This live dig centers on a ruined Norman church on a hill in Norfolk. This National Trust site promises to be the richest source of finds that Time Team has yet seen, with previous evidence of human occupation from most periods in antiquity. This requires several trenches, including the longest one that Time Team has ever dug. They start with some fieldwalking and metal detecting, before digging in earnest. Among many finds are a bronze age arrow head, a medieval tiled floor, coins, and several well-preserved skeletons. One skull shows clear evidence of having been brutally slaughtered by a swordsman on horseback. The team is joined by Helen Geake, Neil Holbrook, Andrew Rogerson, pottery expert Paul Blinkhorn, osteoarchaeologist Margaret Cox, and historian John Blair. Celebrities Sandi Toksvig and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall also drop in. Hugh and Victor help Saxon re-enactor Russell Scott to recreate a bronze artifact from scratch.

I'm thankful for not being born even 100 years ago, let alone 500. I get a good chuckle hearing people bemoan modern technology & society & wax poetically about the simplicity of ages past. I like a good Medieval/Renaissance faire, but a long weekend is more than enough. I'm far too attached to antibiotics, analgesics, anesthetics & modern dentistry to name a few things. Food delivery & take out is up there too. 😆

The late Victor Ambrose really contributed a lot. He passed not that long ago; last year or the year before, I think? Time Team's new episodes will sometimes use his vast archive of art to this day, with his estate's permission. I believe their online shop also sells his book!

Being an American from SE Texas who loves history. Medieval and ancient British history is by far the most interesting to me. For someone who has no passport, most americans never intend to leave the country, were fine here. Britain would be the one exception. Medieval Welsh castles, Roman ruins, Norman and Anglo-Saxon villages. Nothing like it. Awesome

I got a passport as soon as I could and everyone I know off the top of my head has one, and we all love to travel. Im from Pennsylvania so Im almost as far from Texas as you can get, so maybe not wanting to travel is a regional thing? Im just very curious, I’m not knocking your preferences or anything. Im a fellow American who is also fascinated by history so we do that that in common haha

to my knowledge, from what I've learned from the American side of the family, it's not that Americans don't want to leave, but rather that they learn so little about the rest of the world that they don't know what's out there, and then can't afford to go anywhere because they're not paid a liveable wage

A poll done within the last 5 years and I can't imagine it changed much because of the cough cough, around 60% have never left. It’s amazing how many archaeological sites in England are just not dug at all! In where I am in Canada we have so few older actual historical buildings and ruins that if there were a site like this people would be ALL OVER IT. Indigenous people here tread pretty lightly! Probably much better for the planet honestly.

I had teachers and fellow students constantly telling me that I should become an archeologist back when I was still in school in my early 20s. The problem is. Canada sadly does not care for it's native people, and there is sadly scant to no digs or investigations in my area at least. And finding any was like Jackalope hunting. As a history enthusiast, that lifestyle would have been right up my alley. But the trades it is for this 30-something man.

You may already be aware of the Ontario Archaeological Society and the Archaeology Society of Alberta. The Ontario society for sure has taken steps to partner with Indigenous communities, and both would probably encourage volunteering. If they're not engaged in your area, someone would point you in the right direction.

I feel similarly, though I’m from the other side of the continent. I know that the area my own house sits on was once important to the people that lived here before Spanish explorers arrived. When building a road they found tons of pottery, arrowheads, and human remains. But the state blocked efforts to properly excavate and document the site because they just wanted the road to get built as quickly as possible. It’s a bit maddening to know that there’s artifacts and information about a race and culture that no longer exists right under my feet, and I can’t do anything to access it.

Martin Meisenbacher - The trades is a better idea. I got my Bachelor's degree in Archaeology back in 2001 (38 years old), went on to start my Masters but had to give it up to care for a family member. While it is interesting and I loved every minute of it - the classes and working for the university Cultural Resource Management office mainly doing digs and surveys for the department of transportation when they did roadwork - it definitely isn't what you might think. I got the degree to prove to myself that I could do it and it is something I wanted before I got too old. I've loved History and Anthroplogy since I was a kid. Stay with a career where you will have a steady paycheck and reliable work with benefits. If you can find a way to volunteeer on a dig that can be rewarding too. The field is very competitive, you have to do ALOT of butt kissing and smoozing to get anything and even then maybe not. Also had to deal with favoritism, overinflated egoes of fellow students and the regular CRM office workers. I truly thought being in school and working with people who were of a similar mind would be fun and rewarding, it was to a point but then people can be such people. I'm in the U.S. (New York State) and my focus was French Colonial history / Contact period, and prehistoric Native America. Luckily I had more practical training in other career fields to fall back on. If you read this message I hope it is helpful and puts your mind at rest that you made a better career choice.

