It makes me sad because the “ideal” version of ourselves is a structuring that is always in motion and always adjusting and adapting to current life circumstances and situations taking place in the moments of now. So long as we perceive the element of time the ideal is meant to fluctuate and if we go around living life idealizing the way things should be or could be we often tend to miss the beauty in whatever is happening right now and can take on this deep rooted belief that we will never be good enough as we are. Self improvement goals are fantastic but when they keep you from feeling like you can’t be someone’s ideal partner right now that particular person likely just isn’t your ideal partner because the ideal partner would meet you where you are so that growth can take place together as a team, it just takes profound trust and a willingness to be upfront with where you authentically are in any moment. Many times we can hide parts of ourselves out of fear of rejection or because perhaps our internal ideals do not match what greater society has determined the “ideal” and the longer the relationship it’s even more challenging because of how we can shift and change individually and as a unit and one or both may long for past versions of themselves or their relationship again to where we just struggle to be fully honest and present where we are now with ourselves and each other. Interestingly, I do see the traces of doubt and insecurity in him.
