This NYC Ferry Crash was a Complete Shock 

FUN FACT: This boat crashed at 2003 and crashed again at 2010

Most stories have a Beginning, Middle and End..... Not this one.

Not one word about why it didn’t slow? Kind of skipped over the important part didn’t you?

I heard this was a pretty gory accident. Someone even got decapitated and several people lost their arms/legs

Too bad Spiderman wasn't around at the time yet

WHY: "The ferry was never slowed down at all, and it was found that the pilot "lost consciousness" due to the use of painkillers. This collision resulted in criminal charges against the pilot and others involved, as well as numerous firings and the hiring of new ferry company workers." Can't they say he was HIGH ON OXY??? Yes folks, more death, brought to you by your wonderful, local drug dealers.

Crazy part was that many people lost body parts from this disaster including one guy who was decapitated and lost his head. Imagine what that was like for everyone who survived and weren't hurt.

I remember this. Our Washington state ferries have done this too.

As someone who worked in Chelsea piers and on boats for a very long time around the Hudson. Most captains drink on the job.

Well why did it happen?

I got on this ferry last night on my way home from work. It's still in service.

I was living in Brooklyn at the time. It was during the ALCS too. I went down for a walk that afternoon after class to listen to sports radio and take my dog out for a walk. I went down to the 69th Street Pier and I remember having no idea what was happening not that far across the water from where I was. I remember one woman had her legs torn off from the impact and she lingered on for several months in an induced coma, but sadly she didn't make it. I've been on that ferry too. It never seems dangerous either. So nice on a hot summer night.

I used this ferry a lot when I was residing in Staten Island and worked in NYC

just brought back some memories .I remember it was out there forgot all about it until I saw the video

Thank god they had a film crew on board so it could all be shown on youtube

At first I suspected the guy running towards the back was the one causing the accident but actually he just knew something bad is gonna happen... hehe

Sad thing is this same ferry helped people during 9/11 and the Hudson Sully plane crash a few years after this crash.

Seemed to have full command of the ship after the collision. I guess this was human error then.

I remembered. This I just got off the ferry earlier that day , wow my grandma was watching over me

Never been on a ferry before but I will keep in mind that if I do ride one to either stay on higher levels or towards the middle of the ship.

Five years back and forth on it. Never a problem.

NYC Ferry is a different entity from the Staten Island Ferry.

This was like, *right* before I was born. My dad told me last night. He didn't live that far from it at the time, either.

From Wikipedia: On March 8, 2005, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) published a report on its investigation into the incident. The NTSB determined the probable cause of the collision was the assistant pilot's unexplained sudden incapacitation, with a contributory cause of the Master's failure to maintain command and control of his vessel.[2] 60 Minutes uncovered that the assistant pilot was short on sleep when he crashed the boat. The assistant pilot tried to commit suicide after the crash and admitted he had passed out on painkillers in the boat's pilothouse. He later pleaded guilty to 11 counts of seaman's manslaughter. The ferry director also pleaded guilty after failing to enforce a rule requiring that ferries be operated by two pilots.[3]

Plot twist of the century. Both crashes occurred on this same vessel yet the DOT still lets it move passengers almost daily in 2020 lol I grew up taking the ferry and know the staff are some of the best people to walk this earth tho

Pilot impairment is the reason the ferry crashed. The pilot crashed the ferry killed 11 people. Injured 70. Let's tell it like it is!

What caused this accident?

The captain under control by himself in the staten island side passed out because he did not report a previous medical condition he had to the ferry company which made him pass out. So the fiery was left drifting towards the maintenance pier.

A mis-representation of company names. When this video was released (2020), another company by the name of NYC Ferry already existed in NY Harbor. The title of this video should accurately say “This Staten Island Ferry Crash was a Complete Shock”

How fast was the boat going? It’s surprising that many people were hurt but I’m guessing the people aboard did not know it was about to crash so they did not brace for impact
