My only suggestion would be adding gutters, especially on the side that ends over the rest of the patio. Without one, you'll end up with a lot of splatter mess, but more importantly, the falling water will etch a line in your patio surprisingly quickly.

And a 10mm (1/2in) gap between the house siding and the first rafters. Will prevent water capillary action, allow any water through, breather air, and prevent rot of the siding and the rafter.

Dear Jason, I know you've said you dont know what you're doing, but I wish more guys were willing to build like you. As a builder for 30 years, I can honestly say that you are head and shoulders above 99% of DIY'ers because you're coming from a furniture carpentry mindset and background! You used excellent technique to design & build your Rafters and beams and your fastening methods were superb as well being plenty structural as well as not leaving any visible fasteners! My only gripe is that you didn't use this project as an excuse to "buy" a beam saw. Better luck next time. BTW, as an Oregon native, good choice to paint it.

In Australia we would have mounted a couple of fans on the ceiling to move the air on hot days and make it difficult for mosquitoes to land in the turbulence. Great finish.

We’re in Tennessee USA and when we build a porch onto our house, you bet I’ll have fans out here. The mosquitos are the only thing that really sends me inside. Heat, cold, rain, whatever. But the tiny vampires are just ridiculous.

The entire point of a ridge beam is that it holds up the rafters, the rafters do not hold it up. Now you essentially have trusses with no bottom chord. Depending on your snow loads, you may get some spreading especially near the house where the snow will pile up as it is blown against the wall

Yeah. Needs some collar ties to keep those from spreading. Might be okay thought since the beams are attached well to the house and the front beam isn’t going to grow much. It might be fine, it might not.

He’s in western Oregon. We basically don’t have any snow most years. A lot of snow for us is 6” that hangs around for a week, once every 5 years or so.

He would have been better to drop the ridge beam and sit the rafters on top, i wouldnt rely on 2 screws to support them. I think Oregon is in a high seismic zone too. He would have been better with a engineered rafter connection if he wanted them hidden.

As a tradesmen who did conventional and timber framing I agree that you did a very nice job. My one critique is I would have supported the ridge end tied into the hours with some studs carrying the load onto the plate on the 2nd floor deck. You always want to support the ridge so it doesn’t sag and spread.

Ok, I like the fact that you painted it cause it brightens up the space. Can I give you a little piece of advice though… the section between the rafters should be painted a light sky blue (super pale almost pastel). WHY ?!?! You ask…. I had an old painter tell me a long time ago that if you paint the underside sky blue wasps and hornets will not make a nest, they won’t even try to because they see the sky and nothing to attach to. Anyway beautiful work, always love watching your videos. And hopefully I can get a Bourbon Blade soon. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

I'm just here to boost engagement. Your speed square would have taken the math out of the equation when making the rafters. Even if you did the math to get the angle for the exact height you wanted the ridge beam to be at, you could have just used the speed square to get the angle on the actual beams... Speedily and squarely. The whole chalk line/angle measurement thing was probably unnecessary, but you got there either way... And you did it like the master woodworker you are. My mouth dropped when I saw the paint going on the wood, but it really wouldn't have matched your house any other way, and it will absolutely last longer in the PNW. I'm a little worried that the gap between the siding and flashing is going to build up moisture, especially with snowfall. I'm hoping you did something to adhere that siding and seal that gap. Great job. It looks great. Enjoy the engagement!

What excellent timing! I've been helping my dad and stepmom build a dome house in the woods; we recently finished framing the extension walls and need to frame the roof. I suggested we attach rafters with bird's mouth cuts; they were like, "how do we do that?" And lo and behold, we have this video!

Painting is the way to go. I live in Atlanta, another rain paradise. Pressure treated and painted will last a long time and looks great. That said, you did a lot of work to avoid metal brackets to then just paint 😂

Good Job! We build slightly different in the UK, my only concern with using the Multitool on the house siding is that you have probably cut into the membrane under the siding, so you may have compromised its integrity.. Just something to think about.. 👍🏼

In our latest build we erected a shed first, then dug a well and then added a portaloo - and then the building work proper can begin.

2:50 You may want to keep an eye on your house connection for the ridge beam during your first snowfall or windy storm. That connection is likely taking a quarter of the roof load. The other load path is outward bending of those two lower beams because you dont have a rafter tie at the bottom. They might be big enough to handle the loads because those are monster beams.

Snowfall in his area is rarely more than a couple inches, strong winds are also uncommon. Fortunately, any extreme weather is quite rare in the Willamette Valley.

Came out great! I think the white matches your house perfectly. Great job! The only quibble I have is that rain runoff from the roof will eventually eat away at the concrete patio. I don't think most people worry about it and it takes years, but you could run gutters one day to avoid that. (Or even just one on the concrete side since the other side is just gravel rocks).

This is one project where you need to get a structural engineer involved to make sure the build is sound. The house cantilevers over the patio and between the weight and roof + wind and snow load, well just thinking it is ok is sketchy. Build is great and it matches the house very well.

An idea for an addition to the patio to build - Wooden folding sun screens* to block off the sun when it is low on the horizon (So you don't get blinded in the evening if you're sat facing the sun, or a burnt neck if the sun is behind you). *I'm suggesting this because I hope to follow the ideas you do on that one for my own patio/pergola remake next year.

Also you could make a provision for hanging thick transparent film screen on the sides (it's usually called "liquid glass" where I live), it can be hung to keep the rain out in autumn and snow in winter

You could also add a rechargeable-battery driven motorized solar screen shade on the underside of the patio, and tame the flapping fabric with metal hem guides mounted on the beams that hold the structure up. They are made from combinations (depending on the fabric) of fiberglass, nylon, pvc, etc. and exterior grade. There are also timers, remote controls, sun sensors, etc.

