. So land acquisition takes a lot of money, which make up a large part of the cost. Also Bangladesh doesn't have any technical knowledge about infrastructure projects like this, so we have to rely on outside help for a first couple of lines, whereas India and Japan have a lot of experience. Japan built Tokyo metro in 1927, so they have nearly 100 years of experience and India built its first metro 40+ years ago. Bangladesh is just a toddler compared to them

I would have agreed if this was a highway project or an intercity train. But this is a metro project, that would be built on prime property right within densely populated cities, no matter which country it is built in. Let me drop some solid numbers. Population density (people per sq km):- Dhaka, Bangladesh: 30,093 Surat, India: 27,439 Length of metro(km)/Cost of making the metro($): Dhaka Metro Line 6: $2.8 Billion for 11 km Surat Metro Phase 1: $1.5 Billion for 41 km That said, the project cost of Surat Metro might increase but land acquisition for phase 1 is already done. And even if it does increase, it will be nowhere near as expensive as Dhaka Line 6.

I am a Bangladeshi living in Toronto and crazy enough have worked on the Ontario Line and Metrolinx GO projects in Toronto. Great to see that my previous home city has a metroline and by 2030 there are going to be 5 more lines afaik. I am hopeful that by 2030 both Dhaka and Toronto will have metro lines that will be completely different from today’s lines.

I have spent a lot of time in Japan and am glad to see their train tech is being exported to these huge cities. I was recently in Taiwan and saw that the HSR (High Speed Rail) was exactly like the Shinkansen, except 1/3 the ticket cost. Thanks for the video.

Another thing worth mentioning though is that here in the Philippines is the Metro Manila Subway (Line 9) which is also funded by JICA. The newer rolling stock of our metro lines are also mostly from Japanese manufacturers. They have a good reputation when it comes to infrastructure development assistance especially compared to the Chinese have proven time and time again to become an unreliable partner (like the MRT-3 Dalian trains and the South Long Haul Project).

I live in Dhaka and travelling in metro for almost 3 months mostly everyday. I can say for sure it has improved the transportation system. I can now reach a part of the city in 10 minutes but otherwise I can not dream of reaching there in 2 hours!! That is a big leap!.

Japan is going crazy exporting its railway technology. Japan had a very big role in making Delhi metro what it is today. Its not only about financing but also The kind of expertise they brought ment that we learnt a lot about not only how do we build this system but also many other things i think for the first time there was a focus on construction safety in the country only because of japan. They havw since invested a lot in india's railway industry. They have financed a lot of metro systems, Western dedicated freight corridore, the HSR ofcourse and more. We can definitly do with more japanese engineering and planning spreading around the world. And as far as i have seen, they are usually pretty open to share knowledge. Though this might differ from country to xountry.

As a Vietnamese person, where my country receives lots of ODA funds from JICA to build infrastructure using Japanese equpiment and support, there is a very bad reputation for Japan. Most of Japan's projects has budget skyrocketed, and there are also many problems with the design as well as construction like you have said. Japan wants us to depend on them forever for their own benefits.

Otherwise they would be already be paid internally. No country chooses a dependency if it's possible without it. Therefore Japan ain't that bad to depend on. Just looking at the route map, that must be the best possible first metro line you could possibly build. Just straight up and down the exact centre of the city, and linking up to the main rail station.

You are spot on. I am from Dhaka. This metro route connect the heavily populated residential areas in the periphery with the administrative, business and education hub of the city center. Second phage of this metro line will be inaugurated in October, 2023. After that, half a million passengers will use it everyday. Eventually passengers movement in this metro route would climb to almost a million per day in near future.

I think Bangladesh desperately needed a decent metro track and system as a basis of their growth vector more than anything. I think they made a very very smart choice. With this, Bangladesh has secured "infinite supply of semi-latest used metro trains" at cheaper price until they can produce them by themselves which is, everyone would agree, probably more than 20 years away. Indonesia made a similar choice. If you look at Jakarta lines it's filled with retired Japanese rolling stocks everywhere. Recently they banned to import them in favor of yet-to-be-seen domestically made trains.

