I just bought this and man oh man this thing is bright in high and turbo. I went out back and it lit up the field behind my place. From my fence to the wide end of the field is a full city block and the length of the field is little longer. I prefer flood style lights and this fills the bill.

Man, that 9800 light made the 2000 lumen seem like a regular flashlight..! Not something i need though, and im sure the 1800 lumen MH12S (that i ordered yesteday) will be plenty for my needs. In fact, im so stoked about it that ive been watching flashlight videos almost all day now, LOL!

Realistically 500 lumens is more than enough for any situation, I’m 52 and have always had flashlights 🔦…So from a guy that thought Mag lights was the brightest lights made and loved them, I still remember getting my first 300 lumen 🔦 8 yrs ago I thought it was the best thing ever until I won a olight in a raffle about 6 yrs ago, was hooked every since then on high powered lights, I stay away from these type lights tho as you can only get that amount of light for a few seconds but with 500-1000lm lights you can run them longer
@kodaph

Adding to your comment, for first time buyers, go for MH12SE (released Aug 2022). Similar to MH12S, except it has longer beam throw at 405m, better tactical handling, plus few upgrades.

@@jackwilson2910 I like long battery life - and "battery efficiency" is great for longer trips where one would use battery banks and/or solar panels. Some months ago, i bought that the "MT1A" (single AA battery), which is both "power efficient", and has a pretty good battery life. Its selection of low lumen settings is perfect for night hikes and camping, and the size is very EDC friendly, so i always carry it in my pocket. Its even the official NATO "backup flashlight" 👍 The 5 lumen (low - 60 hours) setting is usually good enough for night hikes, if i want to enjoy the dark, and still see fairly good where im going. The 22 lumen (mid - 18 hours) setting may be nice to see a bit better and avoid puddles if its been raining. The 55 lumen (high - 5 hours 30 minutes) setting gives really good vision of where im walking Twisting the "head" of the flashlight gives 180 lumen (turbo mode - 1hour 30 minutes), and is very practical when i need a moment with extra bright light, without having to flip through all the modes. The strobe and SOS functions are kinda annoying IMO, as i have to flip through 2 extra modes to get to the setting i want, but i usually just set it to 5 or 22 lumen, and the "quick access" to "turbo mode" means i dont have to flip through modes very often. Would be great if they made a future version where you just twist the head, so it "clicks into place" at different settings. Nobody wants to cycle through ALL the brighter settings to get to a more dim one. Especially not NATO troops who want to avoid detection by the enemy... Like you say, it IS (usually) not necessary to have powerful flashlights, but i still occasionally like to bring the bigger MH12S, and i think having access to such a bright light is pretty satisfying. I like GOOD stuff, so to me the MH12S just feels "awesome" and "cool", lol 😅 I wish it had a few more low lumen setting. With 45 hours at 55 lumen, its not really necessary for battery life purposes, but it is good for battery efficiency - and i usually prefer to use more dim lighting when night hiking...
@EspenFrafalne
@EspenFrafalne Год назад
@@kodaph Both the MH12S and MH12SE have the same max lumen, but the spread (Lumen divided by Candela) is a lot better on the MH12S, while the "throw" (beam distance) is a lot better on the MH12SE (for some reason the ultralow 1 lumen setting on the MH12S is SLIGHTLY more focused than on the MH12SE, but supposedly both have 7 meter throw). ------------ MH12S ------------ * Ultralow 1 lumen / 12 candela = 0,0833 spread * Low 50 lumen / 600 candela = 0,0833 spread * Mid 300 lumen / 3700 candela = 0,0811 spread * High 1050 lumen / 12000 candela = 0,0875 spread * Turbo 1800 lumen / 21600 candela = 0,0833 spread -------------- MH12SE -------------- * Ultralow 1 lumen 11 candela = 0,0909 spread * Low 45 lumen - 1140 candela = 0,0394 spread * Mid 260 lumen - 6800 candela = 0,0382 spread * High 1050 lumen - 23500 candela = 0,0447 spread * Turbo 1800 lumen - 41000 candela = 0,439 spread For hiking purposes, even the low 50 lumen setting on MH12S is unnecessarily bright (high candela), and the 45 lumen setting on the MH12SE is almost twice as bright. So strictly speaking, both these flashlights are "overkill" for hiking, but the battery life is of course really good on both these flashlights, and enjoyment of lighting up an area may still make them good choices. For hikers who want a compact flashlight with good battery life and very reasonable brightness settings for hiking, the MT1A (single AA battery) is REALLY good. Especially the low settings produce a much more focused beam that the MH12SE, so even the low (5 lumen - 60 hours) setting is bright enough that i can find my way on familiar hiking trails without any problems. The mid (22lumen - 18 hours) setting is much better for wet conditions, as the 5 lumen can make it a bit difficult to see water puddles until you get really close. The high (55 lumen - 5hours 30 minutes) setting is not really necessary for hiking on good trails, but it is still good if you need to frequently look for trail markers. The "quick access" to turbo mode (180 lumens - 1hour 30 minutes) is very practical for checking for trail markers every now and then, without having to cycle through the different modes. Here is the spread on the MT1A: ---------- MT1A ---------- * Low 5 lumen / 280 candela = 0,0178 spread * Mid 22 lumen /755 candela = 0,0291 spread * High 55 lumen /1500 candela = 0,0367 spread * Turbo 180 lumen /3350 candela = 0,0537 spread

Don't like non-removable tactical ring. I just don't see the benefit of a tactical ring. It is only in the way. Don't like non-removable battery.
