While I agree that a growth mindset is important, I think it's important to see it in context. In Maslow's hierarchy of needs (there are better models but I'll use this for now), I feel like a growth mindset is up in the self-actualization part. In other words, there are things that people need to take care of before they can even begin to think about growth. Focusing too much on "growth" can make it feel like the real struggles people are facing to just survive are diminished or not important. The ability to have a growth mindset is a privilege afforded by being able to satisfy the other needs in our lives, and some people don't have that privilege. Growth involves risks, and some people can't take those risks. That said, it's still an incredibly powerful tool and many of us spend way too much time in a static mindset because we haven't recognized that we've moved beyond mere survival and can start taking those risks that are needed for growth. That's where past trauma can really hurt our ability to grow, as we have trouble moving out of that survival mindset.

Very important comment, thank you for that. A growth mindset can be healthy in the right situation, when someone is overly fixed on the idea on born talents and learned helplessness. However, it can also get in the way, for example in discussions about poverty, inequality, childhood abuse, and other situations where people are or have been out of control over certain parts of their lives. Finding the right balance is very tricky, which is probably why it causes so many controversial discussions and people just don't understand the other side. Often they project their own situation or abilities at other people, so they might for example believe poverty is a choice, or that art is impossible to learn without the right talent. Scientific research can help us a lot with distinguishing between what we have control over, and fortunately in the long term we seem to learn more and more about it. The hard part is hat personal bias will always exist, and with the near-infinite amount of information that exists, it's impossible to account for all of it equally. I think the best we can do is try to keep ourselves educated from reliable sources as much as possible, believing in (being able to) change, and showing empathy for people who have grown up or live in demoralizing circumstances. Much easier said than done, but it's something to strive for.
@joshposey116
@joshposey116 3 года назад
Not taking a risk is still a risk. Deciding to take care of the basic needs could be considered a growth mindset. If you had a static mindset, then you might not bother taking care of those needs in the first place. While a growth mindset if useful for people at the top of that hierarchy, it can also be used by people towards the bottom to climb up that hierarchy, as climbing the hierarchy is still growth.

Stress is a spectrum with damaging extremes: A state of no stress is actively harmful, just as is over-stress. Finding the right middle ground is hard, as it is constantly shifting, so it's more of a balancing act than a destination. The state of "just the right amount of stress" is called "eustress", and it applies to all types of stress, including psychological and physical stress. Early in the pandemic I learned that working from home was way too stressful for me, as emotionally it felt as though work had invaded my home (my Fortress of Solitude), meaning I was totally unable to find separation from work. The direct result was a massive drop in my productivity, which I tried to make up for by working more hours. After two months I was fearing for my equilibrium and sanity, and was experiencing wide mood swings. Just before rage-quitting my job, I realized I could go back to my office in the now-empty building. A much better solution! I've done lots of volunteer tutoring and mentoring with high school students, and found Carol Dweck's observations to be extremely useful. I have seen students rage-quit a math problem and either storm out of the classroom or burst into tears. Getting them refocused on "success through failure", and sharing some of my own major failures (one of which literally was a million dollar failure), let them focus on the process of learning as a whole, rather than it's fits and starts. To me, being an Engineer, and being good at it, inherently requires a "Growth Mindset", as technology is steadily improving, our tools are continuously evolving, and industry itself is changing daily. When working with students and things start going off the rails, I encourage them to have an "Engineering Mindset", take a step back, and look at what just happened (or didn't happen). Then to find a different way, a better way to try again. Never stop learning. Never stop trying new things, or doing old things in new ways (such as taking a different road to a familiar place). Make it part of who you are, how you live and breathe. It is one of the best possible ways to add "good" stress to your life! That's right: I believe a Growth Mindset is eustress.

At the end of season 1 of Star Trek: TNG, there's an episode in which a capitalist from the 20th century is thawed from cryosleep aboard the Enterprise. To his surprise, all of his investments are no longer worth anything because money no longer exists, contrary to what he believed when he froze. Faced with the realization that the accumulation of wealth is no longer the driving factor of most people's lives, the man asks captain Picard what the challenge is. Picard responds by saying: "The challenge, Mr. Offenhouse, is to improve yourself. To enrich yourself. Enjoy it."

Doin ANY kind of sport fosters the growth mindset. Start basic calisthenics or even simple bicep curls - you do them for some time and gradually you notice you're becoming stronger, your muscles are growing, you look better etc. It's easy to then make this assumption: if exercising your body makes it stronger then exercising your brain does the same thing. That's why I recommend physical activity as the natural pre-cursor to a proper growth mindset.

It was like she wanted to establish a meritocracy hierarchy of achiever vs non achievers. Hi, you don't know me but if you're reading this and have some time to spare, it would be a great help to an existential question that I've been facing for a long time. I think I see a "Great Filter" in front of us in the form of "Reward Death". To understand what I mean by 'Reward Death', we will have to understand the relation between consciousness and reward. Now, for the sake of simplicity, we will divide the human experience into two parts.One deals with the mental capacity of performing actions and the other deals with reward( say reptilian brain. ) One can easily self reflect to realise that all his actions and thoughts are either to propel himself towards more reward positive future or away from some reward negative experience or possibility. This method of reward worked pretty good for all conscious beings that evolution has produced so far. Now, by observing the exponential nature of the increment of adaptability ( or problem solving capacity ) of the living system, that we are a part of. One can easily entertain the possibility of so called “Singularity by ASI”. Assuming you have solved the ‘Alignment Problem’, i.e. you can command it as per you desire. As soon as you get your hands on the device, a very interesting thing will happen and the device will act as a ‘reward hack’. As the basic nature of brain is to shoot for the most reward positive future and avoid any reward negative. Your conscious feeling will have a very little disturbed trajectory towards more and more reward positive state. The more reward positive you feel the more reward positive you want to feel. Eventually leading to reward induced coma like state that is ‘reward death’. This reward death will not be much different than overdosing of opium, cocaine, or any other reward hacking drug. One might think now that he is aware of the fact. He will choose not to go in that direction just like one knows the happiness associated with drugs and yet choose not to take them. But your body don’t feel a natural desire to consume drug thus providing you with a choice. This is not the same case with your natural desires for example SEX. The more sexually aroused you are the more sexually aroused you want to feel and when you hit orgasm your brain breaks the cycle and you return to normal again At the point of organism if you are provided with a choice not to break the cycle.. You will choose to prolong it a little more and then a little more and then a little more... In the condition 'Reward death' your brain will stop the process of thinking and if somebody successfully force out of it you will I want to fall back in it with a urge worst then any addiction case we have faced so far.

What about that funny line from "Fight Club"? "Self improvement is masturbation" also resonates with me and part of the repulsion from people are using that kind of "up-speak"-styled lectures about growth and happiness. Happiness is not a goal, it's a side-effect that happens about half the time to me. Your video was good because it's more matter of fact in it's approach to mind over matter. thanks

Hey, I'm new, I'm liking this channel. But I figure just because you have a growth mindset, does not mean that you will be happy.

Less than 10% of the people outside your "Bubble" Have ever read or choose to understand an old crusty book written in the early times of Henry Ford. I that book it is said, "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and or believe he can achieve". I know it is written at a different time, yet if you take the time to translate it you just may learn something. Your "Box" is only as small as you choose to make it.

And then university comes along and says "you'll grow regardless of your current situation, and whether you like it or not here's 8 assignments due next week" and the whole thing kind of crumbles :(
