Hey :) I really love your videos! They are calming me down after a long stressful day and I´m trying to repaire some watches I have laying around here lately. I´m sure this question gets asked a lot but I haven´t found a good answer so far so here we go. I need a basic set of tools for my own watch repairing. I have some older standing watches but the wrist and Pocket watches are what I´m looking forward to. So can someone recommend me a pack of tool I definitly need ? Thanks in advance
Could you please tell us, how is the safe way to remove cannon pinion without cannon pinion remover tool. Because, it is hard to find that tool in my country. And I couldn't buy it online from ebay, amazon, or from other country because I don't have credit card.
Hola. Muchas gracias, saludos
Hi Mark, excellent and informative video as always. Thank you and please do not hesitate to do more... With regards to the working under a microscope, not sure if you tried a stereo microscope. While other types of microscopes (with single eye piece or digital camera) do not give you the feel of depth (you have only a representation of the image on a a xy plane) the stereo microscope is different in the sense that it will give you the z axis-depth. My work on watches improved greatly since I have purchased my stereo microscope. And makes it so much easier than working under a strong magnification eyeglass. All the best, take care,
Your manual dexterity and meticulous workmanship is fascinating to watch, your commentary and the minimal intrusion of music makes your videos a favourite way to relax for an hour or two. Thank you so much for making these delightful lessons.
Just a big thank you Mark for your communication skills in explaining Watch repairs. Very interesting and your professional knowledge and demonstrative videos are truly enlightening. Thank you once again.
If there's NO quickset date, can the "quickset hack" (turning the time back and forth during the hours the date is changing) damage the movement? One channel I watched claimed that it does.
Turning the hands back and forth doesnt change the date usually (because the date will flick back with the hands) so if you are able flick it forward like that it is probably meant for it!
In my experience only in particular movements. Usually Vostok and Poljot, just go back to 10 pm and forward to 12. In other movements i saw the date get stuck in the middle, fortunately going forward correct the issue with no damage
Thanks so much. I learn so much from your videos...I have a dumb question regarding 60, 90 and 120 click bezels....everyone seems to measure the quality of the watch by the bezel function. Can you--briefly--because you are a busy guy--describe the different mechanisms and why, these different mechanisms exist for watch bezels?
Your videos are great your channel actually got me into watches I still remember the day almost a year ago when RU-vid recommended me one of your videos which happened to be the repair of the rusty Breitling chronograph and I was instantly absorbed. Stay safe Mark!
Could I get some advice on how to keep a steady hand when working on a clock? I started becoming interested in watches and started to work on small alarm clocks, but is hard to work with my unsteady hands. Thanks for the gifted videos Mark!
Great video ! A question you've probably been asked a million times - watch winders, yes or no ? Do they cause more damage and wear to the watch in the long run?
Great video sir! I like to know your opinion of the Orient Kamasu, Model: RA-AA0001B19B Calibre F6922 22 jewel 40hr power reserve Sapphire crystal 42mm Hacking hand winding 20 bars 200meters
PLEASE HELP ME SIR, MY WATCH TIME KEEP BECOMING SLOW LIKE 5 MINUTES SLOW, LATER 10 MINUTES SLOW AND IT GETS WORSE OVER TIME. PLEASE WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH IT. I also realized sometimes the second hand moves back a bit and moves forward again. Please WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THE WATCH. It's quartz ICW watch. It happens even if I change it's battery
I have a question. In some seikos without hacking, when one sets the time and holds on to the crown while turning it ever so lightly counter clockwise, it will stop the second hand or even make it move backwards...2, 3 secs. The question is: Is this bad for the movement?
