In addition to the tie weight and drag pulling the weights together, there's also bounce. If the weights pull the string between them straight, they bounce back. So the optimal solution would be to first use heavier weights. This increases mortality a lot, but when has that ever stopped fashion. Second, they should start close together and be aimed so, that almost but not quite pull the string straight before they start moving closer together because of tie pull. That would maximize the usable distance range. Of course, because of the much higher mortality, you don't get to try so often, so that's a minus.

It takes me forever to dress up for interview and I'm a guy and I don't even wear make-up. Adjusting my suspenders, adjusting my tie, putting on my undershirt, slacks, shirt, waistcoat, and jacket. So many buttons. It's a stark difference to what I normally do which is just pull on joggy pants, and a T-shirt, which takes 20 seconds if that. No buttons, no clasps, no adjusting, no zips, so much simpler and quicker. I swear interviews are testing your commitment by seeing if you actually bother with going through all that time and effort to get into your interview clothes...
