She was Outstanding. But it wasn’t often she really got a chance to shine. “Summer Of My German Soldier “ with the great Kristy McNichol ❗️ Esther Rolle gave an Award Winning Performance in that Made-For-TV movie. Really blew me away. 📻🙂
It was real, she been wanting to say that to him for too long. Sadly the back story was they all didn't act like a family on stage and argued a lot because JJ had all the spot light rolls
@@Yahshuailove I heard that too. She was a much better actress than he was an actor. She deserved so much better than that part. And to be overshadowed by his buffoonery had to be embarrassing.
Even though John Amos was about 20 years younger than Esther Rolle 😉 Also note, Sherman Hemsley was 21 years younger than Isabel Sanford on The Jeffersons.
thats it and in time when back against the wall she gonna send Thelma or Mike to get what desired assistance needed......... but back then we took pride in the struggle.... i agree being in the rackets not good. but she always resisted advancing the family. when she got her shot to leave she got out and not do nothing to get her family out.
@shaftomite007 real parenting is that sometimes you need to slap (not always physically) some harsh reality to their kids. Majority of the time, parents will still have that home's "door" open for them but at that particular moment in time, those kids thinking they're "grown" and know everything, letting them know that their actions aren't acceptable, endangers them, and other members of the family, even if it is with the best of intentions.
I put my son out when he joined a gang. He stayed a week at my momma house and asked if he could come back home. He graduated high school. He married, good job, house and a son.
The episode where James confronted a thug who shot J. J. was equally moving. I saw that episode decades ago when it first aired and I've never forgotten it. Shows like 'Good Times' and 'All in the Family' were the greatest of all time. I wish we had such meaningful shows today.
“Summer Of My German Soldier “. Esther Rolle, and Kristy McNichol. The 2 of them together were just “Dynomite ❗️” ( pun intended). One of Esther’s best performances. 📻🙂
Let's bring back great parenting. If communities were filled with parents like her, there would be very few robberies, rapes, and murders. I grew up in those times, and they were times when people had some respect for their parents and their communities.
The problem is that the system is now designed to destroy that. The only way we're going to have that again is to get rid of the war on drugs and the private prison industry that profits off and perpetuates it Suddenly, almost of the money funding gang activity dries up, which in turn makes it a lot easier to clean up to streets and get people to stay in school Of course, we'll have to make a high school diploma actually matter again, but 1 thing at a time
This was back when doing the right thing mattered. Integrity, honesty, and following after truth counted for something. These days the script has been flipped.
I remember watching that episode. I remember when there was a bust drug bust and they didn't find JJ. When JJ called his mom to see if could move back home and his mother said that he could move back home. That was a serious episode.
I saw a Court clip that aired THIS year where a Woman Murdered the Father of her BABY in cold blood and her Mother straight up told the Courts to give this DEVIL a sterilization and the DEATH PENALTY and was like,"This DEVIL is not my Daughter!" 😳
@@cjjonez no it's true. I've been to too many funerals. I push the envelope quite a bit throughout my life and still do in certain areas. But that's a little different than taking shortcuts.
@CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525 you feel your way. I know differently. just a point of order. I'd you don't get were you desire it's not a short cut.... u might be thinking off the beaten path🤔 😁😁 🤷🏾♂️ijs!!!!
That's what some mothers should do today put their foot down give them that tough love if they can't do right let them go and let them know you mean it
Not sad, but very realistic and actually uplifting. This was my mom. All five of us ended up graduating from University, and are living very wonderful lives
It didn’t break my heart. Being disrespectful to your Mom gets you put out. If he was so grown he would’ve out on his own instead of coming back to Florida house
My parents kicked me out when I was 12 and I lived near the railroad tracks for years. It would get loud at times but I was always so drunk it didn't matter. Brings back good memories.
@@TheMysticOracle144 thanks for the tip Captain Obvy, but we're way ahead of you. A fictional character, yes. But one who portrayed the thousands, if not millions, of mothers out there who were like her in real life. She became part of the family for the millions of TV viewers who tuned in every week to watch her dish out the kind of good old fashioned motherly love that was common at that time, but is so severely lacking these days unfortunately. We miss those days and we miss those times when mothers were respectable and traditional. Home with her husband and family being the backbone. Warm, loving and actually INVOLVED, yet stern with rules, expectations and requirements. All things that a mother should be and always was before social media, mental illness and drugs took over and having children out of wedlock with every Tom, Dick and Harry became the norm. So what is simply "just a character" to you is a bittersweet reminder of the past who represents a time and fond childhood memories long gone by. She felt like our mother too in a way and made us feel like we were part of the Evans household, and for that she is deeply loved and will forever be missed by the many of us out there who hold such fond memories of her along with the rest of the Evans family. Truly unique, there was only one Florida Evans, and there will never be another.
This was some powerful acting. Norman Lear had a big brass pair. He wasn't afraid to go head-on with the social issues of society. But it was definitely the acting that conveyed the message, and boy did it ever, with scenes like this!
@@kelvinmorris1991 I think it was a combination of fear and grief she was experiencing and JJ’s choice pushed her to her limit. Programming mixed with pain can do that
I remember this episode first aired, although Florida was right, but can’t change the fact that it was J.J. who kept them from being evicted, he was the one who came up with the rent money.
I never got that scene. When the Cops opened the closet door, it looked like there was absolutely NOTHING in that closet. Next scene, JJ is hiding behind a mop. 🤨
Shows like this are priceless this show tought me about family values John Amos jj and the crew were real actors and actresses that deserves our thanks and appreciation
I once had to do that to my son! It was the hardest and the best thing I did for both of us. It taught him about respect and it taught me that tough love was real love. Today we are closer than ever. ❤
Mama’s didn’t play in those days.James was strict when he died , she kicked right into where he left off at no nonsense. He looking shocked cuz Florida rarely ever cursed . Only 2 times this time and when James died.