Hi Mark, thank you so much for new videos! I think you have the best job for a lockdown ! I am so grateful for your generosity in making these videos - I have forwarded them to all my mates and encourage all Mark fans to do the same: let’s get mark to half a million subs! Thanks again,
Hi and thanks for all your good advice. (especially the "how to realign the keyless works on an ETA2824 when you can't insert the stem fully, without removing the handstand dial." Very handy tip, that. Re. your items returned by Royal Mail purchases from abroad. Make sure they use courier-type services. RM and Parcelforce are incompetent. My wife had over £300 incorrectly charged by them for import duty, when HM TAX AND Revenue confirmed that nothing was chargeable. You cannot argue the point with the Mail, you have to pay and reclaim off HMRC! It's then a separate claim with Parcelforce to get their incorrectly charged handling fee refunded. Which I suspect is all RM/Parcelforce were interested in charging for in the first place. Took a year in all. DO NOT USE PARCELFORCE, EVER.
Glad to see your sense of humour is still intact :-) Thought you'd like to know that your watch making videos have enabled me to build a field watch and an aviators watch from parts sourced from the internet and modify a Skx007! so my lockdown has been rather productive Cheers!
Hi there, hope your well. Can you help me. I've got a Hamilton Air Race with a 2824-2 movement. I stupidly started to change date unknowingly at midnight at position 1, quickset. I realised just in time I hope, as the date 'started ' to move with date number half across window, to pull to position two. I then wound hands via its cycle to click over date naturally. Have I prevented any damage? Many thanks.
Could I ask for some advice? I have a Seiko SNE with a solar v157 movement and it was my everyday watch for a couple of years until it stopped. It restarted just fine but then lost time. I made sure it was fully charged but it continued to misbehave. I changed the capacitor for a new one from Cousins UK and it will run sitting on the window sill for days without losing a second but if I wear it or move it loses time or stops altogether. It's driving me nuts! Cycling through 24 hrs I feel nothing unusual. Any ideas? Love the channel and would appreciate any suggestions for investigation. Thank you.
I had a Tissot 14k monocoque watch to replace battery and the crystal was pumped out. Better replaced but I have difficulty to put it back.. There are 5 components basically, the case, movement, inner ring, O-ring and the crystal. If you put the O-ring in place before the inner ring, the inner ring sets on top of the O-ring and it is mispositioned. If you put the inner ring first, there will be no way the set the O-ring in place. The crystal is 1mm smaller than the case. I got totally lost. Your help is highly appreciated!
*_Lockdown??_* *The prison warden confined all you inmates to locked cells?* *_Oh right, that's quarantine!_* *Where is the laboratory and to which part are you isolated?* 🙄
I just purchased a Longine Conquest Moonphase for my wife. But when it arrived, the crown appeared to be locked. No amount of finger force would cause it to move. I applied a small amount of force with a tool and the top of the crown popped off. Fortunately, I was able to recover the spring within and put it back on, but it still doesn't wind the watch. Any idea of what is going on?
Newbie here... Haven't had the chance to watch all you videos yet, but will subscribe right now. QUESTION; When talking about the main hands of a timepiece, does one, for instance, call the second hand the "Seconds" hand, the Minute hand the "Minutes" hand, etc. making each hand plural, or does it not matter? I've heard it said both ways, but since these hands count all hours, minutes and seconds on the dial, it would seem appropriate to call them in the plural form. I have many more questions that beg for clarification.
I'm working on a Cyma .234 at the moment and I'm not sure if I'm missing a part or the screw is broken. Next to the setting lever screw is a second screw which looks like it should long enough to go through a hole on the yoke spring end of the setting lever or the screw pushes something up to engage the hole , I'm thinking the second option as there is a recess on the under side around the whole. does this sound right ?
Hi Mark - do you do seconds hand alignments on quartz watches? I have a Citizen that needs a slight realignment on the seconds hand. Wondering if it's something you can do? Thanks
Great info. I have a question I never heard anyone else bring up. On an automatic, is it possible the safety mechanism can in-gauge before the mainspring is fully wound? This would prevent full power reserve.
surfitli Not sure what the in-gauge safety mechanism is. I would guess that the most commin solution is to have the main spring slip in the barrel when fully wound on an automatic movement. So it is the friction between the spring and the barrel wall that decides if the spring may get fully wound and and you use a special kind of grease on the barrel wall to make it slip properly.
