If your baby is waking up frequently throughout the night and taking short naps, this could be the cause. In this video you'll learn more about this common mistake and how to avoid it to improve your baby's sleep.
If your baby is under 8 months of age, this is particularly common but can be solved fairly easily.
I hope you find this helpful and would love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments :).

Emma, is there really any science behind certain colored toys being "better" for babies? I want pastel colored stacking cups, but someone advised me against it because the basic color was better engagement for babies.

My baby is only 3 months and never used a pacifier, she is breastfeeding and can fall asleep by herself... I created a routine that helps a lot, at 6 pm every day I prepare a nice warm bath, then massage her with almond oil and a bit of lavender, and breastfeed until almost falls asleep. Then I put her in her bed and stay by her side. Sometimes I sing or I just rub her belly and tell her to sleep, and slowly she falls asleep... then she wakes up 1 or 2 times during the night to eat, I check the diaper, and if needed I change it in the dark 🤣😂 never with the lights on... she falls asleep right away. I have kept my 8-hour sleep night thanks to this routine 😴

That is exactly what I did 34 years ago with my children. But now I have a grandchild who was born at 29 weeks and it has been five months. I purchased this little penguin that covers his hand and he can hold it inside, it has Nobbies that stick out on each side for him to chew on. He does pretty good with it. It seems like all he wants to do is eat and he is over 17lb/ 24" long. 😂

Omg I will have to try this. I'm still breastfeeding my 10 month old son, and currently going to bed can be a nightmare! We have a routine, but when it comes to laying him down, he will wake up. Currently, he sleeps in my bed (live in a small one bedroom awaiting our house to be built) and used to do great up until 6 months. I will try the breastfeed until sleepy and then lay him down like you do and see if it helps. Thank you for sharing!

My 6 month old mostly released the pacifier after a while sleeping. He never used it at waketimes. Now he doesnt want it mostly, just sometimes I give it to him at bedtime when still in my arms. After a few minutes, I remove the pacifier and put him down. I think I can get rid of the pacifier all together soon. Sleep is driven by sleep pressure for sure. Timing is key and interpretation of cues.

My baby is 7 months old and only uses the pacifier when he wakes up at 5 or 6am BUT now that he is going to kindergarden and getting sick, the only way to get him back to sleep when he wakes up (at 2, 3, 4am...) is with the pacifier. The big problem is as soon it falls from his mouth he wakes up and also becomes a habit... WHAT CAN WE DO IN THESE CASES? Thank youuu

We never gave our kids a pacifier. I nursed the eldest for about two years. (She ate like any normal kid but still wanted her milk at night). She woke up maybe two or three times a night. It wasn't a hardship. The youngest is nearly a year old and still nursing fully. She rarely wakes at night. Even when she was a new born. I had to wake her for feeding. 😂 But it is a great video and I find it important that you talk about all the bad things a pacifier can do to our little ones if used longer than six months.

Is it alright to wean off the pacifier at 3 months? We’ve had no choice as we have to send our baby girl to day care and they don’t allow pacifiers. :/ it’s been tough to withhold it from her as she cries. But since your video mentioned to wean at 6 months, I wonder if it’s alright to do so at 3? She’s been using it only for sleep and naps to calm down. Will she be able to learn to self soothe at this age?

Hi Emma! Love your videos! One aspect of pacifiers I still have questions on is their ability to prevent thumb/hand sucking, which is a considerably worse habit to break since you can't take it away. Is there any evidence of preventing thumb-sucking if you take it away at 6mo vs older? Or does thumb-sucking usually start earlier so they'd be past the risk of it by 6mo? I would hate to take the pacifier away too early and start an even worse habit. Thanks again for your videos!