Nope, since Dhaka doesn't have effective and _integrated_ bus network to feed the metro, and the fare is still too expensive for most of the locals for daily use.

The new Sydney Metro system is great by the way. Once all the extensions on the current operating Metro line are completed, the line will be 112 kilometres long. In UK terms, that’s Reading to the Southend-on-Sea via London Liverpool Street.

Will you cover Turin? I was there some day ago and despite not being a huge city I think that there is an interesting public transportation system with a metro line (second in planning if I'm not wrong), trams, bus and trains with 4-5 stations and 2-3 under construction.

It's also not uncommon for Japan to offload old rolling stock to developing countries as foreign aid. They get some good PR while passing the buck with regards to scrapping those old trains. Many Japanese train otaku visit Indonesia, Thailand, etc., to ride trains that are no longer used in Japan.

As a car enthusiast, motorcyclist and public transport user that has been following this channel for a while, I think you should make a video on your thoughts on motorcycles. I think it's an important topic that a lot of urban channels tend to gloss over, since motorcycles give you the convenience of cars without being nearly as much of a nuisance for others

Note that this channel is focused on public transport, not on heavy fast moving individual vehicles that pose danger to pedestrians. He doesn't even talk about bikes which are a lot more aligned with good urban mobility than motorized vehicles.

@@f.g.9466 most commuter bikes weigh less than the average American lmao Bikes are more dangerous than cars to the rider for sure, but they;re far safer for pedestrians due to better visibility and being physically much smaller My point is that facilities such as park-and-rides servicing the suburbs could be so much better if everyone rode to them on a motorcycle rather than parking a tonne of steel in several square metres to carry one 70kg person

@@ratanvenkatesan5486 I'm glad you are aware that bikes are lighter and safer for pedestrians, that's why I said they are better for urban mobility. And that's why it doesn't make sense to push for motorcycles. Being better than cars isn't enough, motorcycles are still a lot more dangerous to pedestrians than regular bikes. I was just giving you a heads up that this channel is focused on *public transit* and hopes for livable cities where you can use good transit, walk and also bike. Usually he doesn't even do any deep dives into discussing bikes. I don't know why you'd expect emphasis on individual motorized vehicles, much less support for their use.

Thanks for featuring my City. The 2nd phase of MTR line 6 is going to open in October this year; making the length more than 20km. The third phase expansion will be completed within 2025 connecting to the cities main inter-city train station. Another five lines are planned to be completed within 2030. Total length of MRT system is planned to be more than 200 km. Dhaka can actually afford these metro systems with its huge population of 20M people and thriving economy.

Okay, now I have some major pet peeve on this project which you have glossed over. Dhaka is very close to Indian city Kolkata, close enough to have regular running train services in between those cities. Kolkata, as you know was first Indian city to construct a metro system. Now get this, Kolkata and Dhaka were part of undivided Bengal and share same language(not similar, they use same language as official language), the transfer of knowledge would be that much smoother. Also, Titagadh wagons, in Kolkata builds metro coaches, they would have saved tons of money if they imported from there. Now I wouldn’t have any problem if India had absolutely no involvement in their metro system, but Bangladeshi officials actually came to Delhi, India to learn the operations of metro. Why just not ask Indian companies to build the system in the first place? Who already have the Knowledge to operate an extensive system in same geography??

actually dhaka metro was built by L&T only, it was funded by japan while the trains were given by a chinese company, so technically Bangladesh taking help of 3 countries for building 1 metro system

It is Japanese soft-power. Japanese government gives interest-free loans for infrastructure projects and in turn, this generates contractual work for Japanese companies. The loans are paid back from the revenues accruing from the projects. It is a win-win and thoughtful approach that benefits Japan in the long term as well as the loan recipients in the near term. Contrast with China's approach that has ended with China only winning at the expense of their partners in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and elsewhere.. ;)
