I didn't think I'd like this monitor, but after using it, I've changed my mind... Particularly it's color accuracy and pricing compared to other similar 32" and 4K monitors out there. Definitely worth a look if you're looking for a new screen or want to upgrade your existing one.

Nice video, thanks. I have a BenQ BL2711U from 2017 which also has MacBook mode. I was hoping the brightness on this one would be better than 250nits. On my Mac Mini I have an LG Ultrafine 5K and the 4K BL2711U. The brightness on the LG is far superior for long hours of watching. Even taking into account all the colour accuracy stuff, for my workflow, the LG wins every time. And I have less than perfect eyes. Bright displays…ahhhh.
@CreatedTech
@CreatedTech Год назад
Yeah the brightness is probably the only main issue with this monitor, but of course, it is geared towards designers which typically only ever stay in the 200-250 nit range. For me, the brightness is acceptable and I didn't have too many issues, but it just depends on the light levels in the room. If you have a bit of glare hitting the screen, it can get annoying.
@tomcollins6989
@tomcollins6989 Год назад
Yeah the lack of going bright is going to be an issue for me. I work in design at a top tier global agency closely with the team and a 3D artist who has given up using his benq monitor due to its lack of brightness. He is mostly working of his MacBook Pros monitor due to how good it is and the brightness. . I disagree with the comment about designers not needing bright monitors. I am struggling to find one without dropping a lot of cash on the apple monitor. I need to know the brightness is decent to avoid eye strain. 😢.
@CreatedTech
@CreatedTech Год назад
@@tomcollins6989 I am certainly not saying that all designers do not need bright monitors. All I'm saying is that this monitor is mostly geared specifically towards color professionals/designers. For maximally accurate colors, you need screen brightness at a certain level (200-250). There are of course those who do design work and don't need to be in the 200-250 nit range at all times. So if you need more brightness, this monitor is not a good choice.

ViewSonic VP3256-4K is the closest competitor and runs for about $600 in the United States. HP U32 31.5" 4K is another similar option for about $500 although I'm not too familiar with that one. Looking at the specs on paper, both have good color accuracy with USB-C charging and some ports as well. One of my concerns with OLED in displays (and laptops) is the risk of burn-in. While it is addressed in modern designs, it still has limitations. For example, I have a fantastic LG G1 that has brilliant frames. However, it can only run in slide show mode as it needs to address burn-in risk (I can't leave it on the same image, as I can with Samsung Frame TV which I have in my home office, and that one is LCD). It is less of an issue with motion involved where scene is changing frequently, not so much in a laptop/computer display.

3:50 - can someone explain this concept of brightness to color accuracy? I think this is the first time I heard it in a monitor review video..I can imagine it's kinda like the isophonic curves in relationship to the perceived levels of loudness of different frequencies, but I'm just guessing at this point.. And if it's true that 250 nits is all you need, then what's with the 1000nit hype? Or even 600 nit? What's the point? And if you are a professional and require color accurate monitor, then you don't set up your desk with a window behind your back...
@CreatedTech
@CreatedTech Год назад
Most of the colorspaces (e.g. sRGB) are designed to work best at a certain brightness level (nits). Typically this is pretty low, sometimes as low as 80 nits but usually around 100-200 nits. There are a couple of reasons why. For example print media, images on a poster or magazine obviously won't "pop" like they do on a bright digital screen. So it's best to edit color on a darker screen, that more closely matches print media on paper/posters/magazines. Also adjusting color with too bright a screen can often "wash out" colors, meaning the color of the final product might not be accurate. There is no real 1000 nit hype. 1000 nits can typically only be achieved through HDR, and even then, 1000 nits is just the brightest point of HDR on the screen. So it's kind of a gimmick and doesn't mean the entire screen can achieve 1000 nits (nor would you ever WANT the entire screen to be 1000 nits, it would be near blinding). Anything above 500 nits is ONLY beneficial if you're editing/viewing HDR content specifically, or you need a really bright screen for working outdoors (e.g. a laptop screen). Personally I don't understand why people hate on monitors with a "low" brightness level like this one. Staring at an overly bright monitor all day will wreck your eyes long-term. The screen should be as dim as possible, while still being comfortable to look at. It's much better to control the light levels in your room, if possible.

