Dont even waste time with the yeast and brown sugar, just get several beets from the grocery store and blend them up in the blender and add the beet to the water in the black bucket along with some dawn, the beets contain a compound called Geosmin that is used by researchers to trap mosquitos, its found naturally in the soil and comes up in an aeroso form when it rains and that attracts the mosquitos, the mosquito larvae die in the bucket because the dawn prevents them from leaving when they mature. I use beet peels in my bug zapper and that attracts hundreds of thousands of mosquitos and stops the cycle after they die and the larvae die in the bucket. I'm going on two years now since I first used the beets and the mosquito population is still down to virtually nothing and last season had some record rain.

@daveborchard2019
@daveborchard2019 6 месяцев назад
You can also build a fly trap. Make a cylinder or cube shaped trap with screening on all sides with an opening at the bottom of the trap. Form an inverted cone attached to the bottom of the trap. The small inverted cone opening is in the middle of the space inside the trap. Put fly bait in the bottom of the trap, which is slightly raised from the ground. The flies are attracted to the bait. When the flies are ready to fly away, their natural tendency is to fly upward. It’s very unnatural for flies to go downward to leave the bait. Then the flies buzz around the inverted cone and walk up the inverted cone, and then the flies trap themselves. It’s very difficult for the flies to find the small opening in the inverted cone, and if they find the opening, they usually re-trap themselves because it’s very unnatural for flies to try to fly or walk downward to escape the trap. Over time, you’ll catch hundreds of thousands of flies. You can put the fly trap in a large container of water for several hours to shorten the time for them to die. But when there are hundreds of trapped flies that are buzzing around in the fly trap, that will attract more flies which will also be caught. The flies do all the work to catch themselves. The bait needs to be changed every couple of days. After several days, you’ll notice a significant decrease in the number of flies you see flying around your yard.

Hummingbirds 'love to eat mosquitos' (their probable main food source) ... not only use a hummingbird feeder, but also plant flowers that which attracts hummingbirds: large 'clumps' of ... **bee balm**, cone flowers, **cardinal flowers**, zinnias, etc. etc. (also attracts 'clear-wing'/hummingbird moths & 'other garden pollinators' !!!) If you live in the eastern US where only 'highly territorial' ruby-throated hummingbirds predominate .... plant the attractive flowers in 'clumps' in multiple far distant & separated as possible locations on your property. To attract hummingbirds to establish their territories in mid-early spring, I put up 2" wide X 18" long RED ribbons and simply tie them to tree branches near my early installed hummingbird feeders - those feeders should be 'up' well before the hummingbirds arrive..

I put out two spartan mosquito traps, one on each side of my four acres. Have not had a single mosquito bite ever since. In the hotter part of the summer you need to add a little extra water to them. But by the end of the season the traps are so full of mosquitoes that it is a black sludge. I suspect it is the same as what he made but cost $20 for two. I also out mosquito pucks in the stream the goes through the property. Great video.

I am soooo going to try these traps out- thank you! And btw, if you get bitten, we have found that a dense paste of baking soda (w/ water) tends to soothe the itch for good- I usually put a tiny blob of paste right over the center of the bite, then place a band-aid over it to keep the paste on, usually for at least a few hours. It seems the most popular itch/bite products have the active ingredient of sodium bicarbonate, so this is how we came to try this remedy out :).

I have a tip for gnats that swarm your face. Put on a hat and put something tall in it. The annoying pests actually go to the top of the target (you are the target), and thus will stay clear of your face. I know it sounds stupid, but I tested it in my pasture. It worked. I was stunned. For black flies (biting fly that is bigger than a gnat, and smaller than a housefly) spread a product called “Save the Baby” wherever your clothing ends…collars, wrist, sleeves…as well as around your hairline. They like those protected margins. The product is similar to Vicks vapor rub, but works better. I don’t know why. I tested this in upstate NY and Virginia. It works.

If a mosquito does fall for the trap, they drown before they even lay their eggs. Spinosad in that water would not make a difference. If some mosquitos notice the lack of surface tension on the first trap and fly away before they drown, he was saying hopefully they'd find the spinosad/water solution so at least their larvae could not survive.

The key to successful mosquito control is totally wipe out the source where mosquitos lay there eggs which isn’t realistic,that being said the best approach is to identify the source of water they lay their eggs and treat that source with a larvicide. Coconut oil in food grade liquid form applied to pools of standing water with active larvae present will drown the larvae before they emerge as adult biting mosquitos.
