Once used in the medical industry, this Epson ActioNote had a very specific purpose, and it still comes tooled up with all its kit. But I guess importantly, as well as all of that, does it run Doom?

Since that has been ruled out it's probably a mismatch in the CHS geometry and/or a lack of cylinder alignment. You need an fdisk which sees the disk as the same virtual geometry the BIOS has and which starts partitions on the first sector of the CHS track. Modern systems don't use CHS and also tend to start partitions on megabyte alignment. You can use Linux fdisk. In the advanced menu you can enable DOS compatibility and change the geometry it uses.

Dear Mr. Nerd: It’s quite common for old drives that those USB IDE adaptors don’t work. I bought up a bunch of old 386/486/Pentium era drives and had to test them all. I had a Linux box with all the tools I needed, but the USB adaptor wasn’t having any of it. Had to get a PCI card with an IDE interface and add a hot-swap drive caddy instead. That did the trick. I still have it set up, with an added SATA bay just to cover all the bases. Highly recommended if you do this sort of thing - which, of course, you do.

The first time you sync/read the chest unit, it syncs with the base. It periodically takes readings wireless from across the room. The then sends that data via cell phone to the cardiologist. For next time you need to use a large (e.g.: 8GB) Harddisk drive on an ancient 386/486 machine (that only understand specific Cylinder/Heads/Sectors): there are drivers, that one can install on the boot sector: e.g.: EZ-Drive or OnTrack. Once booted, they replace the BIOS's disk routine (Int 13h) with ones that understand modern drives, and then continue the normal booting. That's how I used to do it with my actual old 386/486 PCs back when I was a kid. A slight upgrade would be to plug-in a parallel port sound card for FM music (e.g.: OPL2LPT or OPL3LPT if you don't want to solder it yourself) or a 16bit PCMCIA soundcard for full sound effects and FM and/or midi music (don't know about driver availability, but I would be surprise if they didn't attempt to support enough Soundblaster compatibility make sure Doom is supported)

Yeah, in Germany it sold under the brand name "Novell Dos 7" and I remember my teenage nerd self running into a computer store getting its shiny red package as soon as it was released. The second killer feature was the "stacker" disk compression tool that worked faster and more reliable than Microsoft's "Double Space" solution. My hard drive had only 52 MB and Novell DOS allowed me to squeeze about 70MB onto it.

Those were two different brand here in the US, but I wonder if the two were under the same development umbrella????

14:27 that moment when you try to set up an old system and Yugoslavia still appears in the MS-DOS installer language selection. *moment of Silence for Yugoslavia*

You can simply write disk images into SD card and use it in SD2IDE interface. PCem is better than VirtualBox because it supports most retro hardware, so you can make a virtual copy of your computer and install everything using convenient virtualization. Windows 95 drivers included. Then I use WinImage to write HDD image to SD card and it will just work.

I wonder what modern medical equipment programmers use to program them? Do they use off the shelf laptop PCs or do they use a more purpose built system? I presume these days they probably use purpose built computers.

Most (all?) modern USB->IDE devices can't recognize a CHS disk. I ran into that problem a while back.
