As an ex-pat American I subscribe to Tom, his message is provocative spot on, he doesn't swear, he's not about violence or pay back and he's intelligent enough to know it's better to embrace all cultures and races instead of attempting to divide them.

Tom is a wordsmith a genus with words. Words don't control him he controls words. Words are his sword, rap is his battle ground.

As a writer by trade and as a passion, I could give an hour lecture about this man's ability to use the spoken word as a Samurai uses his Katana or a conductor drives an entire orchestra of dozens of instruments in unison. Point is, it's really f'ing hard to do what he is doing on every song. His lyrics are almost flawless on multiple factors. Judging for poetry, creative writing and even when judging political/advocacy writing. He never loses the point, never gets lost. He doesn't ever sacrifice his vocabulary. That's like Beethoven level tough. It's so easy to resort to slang because you have to stay in the rhyme scheme and flow with the beats/hook. Not actually going to lecture, but he is a master and I am pissed I never have heard of him before now. Every. damn. track. is. fire.

In 1968 I was an 8th grader. I took an English elective called "Poetry in Folk Music" where we analysed the pop songs from the day for things like rhyme scheme, alliteration, consonance, imagery and it opened my young eyes and I appreciated music and reading poetry much more after that class. Now I'm an old white guy who has actively avoided Rap and Hip Hop because of the negativity of what the genre has promoted over the years and the lack of melody, which has always been essential for me to call something music, but your reaction to this song and the references to the components we studied in that 8th grade class may have opened my eyes once again. How prevalent it this "poetry" in rap? I find I really dig Tom's music and I think you just helped me understand why. Thanks. This is my favorite song of his. The fact he is not repeating anything and still has a 5+ minute song singing at that pace. The lyrics must be pages long and all good.
