Direct heat is good for short drives. But in harsh winter weather, you do want the whole cabin to heat up so that door seals can thaw out properly, dampness can evaporate, the windshield wipers move freely etc. Tesla really has the best system so far in this area with the heat pump and the octovalve, but I'm sure there are other clever ways to heat up efficiently too.

So Toyota/Lexus comes along and shows how to do a yoke steering wheel correctly. I've been saying they seem to have done so based on earlier reviews by Australian journalists. Lexus may have changed steering to variable yokes with this type of steering. I think this car's interior looks modern, mostly the yoke version and how the dashboard kind of wraps around. The screen doesn't float or seem too big and makes sense in the overall shape. Are the door cards too plain or such? I'm not sure. If and when Toyota/Lexus puts more range in this car and puts it on a more efficient platform than the ETNGA, in fact not if, when they do, this may be a major attraction to many people--if Lexus/Toyota can make enough. Very interesting and as usual thorough review, Thomas.

@TambarkAllc
@TambarkAllc Год назад
And on a similar note, I wonder if the movement is exponential. In other words, the initial movements of the wheel may not steer the car very much (especially at freeway speeds for example) but as you dial in more steering, you would get more extreme turn-in/response.

@@jay-uo2bi i think this kind of steering works a bit different for us humans to comprehend. on a normal linear steering you have the muscle memory on how much you have to move the steering wheel at a given speed - with this non linear variable approach your other sensors will be needed. like: move wheel -> feel car change direction -> move wheel more -> feel direction change increase -> hold wheel at that angle when desired amount of direction change is reached. over time this should become second nature i guess.

Exactly! Tesla really took the CHEAP route with their yoke !! Why didn’t they spend the time and money and develop a PROPER variable ratio steering that a yoke demands… Just as Lexus(Toyota) did here ?? Pretty POOR FORM from Tesla, THE MOST VALUABLE car company in the world!! Just PATHETIC! And lately of course, Tesla have “chickened out” and made the round steering wheel the default standard on the model S/X, with their yoke now being a US$1,000 OPTION !!! Yikes !!😳😳😳

I'm expecting a new steering wheel design to come soon enough that will be a hybrid multi-functional wheel, in that it can lower its top ring sections to form the shape of a yoke, and then can revert back the top sections to complete a full wheel shape. I can see Mercedes doing that, but it would be a cool concept I think.

TBH it's range is perfectly fine, for me at least. I only do longer trips two to three times a year, so not important to carry around a huge battery for 98% of my journeys when I do not need it. The are very conservative to ensure that the battery last the lifetime of the car, unlike Tesla. It will cost $20,000 to $25,000 to replace a Tesla battery within 10 years.

Nobody really talks about yokes and airbags. A steering wheel actually supports the airbag as a round skeleton at the back side when it is deployed. This way the airbag can actually function as a smooth cushion and support the driver’s head. But if there is no round steering behind it then the driver’s head will just keep traveling towards with the airbag as there is nothing behind the airbag to stop the movement. Drivers don’t necessarily always hit their heads into the center of the steering.

Maybe Toyota / Lexus should go the route of making long-distance PHEVs like 150km per charge and find their niche in there. And come to BEVs when they have some knowledge at their disposal and a dedicated platform they just found out while studying a Model Y

Other people wrote here about the moose test behavior. Also, even though it has esp, but how would it behave in a power slide like on a very slippery surface, when you have to catch the car with a wheel, it would be interesting to know.

If you have input lag in any controller, it is impossible to catch a slide. ( Judging by sim racing )

I do a lot of detailing on my own car, and I'm surprised the paint of this demo car is already full of micro-scratches. Take a look at the rear part of the door at 2:20 and 2:29. Clear sign of not washing the car correctly, this will eventually dull the colour and shine of the paint.

This is normal for car event cars because they are often cleaned on location with microfibre towels while the paint is still dirty

I think an apt analogy to this debate about which type of steering is better, is casual people that use mouse acceleration (even unknowingly) with high pointer sensitivity on their computers. They like how they don't have to move their hand as much, even though the precision suffers. Try playing some FPS games with that, it'd be a mess. That's why pro players turn mouse acceleration off and use low sens. with big mousepads. Consistency in control is everything. Of course you can get used to anything. But variable ratio steering systems (no matter whether directly connected, or steer-by-wire) always introduce inconsistent steering angle across the range of the speed of the vehicle. That's something that will always deem these systems unpopular among car enthusiasts who value car control. That said, Lexus' implementation of this yoke is possibly the best I've seen. No doubt it will find its happy customers and perhaps eventually even displace classic steering system in this car segment.

I don't like the nose of this car (Beluga whale inspired?), but some other bits are really well done. Electrochromic roof glass, steering (not sure how it would do the moose test), crisp 360 camera view. Meanwhile Tesla lately underdeliver on these aspects...
@davidslachta
@davidslachta Год назад
Let's make it official. The round steering wheel is just ridiculous! 😆 I would love the yoke to be adopted by more companies. The Tesla is kinda half-way there it seems, but the way Lexus (Toyota) implemented it seems awesome! The only thing I wonder is if you're in a crisis situation and avoiding an animal for example, and you put a full lock on the steering wheel to avoid it, would the front wheels go full lock as well? I imagine that would result in a crash right away...

What's wrong with regular round steering wheels?
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl Год назад
See driving part of this video where we compare both concepts with pros and cons
@kaare1992
@kaare1992 Год назад
Nothing is wrong, but from what I can tell from watching the video, the yoke is a more "quality of life" enhancement. Not that the regular round steering wheel is bad, it's just something that is becoming more and more outdated, since a yoke not only helps you see the dash better, which has become more advanced over the last decade, but also reducing the amount of actual steering you have to do, in order to steer the car. Sure, I would miss the feel you get of the car through the steering wheel, and be anxious about the "by wire" part, in case something breaks, how would the car behave, potentially lock the wheels hard left? This is just the beginning, and we will see yokes more and more in the future, once things gets fixed, iteration by iteration (such as the turning indicators, which this is a great improvement over the Tesla). Regular round steering wheel isn't bad, but the yoke looks promising and adds some quality of life improvements, in my opinion :)

$60,000 or more in the USA with a stated range in the brochure of 196 mi. You would have to be an idiot to accept that as a decent buy no matter how much you enjoyed the drive-by-wire experience. A proper range is imperative! 250 mi per charge would be the lowest I would accept. I was actually impressed by the RZ until you stated the battery size. As always Thomas, very nice, complete review.

@@autogefuehl I tend to agree with you, the car is interesting. Actually writing 196mi in a brochure is kinda shocking. I'm thinking their battery tech is so far behind that a bigger battery would just make it too expensive. Surprised it came from Toyota Corp as I thought they were into hydrogen cell technology. Anyway, nice to see another EV available, the more the merrier. I'm eagerly awaiting the Chinese intro into the US market. They have many very interesting designs.

I think the car looks a lot better than the Toyota on the outside. The interior is best in class I think what I can see from the video. The electric part of the car is disappointing, in terms of charging speed and also consumption (if it's the same as the Toyota). Also related to longevity, I know there are Tesla taxi's with huge KM figures (like 600.000) with still good battery life, and Tesla really hammers their batteries when charging. I have the underbelly feeling that Toyota/Lexus battery technology simply can not handle the charging speeds so the marketing department spins it into "reliability" benefits haha

It wouldn't surprise me if in a year or so, when they have more battery usage and degradation data, a software update gets released that frees up more of the battery capacity. And boy do they really need to do that. I could accept a car with +/- 350km range, IF it would charge quickly enough. However, as it stands, short range + slow charging = few sales.
