Colonel Anthony Biddle was an eccentric millionaire and an amateur boxer, he was also a pioneer of bayonet and hand-to-hand combat training in the US Marine Corps based on his training in the sport of fencing. He began his career with the Marine Corps as a bayonet instructor in World War I. Interestingly, Biddle was also a promoter of W.E. Fairbairn's Defendu system after WWI. He went on to instruct US Marines and FBI agents in use of the bayonet, knife and hand-to-hand fighting through to the end of World War II.
Biddle was friends with Teddy Roosevelt, and led just as interesting a life. As an amateur boxer, the bald, mustachioed millionaire fought under the name of "Tim O'Biddle." The great Ruby Bob Fitzsimmons called him one of the best amateur fighters he ever saw.

Hi Josie - wow you picked up one of the best combatives books ever there then. I was so impressed with Biddle. His application of fencing 🤺 skills to dagger and bayonet-in-the-hand fighting was/is so innovative. especially in his instruction to 'take the hand'… I/we will look at your suggestion next - the great Pat O'Neill… 🙌🏻

My father taught me the bayonet use and rifle drills taught by this man. I can and have used this. Caught my Navy buddies how this works. Neat stuff. Oh yeah, Dad was Arny, Vietnam vet.

I found a manual that detailed Marine hand to hand fighting. They give details on Biddle's system, which included boxing, wrestling, jujitsu, Savate, knife fighting, sword, and stick fighting. In a sense they were developing mixed martial arts before it was even a thing.

Wasn't the WWII Combatives book: Cold Steel based upon Colonel Biddle's technical methodology as well!!!

1952, so just post Korea, but short answer, yes. John Styers wasn't a protoge of Biddle, but was a student and adapted Biddle's methods to his actual battle experience.

Biddle's knife technique HAS to be understood in context of using dismounted LONG knife bayonets, properly sharpened, as short swords. When using knives the size of a Randall or KABAR, the John Styers _Cold Steel_ method is far more suitable.

@@UlyssesFiles Definitely. He was bunkmates with Charles Nelson, another famous hand to hand instructor. Wounded at iwo Jima. Per the late Carl Cestari, Styers was a flag salesman after the war, which allowed to visit and teach his methods at US Military bases through the 1950s.. Died in Florida, circa 1981.