@@CreatedTech Makes sense. I also try to be conscious of the marketing tricks and just seriously look at tech from a perspective that allows you to prioritize you and your real needs instead of being driven by marketing bs. The more reviews I watch, the more I see how much bs there is and it’s just …sad. Like someone is constantly trying to remove the humane from the human… if you know what I mean. I am currently using my super old Samsung 24” screen from 2008 I think. I switched to mac mini from my mac book pro recenty and had to use something before I find a suitable display and you know what? This monitor works amazingly well. It’s about 15 years old, has about 150 nits max I think, 190x1080 resolution, but the quality is amazing - no bad pixels, a slight lack of uniformity (not noticible unless you do a monitor test), nothing is washed out, no issues with refreshing, no smudging.. If I told you it’s an office display from 2020 you would probably believe it :) Now, I’m trying to find a display that will serve me another decade and I’m drowning to be honest. The amount of info, usability scenarios, parameters, marketing coverups over what those really mean…When did technology become so complicated? Do you recall PCs from the 90s and HTML4 webpages? If it were damaging, we wouldn't have blue light receptors in our eyes in the first place _(hence why we can't see into infra-red or ultraviolet, those two ends of the light spectrum actually _*_are_*_ the ones that are damaging, especially ultraviolet)_ . The _real_ reason you get tired, sore eyes after long use is down to three factors; the fact your blink rate reduces by quite a significant amount whilst viewing a screen ( _any_ screen) so your eyes tend to dry out more, being exposed to bright lights for a prolonged period of time, and the fact that your lens is always focussing on a single point in space, rather than the more regular shifts in focal length and constant small adjustments it usually makes throughout that same period of time when _not_ using a screen - this also tends to cause fatigue in the muscles controlling the lens shape, as well as altering the pressure in the eye behind the lens. All three things combine to send those familiar "tired, sore eyes" messages to your brain, in an attempt to get you to stop doing whatever it is you were doing so your eyes can return to a more natural, healthy operation. Basically - you need to take more breaks (and longer breaks) and go do something else that _doesn't_ involve screens of any type. So yes, "eye care technology" is _entirely_ a marketing ploy and almost completely worthless. I'm not going to call it a scam, per-se, but considering the information out there debunking this myth, it's getting pretty darned close to it at this point - especially considering they usually bump up the price of their products any time they include this nonsense. The only thing keeping it from being a scam is the fact that most "eye care" adjustments they make also end up reducing the overal brightness of the screen - and _that's_ the _only_ part that _actually_ makes a difference and reduces eye fatigue. And that's something you could just do yourself with _any_ monitor, without needing any "special technology" or "features" that bump up the unit price ... just reduce the brightness level once in a while during your daily use using the monitors own brightness controls. If you do that a few times during, say, an 8-hour shift (like three or four times) and keep it lower for a little while (say half an hour to an hour) before returning it to the brighter setting, you'll likely find your eyes will be far less tired at the end.

@@cocomatef Yeah no, I don't. I've done _plenty_ of research on the topic, since I've had problems with my eyes since I was born and so I take extra care to look after the eyesight I've got. Even went as far as to ask multiple optometrists to make sure I wasn't also reading false claims and "research". They _all_ said it's an outright lie - blue light doesn't do _any_ damage to a persons eyesight. Your eyes might get a bit tired if exposed to the same frequencies for long periods of time, but a mere 5-10 minutes looking at _anything else_ is enough to reset that fatigue. No permanent damage done. Just because you'd rather believe the false hype around this sort of thing doesn't mean others have to. It's like still believing that sitting too close to a TV will make your eyes square. And then you grow up, do some research and learn it's false.

I don't understand these comments. If you want a native Mac resolution monitor, your ONLY option is a $1600 USD 5K Apple Studio Display (or the $6000 6K Pro Display XDR). Don't want/can't afford to pay $1600? Guess what, 4K is the highest you can get!

@@CreatedTech Considering how macOS handles non native resolutions it is really unfortunate that Mac users find themselves cornered this way. I’ve seen 4K monitors and they are great with Windows 96ppi mode. But there is no way I want to look at macOS that does not pixel snap, so anything that’s not 5K is not a great monitor for Macs! Not to mention the performance drop in graphics while using scaled modes.

@@CharisCh Not quite. The LG 5K Ultrafine is no longer available for sale from the Apple store and is being phased out by LG themselves. There is very limited stock of it left. Regardless, it's a vastly inferior product compared to the Studio Display, so you'd be mad to buy it. Soon the Studio and XDR displays will be the only 5K options.

@@CreatedTech At least in France right now I can buy it directly from LG for ~700€. The overall build quality is indeed not good but the panel itself is very nice, and a very good value for money compared to the Studio display!

don't buy BenQ monitor, they sucks. I am commenting from Benq PD3220U, had to visit service center more than 5 times in 2 years, nothing solved. and now getting ghosting around 2CM round the edges. I don't have the warranty anymore. More than 6 months it waited into their service center. Horrible experience. Don't waste your money with low quality brands. They are small because of a reason.

I don't even know why they bothered adding that MacBook mode, this monitor is useless. 140 PPI is bad and 4K is useless on monitors above 24". If you turn on 2x scaling everything is going to be to big, if you don't use it, everything is going to be too small and ugly also. If you're buying a 27" monitor, either go for 1440p and have an ugly picture or get ready to pay for Apple's 5K thing. Because your third choice with a 4K montior is to use 1.5x scaling and it's ass. 4K monitors are useless. This one is useless. Don't do that shit, even if you don't care at all, don't get a 4K monitor, don't stimulate the lazy ass market to produce these useless products. Remember all the plastic waste nonsense from the 90s? Like the shit from DankPods reviews? This monitors and it's alternatives is the same thing from 2022.

yup, noone should buy a 60Hz monitor for this much money now that you can get 4k 144Hz gaming monitors for the same money and they work just fine with MBPs over DP (not HDMI).
