May just be my speakers, but I prefer the E100S by quite a bit. The SX sounds very "muffled" to me, while the 100S sounds more open.

Same. My first thought was "Dark and muffled? Weird." But, I guess it really does depend on the sound you are going for. I have had my E100S for a few years now. I think it will be hard to beat.

Could maybe be just quality control…. I know audio Technica has really bad quality control with the at4040s , I have one that sounds like a telefunken 251 (cheaper model of course) and one that sounds almost identical to a Neumann u87ai , I compared them both and can say I basically have an u87ai that’s inside an at4040 lol

I hear the E100sx as being more balanced, with the E100s perhaps being a little more boosted in the presence region. I hear it in the S sound, which is more pronounced. Not too much but definitely noticeable. As for me, I go for darker mics with less boost in the presence region, but I'm recording myself playing horns not doing voiceover work.

Could be that they want to go for a more mid-forward sound instead of something prone to sibilance

I bought the E100S on your recommendation years ago and have been loving it. I'm sure each mic will have to be EQed and post-processed differently, but my initial impressions are that the SX sounds a TINY bit more natural, while the S sounds brighter.

The E100SX is undoubtedly darker - the E100S has a presence boost in the highs. It means it would probably needed to be tweaked in post, but I like the idea of a darker starting point; seems like it would allow for more flexible EQ'ing. This also reminds me of NT1 vs NT1A - with a slight role reversal, as the NT1 had a darker tone.

Found the E100S sounded a tad more airy but little bit more sibilant, the SX definitely a touch darker which tamed some of that sibilance. Pretty damn close in sound though, and of course every mic sounds good on Mike's voice.

Mike, I'm so glad you mentioned that you like to "burn in the mic"! I bought the E100Sx and the first recording I made on it (brand new, just hooked it up) I sounded like Darth Vader. I tried completely reworking my vocal chain, 100Hz roll off, etc. Nothing could clean it up. I thought it just didn't like my voice. I used it for a week to teach an online class, so about 30 hours of me talking into it, and tried recording again. Made all the difference in the world. I sound like me now. It's my first LDC, so I've got nothing to compare it to except the Shure SM58 that it's replacing, but I'm impressed.

Hi Mike, great video and I know how much you love the CAD. You cannot get them in Australia as far as I can tell from over two years searching so I jumped on Amazon and ordered the E100Sx. It was supposed to arrive Saturday 30 September but arrived yesterday, Wednesday 27 September. W-O-W. What a mic. I love it and have nicknamed it Mike delMic in honour of you. Thanks mate. I have run it through the Zoom H6, DBX 286 into the Scarlet 18i20, Rodecaster and Yamaha AG06. So far it sounds great on each. Got a few more mixers / interfaces to check out but to far it sounds great. Happy days and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for your ASAP intro and first observations of this microphone. I like the e100s better, i detect yes a tad dark/(warmer) sound with e100sx with a slight takeaway of pleasant and lively airiness that's present in e100s, and i also hear an ever so slight unpleasant sibilance at high-end with e100sx, as with e100s.

Interesting! Definitely darker, definitely sounds like it'd be worth comparing with the Austrian Audio OC18. I think they have a comparable sound profile in that regard.

Mike, BLESS YOU, man. You are loved in this space for good reason. Tested a few mics against my e100s (not quite 'the world', but still)... somehow I always go for the CAD! Even vs the beautiful Lewitt LCT 840 (not nearly as warm as I'd expected). e100s seems more balanced than TLM103 (slightly TOO sibilant often). The OC818 sounds dull in comparison, to me at least. Thinking of trying TLM 102 (less 'crispy' than its bigger brother?), LCT 540 or 640, and Rode NTK. I like the mix of bass and brightness without over sibilance (said everyone). That's basically the e100s, but seeing if anything can best it. Wondered if you had any thoughts on those, or others... ? (I'd consider more expensive Neumanns too...TLM67, U87, M.....). Cheers from LA.

