There is always a lot to be found in Old School DnD books. While searching I came across a great sourcebook on a bountiful amount of great advice. So today I unpack the Campaign Sourcebook and Catacomb Guide for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition.

I still struggle a lot with giving my players true agency. I want the story to be good and make sense. But last session I noticed that the tavern visit I had to completely improvise was the most fun part of the evening. So for next session I'm trying to do it as free form as possible ✨

Wow, so much good advice in the video and the old Catacomb Guide! Thanks for sharing. It's so important to remember that we're all just people living in a stressful world. D&D is awesome and fun, but the people at your table are probably your friends and/or family and your relationships with them more important than any specific thing about the game. Such wise advice from way back in 1990!

You crossed my feed, so I took a look. "You should arborate the rules fairly" - that earned you a sub! A wise sage once said "If you can't do it slow, then you can't do it fast." AD&D was my first, back in the late 80's, that Gygaxian-Arnesonian balance exists even to this day. Those old resources are still foundational to the entirety of RPGs in one manner or another. Agree 100% about the ease-in time to a session, but will add that an ease-out time at the end can be nice too. Both being *part* of the session run-time, not just for those who showed up early or stayed late. The best Player Agency games seem to hit on the Arnesonian side, more Character Centric where the PCs are in charge of the narrative direction and face the obstacles in their way, and consequences of their actions. The GM being the facilitator of the gaming experience and the arbitrator of the rules, setting up those reasonable and relevant obstacles. Gas your PCs as they gas each other. This is found in the more "narrative" RPGs, but can be applied to any RPG.

It's good to get insight from older gamers. A GM can be arbirator of the rules amongst other things. I am definitely goign to re-read the full book and unpack more of it for the future!

@@Blerdy_Disposition For sure! Not just the old-school wisdom, but also seeing the evolution as a result of how actual players played the game and pushed the industry to try new things. Considering social media and other global-scale communication: Since 1974, we finally got wider scale internet newsgroups around 1992, and social media began it's rise around 2000 - so one can see how that may have had some impact on the RPG industry. That was even before the live streamers and plethora of RU-vid heads.

Opening Ceremony is something I wanted to implement in-person and got pushback on it from friends so the game never got off the ground. I wanted to cook a "camp dinner" and have us sit around and eat together in-character and simulate us around the campfire to get us immersed. I even had a foraging/hunting mechanic that suggested what goes into the food (likely stew and bread most times) because we were going to do a survival heavy game. I still like the idea and will try in the future, but getting into character and ready to roleplay is important.

Maybe looking for compromise between everyone might be a good idea. Hopefully your game gets off the ground sometime!