As a dude who has worked in this field I would have cut the siding out UNDER the joist beam closest to the house and about 1 inch above. The siding you have looks like LP smart side so any of those cut surfaces need to be painted or your siding will swell from moisture. Otherwise if it is good enough for you it is good enough for us and looks really good.

It looks like you have LP Smartside siding on your house. (Or something very similar that is made out of OSB.) I would STRONGLY recommend that you tape it off and prime and paint the underside of the siding, where you cut it off with your oscillating tool. That stuff will wick up the moisture from the rain that is bouncing off the roof like a sponge and delaminate! Everything looks great!

I am happy to see that you bought a nibbler. I have recommended nibblers to many DIY roofers, and they all seem to ignore my suggestion. But the nibbler is so nice. It's like it is designed to use on metal (because it is). Much more accurate and much safer than any rotary tool. Tell your friends.

we did a covered porch a few years ago and had the natural wood on the ceiling and it looked beautiful. We then painted it white and absolutely love it. It makes the space so much brighter. 100 percent would do it again. Good choice!

I added J channel along the bottom edge of the metal roofing with a slight drop from the house to the yard. It acts as a gutter so there isn't a sheet of rain coming off both sides. Also covers the openings of the ridges of the roofing to inhibit bugs using those channels as a home.

The white paint is definitely the best finish for your patio. The entire house is painted, and with white trim on the house, it helps it look as through it was planned part of the house rather than something tacked on. One thing to at least think about would be to paint the siding inside the patio roof white as well. I think it would further tie the whole thing together. For someone who doesn’t know what he was doing, it came out great and probably a lot better than if you had spent more money to hire people who claimed that they knew what they were doing.

When you attached the hanger for the ridge beam to the house, I was a little worried because you had no idea what was behind that hanger. However, you said that’s ok because the rafters would actually be holding up the ridge beam. Unfortunately, without a collar tie on the rafters, the ridge beam is still holding up a lot of weight, which is transferring into the hanger that is being held with some 1/2” plywood. The collar tie creates a triangle, essentially making a truss. This keeps the rafters from trying to ‘spread out’ and reduces the horizontal load on the glulams and also the downward load on the ridge beam. Luckily you used some fairly massive beams, so you should be ok for a few years. However, without the collar ties, i believe you’ll start getting some deflection where that hanger is.

28:45 You installed the fasteners correctly. Fasteners belong in the valley of the panel, and preferably near the base of the rib. This creates a strong contact point for the panel with no air gap underneath. When installed in the rib, the metal will flex far more and over time will work screws loose, creating leaks. When properly tightened (not overtightened) the fastener in the valley will provide significantly improved security of the panel, reduce the effect of metal expansion & contraction that leads to screws working loose over time, and will seal perfectly well for decades because the rubber seal is not exposed to UV degradation. I know this seems counterintuitive at first, I thought the same before researching this and reading multiple manufacturer’s instructions, and explanations from metal roofing experts.

There is more than one type of metal roofing called corrugated. The manufacturers of the type you installed says to install in the valley. The type that looks like the inside wiggly (corrugated) part of a paper shipping box says their metal should have the screws on the top of the ridges. This is because on their metal, washers in the valleys create dams that trap water and practically force it to soak in and rot the wood. However, since your roof has plenty of space for water to flow around the washers, the stronger connection to the roof is the way to go. Btw with the other type use more screws, but don't crush the corrugations.

The painting came out great. The white paint on the ceiling will reflect the light better too. I enjoyed all the brainstorming at the end. You can also run electrical and add ceiling fans and more. I think staining it could have looked great too but not practical for your house/use. It was fun to see you go out of your comfort zone and try something new.

I am from Australia and it is interesting to see the differemt methods for roof we use here compared to what you are using. Here we would just use battens rather than the tongue and groove and screw the roof straight to them with maybe some sarking between the two to reflect the heat.

Personally I think it looks fantastic! In a veritable forest (pun intended) of natural wood in everyone's gardens, its nice to see a bit of individuality! You should have seen the crap I got from neighbours when I painted my wooden fences black! "Urgh it's so dark" "It's an eyesore" "It looks ugly" "It doesn't fit with the neighbourhood" etc etc. Some carefully selected shrubs, flowers and uplighting and it's amazing how that's all changed! "Ohhhhh, the black REALLY makes the colours pop!" Ya think that s**t just happened by accident??? 😂😂😂

Working on rafters requires only one tool and you didn't use it, even though it sat on each rafter as you worked on them. It's the speed square seen @ 6:30 right in front of you Jason!

Well.... ok. I can understand. I grew up on Long Island. While not a rain forest, we got a ton of rain every spring, and summer was also wet most years, not to mention snow in NY every winter. So painting the structure is something I probably would have done, after I got tired of refinishing the wood for the second or third time. Which you was smart enough to do the first time. Looks good in white :) God Bless

Paint is absolutely appropriate for outdoor Oregon patio builds. Would I have done some stuff differently and screwed up in some different way? Maybe. Great job on this. If you feel like building my wife a pergola in Germany, stop on by. The beer is good and whiskey is too.

I painted everything before putting on the roof. Stained the pine boards before putting them up, no issues in Beaverton, looks great.

I know jack and s**t about timber framing, roofing, etc., and don't care if you painted or not (though the sky blue suggestion below is true about preventing wasps, generally), but I have done big-ass projects like this and know that when you can make repeated components from one as a template, and they all fit just right, you're doing something correctly. Very satisfying.

I may be in the minority, BUT the white actually looks REALLY stunning! It helps tie the build to the house and makes an OCD person like me extremely happy because of it. If the house had natural wood showing on the outside, it would be one thing... but being an extension of the house, it looks very clean!
