Fat biking has allowed me to ride all year up here in new england..in the right conditions, fat biking is just as fun as any day in the summer. When the white carpet freezes, you can get going scarry fast too. Always use studs!

Man, I miss snow and low winter sunlight, for photographers it's amazing, even nicer further north in Canada, sun basically goes across the sky about 20 degrees above the horizon. Haven't had the pleasure of fat biking on snow yet, but man last time I was somewhere that had any, all I kept thinking is, "wish I had a fatbike". Good to acknowledge all the work that still needs to be done even during the winter time, a lot of people seem to think those trails just "appear".

Yeah it's a lot of work getting the trails ready to fatbike on, but man it's fun! I hope you get to try it someday. The light is definitely insane, only problem is it goes away so quick in the afternoon!

Nice! I ride just about everyday in the winter. I make my own trails around the neighborhood and we have many sanctioned, groomed winter trails here in MN. Nice to see you introducing people to the fat bikes and explaining the tire pressure and expectations. It is a different kind of riding. Cheers from one Eric to another. ;) Ride on 🤘

I started winter biking last winter and fell in love with it. We have some really great trails around my area and the sport is growing fast here in New Brunswick Canada so lots of new winter trails are popping up. I also groom my backyard trails for the fat bike but I use snowshoes and pull a tire behind me. As you can imagine, it is quite the workout. I have documented my backyard trails on my channel. You are right, don't expect to get on these trails and rip around like you would in the summer. I run my tire pressure around 3psi in the front and max 4psi in the back.

More fatbike tips: Consider a water bag in your pocket instead of a bottle. Even podium bottles will freeze quickly in anything less than 20. For longer rides, a camelback under your coat Digital pressure gauges or a low psi analog gauge. Always run studs. They're expensive, but a hip replacement is even more expensive. Hands and feet are #1 keep warm priority. Chemical foot warmers or battery powered heaters for any riding less than 10. Even nice high end boots will get you cold feet of you don't wear proper wool socks and have heating. Consider neoprene pogies on your handlebars. Proper insulated gloves are a must if you're not wearing pogies. Preheat your gloves in your window defroster on your way to the trail.
@PorterMTB
@PorterMTB 2 года назад
These are great tips!! It's usually pretty nice here during the day so I haven't had my waterbottle freeze, but I could definitely see that happening when it's colder.

Noice! FBiking is fun but more a scenic cruise rather than a shredfest. Good training for keeping in shape for real MTB fun but XC skiing is more a full body workout, unless you are grooming the trails as well as riding them. Kudos to groomers, especially ones who berm the turns!!

Don't run tire pressures that low if your trails are not that deep for snow. if sticks and rocks come through the snow you might want higher pressure to avoid pinch flats, tire tears and rims dings. great video though. groomed trails look so nice!

with such low pressure in the tires are you running tubes or tubeless? With tubeless it seems like the tire would unseat from the bead too easily, especially with the amount of tire roll you get with that size of tire. Or maybe people just don't shred corners hard on a fat bike and therefore never get tire roll?
@spicycoco1
@spicycoco1 2 года назад
I tried tubeless but it would only hold the bead above 3psi. I like to ride in "interesting" conditions, which often requires ~2psi so I gave up on tubeless. Too bad cause it would save like 10#. ;)
@PorterMTB
@PorterMTB 2 года назад
I'm running tubes because it's easy and low maintenance, but if you get the right wheel and tire setup tubeless can work great as well, I have done that before on the fat bike. It definitely saves some weight and has always stayed on for me. I could see you having trouble with it though if it wasn't set up just right.

I drive my MTB through snow trails with « normal » DH tires. So if you also need a trail to run your fatbike, I don’t get the point of the fatbike utility. Just a hipe for more heavy bike (like SUV) ?
@Zomby_Woof
@Zomby_Woof 2 года назад
It depends on how/where/when you ride. Use cases are any situation where spreading the weight load over a larger contact patch makes a difference. If you're talking 3 feet of powder, it's not happening on any bike. And if surface is glare ice that your tires will spin down to, you're going to need studs or spikes. If it's an ebike, that changes the physics entirely. Makes 2 wheeled drive possible, as well as making it possible to keep up a higher rate of speed, which leverages the float.
@Labonlabonne
@Labonlabonne 2 года назад
@@Zomby_Woof whell. As soon as you have a prepared trail as shown in the video, standard MTB will run perfectly. In that sens, on snow, fatbikes are just a hype. I even had run unprepared trails, but where people had walked. It also worked fine (there was 70cm of snow) But maybe on sand things are different.