If you're tools are not in order you increase the risk of damaging the watch. A screwdriver blade that isn't sharp increases the chance of slipping and thus scratching the movement. It is also important to choose an appropriate size of blade to match the size of the screw. You should also sharpen your tweezers or the risk of "pinging" small parts across the room increases.
Can we adjust time counterclockwise like 1-5 minutes on Unitas movement? Because these movement doesn’t have hacking function. Not sure by doing this will damage the movement.
With one of my watches ETA2824 the milliseconds remain between 0,4-0,9ms on the Weishi. No matter, how carefull I move the pin both ways. The daily accuracy is fine at 3-4s/d, steady.
Your video tutorials help me a lot. Could post a tutorial, how to completly tune the etachron regulator? For eg. after changing the compete balace (with hairspring) on 7s26B and C, etc. Thanks
Hello sir, thank you for the watch repair videos you make. I have a question about leather bands. I have a seiko premier Ssa027, the strap for this watch has been discontinued. What other seiko 20mm deployment clasp leather strap would you recommend? The strap code for this watch is 4r39-00a0.
Hello Watch repair Channel? What you do is so relaxing to watch and thank you for your videos Could you please help me to answer whether Hamilton Khaki field H50 movement is repairable or not? I am about to buy my first Swiss made watch either Tissot Visodate or Hamilton Khaki field. Which one would you prefer?
Thank you for all your videos. Because of you I made my own custom SKX007 (regulated NH35) and am now the proud owner of five vintage Seikos including a Kinetic with six jewels! It needed a new capacitor so I got it on eBay for a steal and replaced the capacitor with your video.
Thank you. I enjoy your videos and they are also relaxing. Is that a CNC mini milling machine behind you? Maybe you could talk about how that is used in watchmaking sometime. Also how you have to modify and create parts when things go south. Forgive me if you have already done so.
You're of course absolutely right, especially in the case of the Vostok movements where there is no other way of adjusting the date other than laboriously winding on 24 hours to move the date forward just one more day in the date window... Or cranking the hands back and forth between 9.00pm and 12.05am. If you use the method you described here, then you really do run the risk of snapping the date cam spring, I've seen so many of these snapped springs that I now need to find a reliable source of new replacements. So, if your Vostok takes about 3 hours to change the displayed date, then it is probably too late, your date cam spring has already broken. Thanks for a really great video.. STAY SAFE 🧐👍
Nice Q&A video! Really looking forward for the follow up video of the Seiko repair but the chinese chronograph and the Rolex are also looking exciting. Big thanks and keep it up!
I have always loved watches, but really never knew what made them "tick", but always wanted to...ran across your channel the other day and loving it. You have a great way of explaining what you are doing. Many thanks from New York, USA
Hi Mark ! I've always loved your videos and I'm crazy about watches so there you go. Seeing you wearing a Guinness shirt only increases my level of respect. Cheers !
Try an adjustable zoom stereoscopic microscope. My loupe's been untouched since I got mine about half a year ago. I cannot overstate the advantages of depth perception this gives you. I'd imagine it being healthier for your neck and back as well. If filming your work is important then they do make ones with a separate receptacle for a camera so you can film and access both eyepieces whilst you're working.
It is a pleasure watching you work. I was wondering, perhaps this has been asked before. Have you, or would you give a sort of tutorial on different types of movements. To the uninitiated like me it is about aesthetics and to a lesser extent brand name . Without a more than layman's understanding of the mystery of what makes a good movement I don't think you can ever truly enjoy a watch.
is there a concern with chronograph/moonphase watches on winder with chronograph activated during the storage on winder i.e. all systems running/working..result in damage?
talking about non flyback automatic chronographs. is it true that if you activate the reset pusher while the chronograph function is running you can damage the movement?
First, I would like to thank you for every information I learned from you. I am a watchmaker twenty-five years ago, and in every video I find myself learned a lot from you. I hope that it will be translated into my language and I am now trying to learn English in order to understand all the details. Sorry for prolonging it.