I love the title. 😂 Also the energy of the team is great. One man running around, commenting, a new trench every other scene and not a minute without something happening, no time to breath. That's just great because that's how many of my days look. 😂 Well, I don't have a team and don't dig around but the energy often is the same. Only in my case it happens because I often can't focus... 🤷 "I have to clean dishes and do some homew- oh look, a bird on the balkony..." and an hour later I am wondering, what I am still doing on the balkony and what I was doing before.😂 And no, it's not a degenerative neural syndrome of some sort. Has been like this my whole life. Anyway- thank you VERY much for the content. Sitting around at home after a work accident and the resulting arthroscopy of my knee has been way less boring as it could have been without you folks (and some other content creators).

The way Mick Aston and Neal Holbrook do things very differently as the leaders of the dig team are very obvious here. Mick with with his slower geo-phys, field walking and so leading him to where a exploratry trench goes, to Neal's much quicker putting in a trench on some other person's advice.

The franchise has expanded, and Im wondering if any, or much thot has been given to selling merch such as.... reproductions at maybe two levels if worth-- of some of the finds, and even this: actual trowel used by whichever members! How terrific for your Yankee cousins to be able to brag, "this trowel was used in_____, a British Roman villa, as it was uncovered [thus n such date], or Caressa used this trowel to explore some_____ bones, from ___ Century"! Heaven knows, we'll never feel the dirt of our ancestral home! Btw, that ring used in the introduction.... I want a repop of it! Keep the saving of history priority.... There is no future without it. Killed by someone on horseback with a sword sounds like a battle victim. Could well be from a Viking raid on the monastery. If it’s a Viking raid it’s probably 9th century. By the 10th or 11th century the Scandinavians were Christians and so would be unlikely to attack a monastery.

Actually, yes. They were made by melting beeswax onto flat pieces of wood. Scratch your notes onto your wax pad. Then, when you're finished with them or have copied them onto something more permanent, put the pad someplace warm so the wax melts flat again. They were in use since at least the era of the Roman Empire; some of these pads were found at forts along Hadrian's wall. Even though the wax was gone, archeologists could decipher some of what was written on them because someone had a heavy hand.

Can someone please explain how an area that was a peninsula during prehistory, is now kilometers away from the sea? I understand uplift is a thing, but that would not appear to explain the case in this episode since sea levels rising separated Britain from Mainland Europe. If sea levels rose hundreds of feet, that would mean that the uplift caused the land to rise those same hundreds of feet plus a considerable amount more. Or is it just a case that some areas underwent far more uplift than others?

All this is very interesting and some it brings back memories of my time doing Archaeological field work but one thing that bothers me no end is the guy (feathered hat guy) and others who are constantly laughing about the skeletons. Sorry but any British person griping about metal detectorists "pinching bits of our culture" have SOME NERVE, considering how much of other people's culture the Crown has pinched over the centuries, and still hoards to this day, in the British Museum. Also I don't think the average person has any idea just how much of a museum's treasures and artifacts never even go on display for the public to view, just sit in dark old boxes in the back, usually the vast MAJORITY of objects exist in perpetuity like that. So if you ask me, it's one hell of a privileged statement to say that an ordinary person is acting like a thief when he/she goes out and puts in the long hours and hard work (yes metal detecting is hard, certainly kills your back and knees after a while), and finds little things they can sell for income. Why does this guy have more right to it than they do?

A true archologist would never fling a shovelful of dirt away like that woman did. Archology digs are done carefully with brushes and spoons so as to not lose anything of value and they take years not days. This show irritates me. It came up in my feed. I normally don't watch it and I probably won't finish the episode.