We used blanket swaddles after birth, changed to a Velcro swaddle eventually but she suffered so much gas and was a very active sleeper we added a second swaddle that was weighted. She also still has a lot of the startle reflex. She is fine with both even though she fights them at first and will sleep through the night with them but she will cry bloody murder once being in them and basically cries to sleep. Been binging your videos lately. We debated very heavily to drop the pacifier when our daugther was around 6 months of age, but ultimately decided that she should keep the pacifier because her sleep was incredibly fragile... I now sense this might have been a mistake. She is coming up on 9 months, daytime naps are running like clockwork, and her goodnight ritual is actually going pretty well too. She is usually calm, and falls asleep within 15-20 minutes. The problem is she will rouse from sleep about every hour all night long, although sometimes she will sleep for 2 hours between needing help. We had a big go at this whole "teaching her to link sleep cycles on her own" thing a month or so ago, but we bailed out completely on it, because if she is not consoled immediately every time she wakes, she would begin to cry. Not the fussy cry or the tired cry, both of which we are familiar with. No, her nighttime waking cry starts as a fussy, but quickly develops into a "I'm literally on fire" cry. Full volume, complete panic, and no end in sight. We have tried to see if she can "calm herself" from this ultimate panic state, but we simply cannot sit by and watch her in this level of distress. We've been through all the usual nighttime intervention reportoire of rocking, holding, gentle singing, humming, patting, stroking, walking around with her on our arms or in a carrier, they all worked to console her for a day or two and then it was no good any more and she would just launch into the same panic cry in our arms. The only thing that still works is the tit to calm her down, and then the pacifier once she is calm, which means its all on my wife and she is awake at least 5, but often 10 times every night. It is NOT one of these "sleep regressions", because this has been our life now for 5 months. We are certain it is not hunger neither, because she's been eating solids since 5 months, and she is stuffing her chubby little face with everything we put in front of her. We're pretty much at the end of our rope and I wonder if this is something you have experienced? Bit of a long wall of text here but I have lost all ability to communicate in brief and consice sentences...
@dasvenson765
@dasvenson765 11 месяцев назад
We are going through the exact same thing. At about 6 months our son went through a sleep regression and started walking up every hour at night time and the only thing that settles him down is a quick breastfeed or dummy, which is also all on my wife pretty much. He's now at almost 9 months and still the same. It's also not food because he is eating so much solids during the day. We are thinking we may just need to persist more through the phasing out of the dummy and just be miserable for a month. Did you sort your daughter out?

Hi Annika, we've actually started working with a sleep expert to help our 7 month old sleep more than 20-30 mins at a time. Our little one loves to nurse to sleep, but we were told by the expert it's a habit we need to break to help him fall asleep in the crib rather than be asleep before being placed in the crib. The reasoning was that when baby wakes up in a place he wasn't when he fell asleep, it's startling and alarming to them, which causes the panic on waking up. We modified this to nurse *almost* to sleep and put him in the crib happy and very sleepy. Works like a charm!

@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Год назад
Hi Mike! The risk of SIDS is highest from 1-6 months of age. Using a pacifier at the onset of sleep is just one recommendation on ways that you can reduce the risk of SIDS. The other main ones being: - sleeping the infant on their back on a flat, firm surface with no bedding or loose blankets (or toys,crib bumpers,etc) - sleeping the infant on a separate sleep surface but in the same room as the infants parents or care giver. So if you are doing all of those things then not using a pacifier for some sleeps should be ok. In regards to if you should continue offering your bub the pacifier for some naps and not others. It really depends on you and your bub. If your bub falls asleep quicker one way over the other and it is easier for you then I would just do that one way. But if your bub doesn’t care either way then continue doing it as you are.

Hi! I totally understand the fear about removing it when you are finally getting some sleep. At 1 years of age, your little one will be able to find the pacifier independently during the night and place it back in their mouth. So if your little one is not waking frequently during the night and having good day naps then I wouldn’t worry about trying to remove it yet if you’re not ready. Just try and limit the use of the pacifier to naps and bedtime to reduce the risk of oral damage from sucking a pacifier.

