Coupla comments from a fella that owns a few real vintage Tele: 1) From the factory, 50’s Telecaster bridges had a textured finish behind the pickup and a smooth finish in front of the pickup. Just as you see on this guitar. They were also chrome plated and as such, the shiny part holds up and most have remained shiny after decades of use. The textured part is more susceptible to wear. 2) Kudos to Fender for making what I consider the perfect ‘56 neck carve. 3) Kudos to Fender for getting the headstock shape super close to the more streamlined shape it was in the 50s. Very surprising on a Mexican guitar. Nice!

A copy of his old ‘58 top loader. Anyone that knows of him or the band.. this particular original telecaster is what he uses for “ start chopping” and “feel the pain”. It’s also his main go to for most of his studio solos. He used to bring his original on tour for gigs but stopped because it was worth too much to him to possibly have stolen. I’m a proud owner of it and love it. Simple rig.

My JM Jazzmaster was the worst Squier I've ever held in my hands before I repaired it (but still not as bad as many modern US Fenders). Really bad fret work, dirty electronic, extremely high nut, broken machine head, cracking tremolo etc. I could return it, but somehow I didn't want to and now, after hours of work, is this axe my favourite guitar.

If I'm not mistaken all vintage or vintage styled teles have the shiny and unfinished halves of the bridge. I recall watching a video saying the bridge was designed for the cover to be in place. Therefore the only visible part would be before the pickup. And Leo fender trying to reduce costs back in the day only made the visible part shiny.

Even though I’m a Gibson fanboy, fender just kicks ass with their tiers of guitars from the Mexican range to USA. All are amazing and worthy. Their non custom guitars play beautifully and don’t keep out so many features like Gibson does with their lock neck tenons and true ABR-1 bridges.
@Masterfighterx
@Masterfighterx 2 года назад
The bridge plate is finished like that (polished towards the neck and satin to the back) because back in the day when the bridge covers were common you'd only see the front part closest to the bridge, so it made sense to save some cost and only have that little bit polished.

For me, this is like a dream guitar. Ordered it in to my store as soon as I heard it was announced. Big J Mascis fan, love teles, love the OOP tone, love the top loading/clean back of the guitar, love the worn vintage hardware/neck, the flashy body+chrome pickguard. The biggest issues I have with it: The wear on my pickguard looks like it was brushed in circles gently with steel wool, so it looks artificial when you look closely (nobody scratches their pickguard like that naturally over time), and they should have added a non-OOP middle pickup position with a push pull pot or something. I prefer the OOP, but why not have the option for both out of the box.

The reason for the neck pickup being a higher DC resistance than the bridge pickup would be because of the different wire used for winding both pickups: 42-gauge for the bridge and the thinner 43-gauge for the neck. I recently just purchased a 5-way super switch that I can't wait to put in my 3rd Tele for that out-of-phase tone I'm waiting to rock.
@geralr
@geralr 2 года назад
Austin - the reason why the top of the bridge is shiny and the bottom is not is because of the way leo fender manufacture telecasters: telecaster shipped with the ashtray cover, and leo only polished the part of the bridge that was visible from the outside. He considered that whatever wasn’t visible didn’t need to be polished, saving time and money.

i picked this up when it first came out. I love everything about this guitar. The worn neck feels amazing and the pickups are fat and punchy. If there is one complaint it is that the out of phase middle position has a huge loss in volume, but once you dial in a bit of compression and overdrive it makes up for it.
@leamanc

My road worn flea bass legit feels really good. Not quite as good as the CS stuff, but incredibly close for 1/3 the price. I was initially worried about how the neck would feel as I've never owned a MIM but it's the best part of the instrument. An added bonus was a little bit of flame on the maple :)

I have this and I bought as an investment partly after seeing how the Jazzmaster doubled in value, had that too but sold it (damn). I have no idea why they made the neck “relic’d” Aged sure but not “relic’d”. Other than that it’s a great neck, and shaped by mascis to some degree. The out of phase in the mid position was a surprise but it’s become my main sound using it. Also gives me a bit of a boost when I switch to the bridge. His JM turned me on to jumbos as well so that was a plus. The neck is a bit smelly and the cancer warning due to the aging chem they used was a bit off putting but I can’t put it down. The only other relic’d neck I think is as good is the purple tele fender put out a few years ago. Top loaded bridge is fantastic. Strings got that Slinky, loose feel. Easy to bend but stays in tune perfectly. 69 duuuuude🤣🤣🤣🤣 Amazing gtr, could use a floating trem but it wouldn’t be period correct. An after market mod. Great review as always

I bought a neck for my Partscaster that's almost identical to that one. I believe they're off the Vintera line. Same thing with the bridge; half shiny, half matte.

Its modelled after his vintage tele, that has a refin body. Thats why the neck is nitro aged and the body is poly blue sparkle. I think thats cool and ordered one.

You can buy the roadworn necks separately for both Teles and Strats (and basses). They’re currently going for around $550.

I’m telling you right now, the craftsmanship that’s coming out of that Mexican factory is top notch. I’ve got an EVH Frankie replica with a neck on it that is better than anything I’ve ever played. I give them all the props in the world for the quality coming out of that factory. As for the serial number, I’m just not sure that low numbers coming out of Mexico really matter yet. Maybe in the future.

Was that bridge on crooked? The strings were going over the hight adjustment screws on the saddles. My Tele doesn’t do that.

I agree with you there. You can try one of the Vintera necks though which are worn a bit like the Road Worn series. It’s got the gloss worn off mostly and it has a rounder fretboard edges also.
@alwaysevolving281
@alwaysevolving281 2 года назад
@@stop736 I’ve tried one of those and enjoyed them. But I’m pulled in more by the jumbo frets and 9.5” radius with that deep c shape feel of the j Mascis necks. Those are some custom shop specs, in my opinion.

@@czechplastik with jumbo frets, 9.5” radius, and deep c shape profile? I know they sell 50’s fat profile, vintage tall frets, and 7.25” radius necks. I’m not into those ones.

Hey trogly, may I recommend you do the setups on fenders with an under string radius gauge. Not something you have to worry about with tune O matic, just the radius looked quite wonky on the set up ya did!
@musicauthority703
@musicauthority703 2 года назад
With that style bridge a person can't do much because it has only three saddles. a person will never get the radius to match perfectly with the neck. and they can't achieve 100% perfect intonation because they only have three saddles to work with. where as the modern Tele. bridge has six saddles which allows for a person to make these adjustments perfectly.
@joesharpe7685
@joesharpe7685 2 года назад
@@musicauthority703 unlike a 6 saddle bridge, 3 saddle bridges are designed to be uneven so that you can match the radius.

If you have a Telelcaster from any age you'll know that the bridge is always shiny on the leading edge and dull past the pickup. The same way that this guitar is. Also those are "Top Hat" switches or barrel shaped.

The aging job on that neck looks better, more realistic than anything I've seen come out of fender or gibson usa ! Paint job looks like a floosie's toenail though lol, but I kinda like it. Not sure what that says about me ;)

The pickups could be a custom mismatch, like the bridge is vintage specs, but the neck is more of a modern higher output spec.

I have a friend that won't play someone else's new guitar. In '90, I bought a Gibson BB King Custom that my friend refused to play. During a lively practice, I hit a cymbal stand. I heard the hit thru the pickups, but it took 5 minutes to find the ding. Next day, I handed BB to my friend and pointed out the ding. He played it for 2 hours.