You can definitely hear more hiss/esser on the E100S. That could be because the E100SX hasn't been broken in? Just speculating.
@annekedebruyn7797
@annekedebruyn7797 2 года назад
No this is because the E100Sx is mostly flat in the higher frequencies, a dip between 5-10khz with only a light air boost after 10khz. Mics barely need to be broken in time. This is what you'll get.

The SX as first impressions sounds a bit darker. Not in a bad way. It reminds me a bit of the Austrian Audio OC mics. EDIT: looked at the frequencycharts. The OC18 has a similar dip in the highs between 5k and 10k as the e100Sx. Seems like I was on the right track. Might be an interesting 'versus.'

Before someone reads my long analysis, I just want to sum this up as: Despite the E100SX SEEMING to be all wooly darkness and no light, there is actually simultaneously an odd sibilance boost in the air region. No, it's not harsh or cutting, it's just something that doesn't need to be there. The basic gist is: Keep the switch to flat if not using for live applications with no EQ available. Then in post, roll off low-end manually starting from 500k back to your liking, then boost 4k ever so slightly, a bigger boost at 8k, and then start rolling off either 15k or 16k and above gradually down, preferably with a Parametric EQ. Below for specifics repeated: The CAD E100 SX might be a bit dark out of the box, but as far as post-tweaking, this mic is just as good as its siblings...actually, it might be much smoother. That warmth when fostered properly during EQ, actually makes it preferable next to recordings of the same dialogue using my CAD E100 original. If you need something out of the box with no EQ with the SX, just hit the hi-pass and don't look back, for mixing: I keep it on flat, I gradually start rolling off the low-end from 500Hz back, then using a typical Graphic EQ in post, I give a 0.5db boost at 4k, about 1db boost at 8k (this is what's missing compared to E100s), and then I use a Parametric EQ to start gradually rolling off high-end frequencies starting at about 16k. I find that despite the wooly darkness of this mic, there is an odd "air" boost that needs to be rolled off. If you do those things, my god, I fucking love this mic. It is easily malleable and a pleasure to EQ, the signature CAD quality is still there.

Ya know, Mike, I've watched a heck of a lot of your videos. One might say all of them in fact, but I feel like you've never looked at Nady mics much. My first couple of "good" mics were from Nady. In fact I've still got this SPC 15 that was my gigging mic for well over a decade, and I think my first "recording" mic was an SCM 800 or 900. They were my first ribbon mic too, the RSM-1. I picked up another ribbon of theirs and a shotgun mic at one point just to play with it. Inexpensive stuff sure, but since that's a portion of what you look at on the channel I think it'd be worth looking at something in the future maybe.

This mic is almost scary cheap at $89 now. CAD is more known for low end products now. What are good options for RU-vidrs that want great audio, not tinnie, I have SM58 and focusrite at moment but pondering other mics. I have a sound devices 302 as well for preamp if needed but I like the Focusrite at the moment. Sub $300 range possible? Also want it to look good, not a fan overall of SM58 look at my desk. The podmic looks good but sound is meh. SM7B too big. Still E100sx? or something else? Want it off axis and not covering my mouth if possible as I do video too (no booth)

It's sad how over the years CAD has gone down hill with each and every incarnation of the E100. Now it looks (sounds) like they've finally hit bottom, even for Chinese crap. Interestingly however older models (even the E-100S) are now selling upwards of three times the original price. This just goes to show what happens to a company when the accountants & pen pushers overrule the engineers.

I hope this helps. Edit: At the point he's comparing these two mics from the same lineup, the differences (theoretically) shouldn't be night/day; it'll be a more nuanced difference that will take closer listening/monitoring. Rode NT1 vs NT1A's a solid example of this.

I like a mic that tones down the top end but this did sound a bit muddy on your voice. It would be interesting to hear Bandrew on it. I wouldn't say that the S is brighter because it is still smooth but it isn't muddy on your voice. If it's muddy on Bandrew's voice then that may be more definitive.