Emma I love your videos, but why are comments turned off on your Ms Rachel video? I find it suspicious that you're not willing to hear what people have to say about their own experiences
@WhimsicalCrochet
@WhimsicalCrochet Год назад
I’m assuming she turned the comments off because she was strictly giving evidence based facts and wanted parents to be able to see the facts & not have the comment section be a place to discuss parents opinions. There’s plenty of other forums where people can discuss their opinion of ms Rachel. Of course multiple parents are going to have differing opinions, but that’s doesn’t change the facts behind the videos. & people personal experience or opinion doesn’t really matter when you’re trying to educate people of actual facts. It’s like (to a very much less degree) when someone says you shouldn’t given your baby processed foods under the age of 1 & then states the reasons why, & then people hop on and are like “but I gave my baby processed foods and they turned out fine, they’re perfectly healthy.” It doesn’t matter what someone’s personal experience was, they are trying to educate people with evidence based studies and then they can decide on their own (without the influence of peoples opinions) what they would want to do with the child.

This is one reason I’ve become thankful my 6 month old never got into pacifiers. I tried to get him to soothe with one but he just never got into it. Now he’ll nap for one to two hours without a problem. I know there’s benefits to them when their young but if your baby never really takes to it, that seems fine, too. My 6 month old babbles constantly now Lolol

What about baby sucking her own finger do they have any effects

This. ☝🏾my baby started this at 3 months and is now 8 months, still doing so. She has been waking up frequently throughout the night again for the last couple months and idk why. I wonder if it's bc she has become independent on the ducking of her fingers to get her to sleep
@WhimsicalCrochet
@WhimsicalCrochet Год назад
@@kaodiumerah2830 by like 3-4 months old babies are able to find their own fingers to smooth themselves back to sleep, so she wouldn’t necessarily need help as she could smooth herself. maybe she’s teething? That is one of the most common causes of disturbed sleep.

Does it works if baby refuses pacifier but uses mommy breast for his pacifier? XD My 3 month old uses my nipples to sleep and stay asleep. I would like to make it stops this at some point because I am starting to be very tired. He loves pacifier when he was little but since he is 9 weeks, he doesn't want any of them, only mama >

Wow, I've just wrote basically a same comment, good to know I'm not alone. I don't mind nursing him 2-3 times at night but it's way more than that!

Exactly the same here 😭 especially in the mornings when I have things to do. I've given him a pacifier, sometimes he takes it. Other times he wants to use me. And the pacifier too, he'll only take if I put honey or glycerine on it. When I put it for a nap, in like 10-20 minutes his up because the pacifier fell out. Sometimes I take the pacifier out when I put him to sleep. But the same thing happens, 10-20mins his awake, looking for something to suck. Very rarely he'll sleep without sucking. I introduced the pacifier because somedays he'll suck on me for hours. Or he'll fall asleep and then his awake in a short time to suck again Can someone please give us ideas to help?

What if she can't hold it in her mouth at all, it's like she keeps spitting it out. She only liked it when she was a newborn now she won't take it so I stopped.

Some bub's do choose to stop using the pacifier which is fine. If they don't want it there is nothing you can do to make them take it.

There’s another pacifier weaning method that works really well that I don’t see mentioned very often! To start, take a pair of scissors and snip a tiny hole at the tip of your babies pacifier. After a few days, make the hole a tiny bit bigger, & keep doing that every few days until the entire tip of the pacifier is gone. Once there’s nothing left to suck, your baby will probably ask for the other pacifiers because he thinks one is broken, but just make sure you make relatively the same size hole in each one at the same time. Eventually it’ll be nearly impossible to suck and your little one will decide on their own to no longer use it. Just keep giving them the option, even when there’s no actual rubber part left.

Also wir nutzen den Schnuller nur zur Beruhigung und nur zum einschlafen. Wir entfernen den Schnuller bevor wir sie ins Bett legen das klappt in der Regel super.

What do you do if your breastfeeding baby refuses a pacifier and looks for me to breastfeeding him at night frequently… basically im his human pacifier

Thank you for the videos, Emma! My daughter is 16 month old and still uses pacifiers for naps and night sleep, but does not wake up if it fells out, neither she uses it in other occasions. It does take veeeery long until she falls asleep and lately she started to drop her daynap, I am afraid it would be even worse without it

Ok, so I think my baby‘s pacifier are my boobs and just staying by his side to help him fall asleep doesn't work as he keeps looking at them and getting nervous.. then he's waking multiple times at night, looking for the boobie.
