Nobuhiro Watsuki the famous manga artist known for creating Rurouni Kenshin found himself at the heart of a disturbing controversy. In the following discussion, we will explore Watsuki's life, his contributions to the manga world, the nature of the crimes he committed, and the legal and public reactions. This exploration aims not only to inform but also to offer a platform for reflection on the broader implications of such incidents in the entertainment industry, especially in the context of differing cultural and legal landscapes.
*NOTE: due to the nature of this topic decided to refer to it as "cheetah print"

Do you really think it's ever possible to separate the artist and the art?
@Chaosic
@Chaosic 6 месяцев назад
Yes depends on how bad the crime and if the artist work reflects the crime. Like Chinatown reflected Polanski since he changed the original ending and made the villian got away with his crime.

It's extremely easy to seperate the art from the artist when you only watch or read everything online for free
@KingKasper
@KingKasper 7 месяцев назад
That sounds more like it's easy not to financially support an artist if you're consuming their content for free which I agree with. But lots of people "boycott" artists work for things they did in their private life and won't consume them period. It happens in music all the time

I can separate art from the artist just it feels uncomfortable at certain points of viewing their art almost like a stain on a clean painting in other words the art is separate but doesn’t mean it isn’t tainted

Great video! However, there is a lot of truth to the saying “ignorance is bliss.” Personally, I wish I never knew about this because it is hard to separate the art from the artist

Honestly it's messed but I'm able to separate artist and work. I think Tom cruise is bat shit mental with scientology but I love Top gun and MI
@KingKasper
@KingKasper 7 месяцев назад
I completely agree about the Tom Cruise separation but it's so much more difficult when it's a crime, especially one like this. I don't think anyone can be faulted though for being a fan of someone's art who turns out to be a terrible person, we've all probably loved someone's art who has later been accused of or convicted of something that shocked us later down the line. So in that regard I see your perspective 👍🏽

Kenshin is a hero who tried to atone for the sins of his past. The author on the other hand is a scumbag along with his government for not doing enough to punish him.

Rurouni Kenshin anime especially Kyoto arc is a masterpiece. I separate the art from the artist,I read the manga online years ago before his scandal. I saw the anime on toonami in the 2000s before the controversy.

I suspect this type of material can be still bought at Akihabara pretty openly. Went to the adult floors with my wife, for a few laughs, when we were there years ago. They had the gay floor, lesbian, hetero, and the hetero section had this type of stuff there. Don't think they are ever really going to clean up their act, bet it sells, and mangaka could fall for this or find it easily. The sentencing authorities would know all this, but aren't going to damage their careers by trying to tear this out of the culture.
@KingKasper
@KingKasper 7 месяцев назад
Unfortunately you're probably right, especially since it hasn't even been over a decade since this type of stuff became illegal over there. Also in watsuki's case it was real people not just lewd manga which is even more crazy

It's not always easy to separate the art from the artist, in this case I never got into the series before finding out about the cp so it's easy to just avoid it because I never had an emotional connection to begin with. There are plenty of people who just want to consume and don't care about what's happening behind the scenes. Animators rely on donations to pay rent but viewers will still steal whilest pretending to be superior to the people they're stealing from. Many even hate the people making stories because they feel entitled to luxury products even if that means slavery is used. Not surprised if people ignore problems with things they consume because even without emotional connections, they really just want to consume

It's a crazy dichotomy between artists and consumers. Such a complex topic you bring up a great perspective about the disconnect and even hate between the two tribes

I’m glad I found this video, because rurouni kenshin was something that I was actually thinking about reading/watching (I’m a newer manga/anime fan), and I’d heard about how its creator was in a crazy controversy but was never able to find out what had happened. I think that you can separate an artist from their work. I also think this video deserves wayyyyyy more views, the production quality is incredible, great job dude
@KingKasper
@KingKasper 7 месяцев назад
Thanks man really appreciate that 🙏🏽. Also definitely can't be mad at anyone who seperates art from artist. In music that happens all the time, think rappers who talking bout "the life" and people sing the songs but most would never actually approve of someone they know personally attempting those things in real life. However some people boycott artists for life cuz of things they did outside of their work cuz it can be triggering for some fans especially if they have personally been affected by similar crimes. Side note, congrats on starting your journey into manga/anime there's so many great stories out there to experience!

I honestly can’t separate artist from work. I can’t consciously consume something knowing I am financially supporting someone who will use that money to most likely continue their CP collection since Watsuki made it clear he was only sad he was caught and that he is openly attracted to underage girls. It’s so normalized in the anime community that many see nothing wrong with what he did. SA is rampant in Japan and is very under reported and like you stated they only just RECENTLY made CP a criminal offense but the punishment is hardly enough. It also doesn’t help that the media normalizes these things making it seem ok. Honestly examining anime explains a lot of the issues on why Japan is struggling with population and how they treat women.
@KingKasper

Yo! Honestly, you're spitting facts right now 💯. Multiple people in the comments are trying to say that everyone separates art from artist, but you are a prime example that not everybody feels that way and not everybody should feel that way. There are some people who will dig a little bit deeper into the situation and think what is supporting the art going to contribute to society through the artist. So I rate your opinion and trust it's like all the comedy sketches you see where it's like watching anime but then a friend walks in and it's playing some wack stuff on the TV for a split second because of fan service 💀 like that stuff all stems from somewhere deeper and it sucks that there's a lot of anime out there that doesn't necessarily focus on that and is genuinely good but sometimes it gets overshadowed by anime that goes OD with fan service and other lewd subject matter that sometimes gives all fans a bad rap in some people's eyes

Honestly, I think burning it is a little extreme. You paid money for it. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you got all that stuff before this case happened but hey more power to you if that's how you feel bro 🙏🏽

This isnt even a debate. Ofc you can separate the artist from the art. Im an asian who watched this back when I was in HS, now Im in my mid 30s and nothings changed about how I remember Samurai X growing up and if I watch the anime again, its gonna give me nostalgia. Not everyone who loves watching anime remembers the creator. All animes I watched I dont even know the creator. Only guys I can probably think off is Oda from OP and the guy from Naruto, thats pretty much it. Other awesome animes I watched, couldnt careless who their creators were.
@KingKasper

I get your opinion! However, to some people it is a different story. Take certain music artists for example. People will boycott their music due to things they did in their private life outside of their art

@@KingKasper Your favorite singer says something anti-semitic, will you stop listening to his songs? Your favorite sports player is cheating on his wife, will you no longer watch his games, and so on. This is a broad topic to discuss and one in which I probably wont go into. Since the video is about Samurai X and the creator, im assuming thats the art and artist you are referring to. Hence my answer to the question. Tbh, I dont think I know anyone in my circle that ever remembered the guy because we only remember the anime. That's why its always been separated.

@@jetlee6746 I see what you're saying, but again it's a little different. Both the examples you gave aren't crimes nor comparable to the topic at hand. For example, there are many people that don't listen to certain musical artists anymore that have committed actual crimes for example R Kelly or C Breezy. I'm not saying you have to do that, but that's just the reality that there are people out there who I've encountered that won't listen to their music anymore, just an example

I DON'T CARE IF A MANGAKA OR ARTIST IS A SERIAL KILLER OR WHATSOEVER AS I DON'T LIKE THE MANGA/ANIME OR SHOW EVEN SONGS BCOZ OF THE CREATORS BUT THEIR WORKS, JUST LIKE SAM SMITH I DON'T LIKE HIS LOOKS NOW BUT I LOVE SOME OF HIS SONGS.
