The only reason that people might not compete for loudness with ATMOS is because ATMOS WONT LET YOU. It won’t be accepted for Atmos. And that’s wonderful.

You can't compare the jump from mono to stereo with the promo for Atmos. We have two ears, we need two speakers. Simple logic. Anything else is a fancy cash grab.

Mike Cole, I don't know how I found your videos but I love that I did, watching more and more of them all the time. Colt, thank you for what you do and for making my music sound so much better than it would have if I hadn't found your videos. RU-vid needs to pay way more than they do to the creators on here who are also normally the producers of all their work. Will be checking out the other guys too now.

I've heard atmos music once, in a cinema watching the movie Moonage Daydream about David Bowie and it was a great experience. But the most amazing experience with spatial audio I had was pre atmos, at the Music Technology and Acoustics university I studied in Greece at Rethymno city, we had a festival with electroacoustic music (soundscapes, musique concrete, programmed music etc). There we had 32 genelecs and 4 subs if I remember correctly all around the amphitheater , compositions where from stereo to 8tracks and the analogue mixing desk was routed in reverse, two signals came as inpu for example and each fader was the volume for each speaker, so you were mixing live where the sound would go. One friend had a composition played from his Mac with some live filtering etc with max msp, and I and an other friend where sending the sound to the speakers. Amazing experience to push a fader and hear the sound moving all around you

Colt, thanks so much for uploading this. I watched Andrew's video yesterday and was SOOOO Happy to see Jonathan's room isn't perfectly symmetrical as my studio isn't either (And mine is REMARKABLY similar in dimensions too). Getting worried my mixes might not translate because of it, it's WONDERFUL to see that really does'nt matter as long as the listening position and speakers are balanced around the listening positioning correctly. Assuming you didn't notice any issues when listening back because of the symmetry issue? Beautiful room.

I prefer louder mixes and with my hifi headphone setups, even the Atmos mixes I get recommended that are supposed to be great don’t come close to beating the stereo mixes. I’m sure when you’re sitting in the room with that many speakers it sounds impressive…but asking each driver in a pair of $200 airpods to do the work of a bunch of speakers, all who have crossovers to deal with that crazy frequency load….there are physical limitations to translating…I get the effect for gaming and movies, but I prefer the pinpoint accuracy of stereo when I’m throwing on a pair of Audezes.

These speakers do not have any crossovers. If you think they do then you're probably missing something. Also binaural downmixes sound way way better than original stereo mixes. Atmos is just insane. You gotta listen to it for yourself, and then you'll just agree with us all.

Tweeters and woofers are crossovers, one handles highs, one handles lows…..as far as agreeing with you, I have my own ears, and I can A/B the mixes for myself. I have my own subjective opinion and you have yours.

Definitely get started in AirPod max. Get your feet wet, wrap your head around the workflow, and then move on if you are interested.

@@ColtCapperrune I just messed around with it using my Beyer DT1990 Pro’s. Pretty interesting once I got the hang of the workflow. Not being able to use my normal analog mix bus is going to be a real challenge as that makes a pretty significant difference to my mixes. Honestly, I just need to do more studying and perhaps I can figure out a workaround.

Check out the HorNET Samp plugin. You can put an instance of it on every track, and they all work together to be more or less an Atmos Mix bus. It has a compressor, limiter, and clipper in it.

@TLD...So what I'm really worried about with Atmos, is this...I LOVE tech. But I don't have the funds to put in an Atmos studio. I'm also more of a songwriter and producer vs. a mix engineer. And what I'm really curious about is, even if I could afford it. What is the learning curve going to be?

In my opinion, the move is to get into the Apple ecosystem if you are not already. Get logic and a pair of Apple AirPod max and start playing around with it. The Polyphia mix Jonathan did, in this video he said he did 80% of it in headphones. I think it’s worth getting the learning curve out-of-the-way before you invest.

@Zack Darce it does! It has the Dolby renderer built in so you can switch between all kinds of profiles - apple AirPods with and without head tracking, Dolby headphones, 2.0, 5.1, etc. it’s awesome 👏🏼

I commented on your other Atmos video being very skeptical, but I have to now admit as a consumer I am on board 100%. With artists already writing with Atmos in mind for productions (Emma Lov putting the choir behind you was my selling point) the quality of music is about to take a huge step forward. Only a matter of time where big production live music adapts to the experience as well. Air pods still leave a lot to be desired in my opinion in terms of the sound, but it's only a matter of time before Apple figure it out. As a headphones guy myself I'm looking forward to other companies nailing the atmos effect as well. Another fun video Colt!

I'm still new to the concept of Atmos, but I'm curious if because of the all the processing being done, is it something that can ONLY be done in the mixing stage? Or is there currently a way to implement Atmos in the recording / creation stage?

I would venture a guess that mixing is where it is going to most happen. I guess you could in theory have it setup and try and play with panning while in an atmos mixing studio. I think you probably could plan for things to be panned in spots.

In Warren Huart's Sweetwater studio tour Sean mentions they'll position upwards of six mics in a recording session specifically for Atmos knowing it will benefit the Atmos mix. Not a whole lot of explanation but this is likely the direction studios are going to go. We're in the infancy stages now and in a few years looks back and realize how fast things changed.
