Lancia Stratos is a story full of interesting events which are not common in average automobile development. It was actually created before Lancia even knew they wanted it. They only envisioned a successor of an ageing Fulvia for rally racing and an Italian carrozzeria studio offered them a potential design and car layout.

One of my favorites. My Dad an I built several Tamiya scale models of the Stratos, as a kid, an as a German guy born in America, Liking a Lancia was pretty high praise, for my old man. Keep putting out the good stuff, Visio.

One of these in Alitalia livery is certainly on my list of dream cars. A really good kit car or reproduction with a Moto Technique Ferrari V8 and a close ratio 6 speed instead of the Dino V6 would be better. I like the true to the original instead of the new recreation built on the Ferrari chassis much better. But at 6'2" I'm not sure I would fit. This an 037 in Martini livery and a blue, red or white Delta Integrale would be in the Italian section of my dream garage.

The 037 In Martini livery is one of the best automotive combinations in history. The Stradale road going version is exceptional and unfortunately very rare.

The Stratos has a very cool and storied history. And that Alitalia livery...so iconic!! It begs the question, however, how the FIAT x1/9 would have performed as a factory backed rally car had FIAT group not decided to only run the STRATOS ?? Makes me wonder...

We built an X19 for Rallycross using a Swiftune built Lancia Beta 1.6 twin cam (dry sump) via an adaptor plate to a Uno Turbo straight cut dog box with limited slip diff. We kept the McPherson struts all round but used our own design and built rose jointed wishbones as original very heavy and of course not adjustable. Brakes standard except better pads. Plastic removable roof replaced with welded steel panel. Boot lid and bonnet replaced by our own glassfibre copies to save weight. We shook the car down over three events, working on reducing oversteer, it was very fast off the line (important in rallycross) and becoming competitive when an arsonist burned our garage down, destroying the car, and that was the end of our team.

this is the finest drivers cars, it is not center seated because of codriver. Leyend says it hadn't hand brake. that you steer it lifting ya foot. wheel was just to compensate.

I'm with you, it is a fabulous car, but the first actual rally car, I'm not so sure, imhho that title should go to the humble MINI it was truly ahead of its time & as a Rally Sensation it could not be touched, this tiny little car, in every way, destroyed the opposition that laught at it when it was unveiled, when it kicked their arses they soon stopped laughing, so, I give you the MINI an actual "Giant Killer".

Yes the Mini was a giant killer, but it was a road car first and foremost that was modified to make a good competition car. The same could also be said of the BDA Escorts in Mk1 and Mk2 guise - they started out as a road car and were modified to become very successful rally cars. The Stratos, however, was the first car purpose-designed from the ground up to win rallies, with the road-going examples an afterthought simply to homologate the rally cars. There are even urban legends that Lancia didn't build the required number of road-going examples, but used various 'accounting tricks' so the homologators believed Lancia had met the required number.

Absolutely awesome looking cars! Supposedly a horrendous idea as a roadcar though, being far too hot inside (terrible ventilation and the engine being VERY close to the driver) and bad visibility with a crappy driving position. Shame as it looks and sounds EPIC!

Definitely NOT true. If the definition of true rally car, as given in the clip is to be Karen for granted, then the 1st true rally car is the Alpine A110. As a matter of fact, the Stratos was developed as a competitor to the A110, after the A110 had roundly defeated Lancia’s Fulvia first in the European Rally Championship, then in the 1st World Championship (1973). Lancia’s sole major victory in this period(1971-1973) being the 1972 Monte Carlo rally. Cesare Fiorio-Lancia’s team boss- was so upset about this that he changed his car’s concept from front engine/ front wheel drive to rear engine/ rear wheel drive.
