Mr.King, as soon as I saw Bc7 I thought of the famous Petrosian Bg7 game! :) The variation with Ne4+ and Rf5+ to freeup the diagonal for the queen to cut back and then win the Rook on e7 with a skewer at the end is absolutely brilliant!

Wonderful reverse fianchetto at the end. It always looks odd to me to see Petrosian playing White, all the games I grew up with in the books he seemed to be Black grinding out a win from rocks.

Great game by Ray. The puzzle rush champion usually comes up with some good ones. I always root for Ray, but he never quite puts together enough good games to cross the finish line at the US Championships. Shame, heck of a player. Flies under the radar, due to so many other good GM's in the US these days. I did remember the Petrosian game(thanks to you) but it didn't help me find Bc7. That's on me, I guess. :)

I was thinking of KD7 because the King needs protection from its pieces and thus it needs to get to the Queen side. Probably not great calculation but that was my idea.

No lie i thought Kd7 with no assistance. I thought it was the most obvious move actually because that allows the queen, the rook and the bishop to be able to block all the different checks.

It was my first thought as well. During times of havoc I often find myself able to easily break convention and think “what is needed here??” Intuitively I thought it was the best choice, but I didn’t really calculate, and I can’t calculate as deep as those lines without serious effort, so I really don’t get credit. Also, I didn’t really look at Be6, which I would normally consider very quickly. So I can’t say I’d really be able to play Kd7 over Be6, but still my intuition tells me that’s the best move because of the rook blocking the check from f7, which I consider to be the most important threat. (Though Be6 covers that. I could just feel strongly about it because of hindsight bias.)

@paulgoogol2652
@paulgoogol2652 10 месяцев назад
Because Be6 exists. Kd7 looks like black will never get his bishop and rook out and it is correct. It's playing for a draw at best. But you have to calculate concretely if you are a serious player and not a gamble type.
@maelstrom57
@maelstrom57 10 месяцев назад
@@paulgoogol2652 The king doesn't go to d7 to STAY on d7, it's headed for c7 and b8 if need be.
@paulgoogol2652
@paulgoogol2652 10 месяцев назад
@@maelstrom57 what then? C7 is a terrible square because white has the dark square bishop. I know people intuitively want to run away with the king. Stronger players feel a greater need for piece activity. But my point was that in this kind of position all intuitive moves that aren't based on (good) calculation are like a sort of gambling.
